I really enjoy your videos. I'm waiting for a transplant and have a lot of other health problems and have a LOT of time to read. It's my escape from feeling bad and I really like to get your insight into books and your suggestions. It seems like we have pretty similar interests. I love Star Wars. I also read a ton of military history. Thank you so much for the videos. When I'm not reading, I like to hear what you have to say. Take care my friend.

Thank you for watching and subscribing. I just started my channel in September and started out at 0 subs, so I've been slowly growing. I'll definitely have reviews of all of these books up when I read them after they come out.

Where would you recommend starting with the star Wars books
@jonathankoan3 жыл бұрын
I recommend either the Heir to the Empire Trilogy from Legends, or one of the standalone from the Canon, such as Dark Disciple, Master and Appeentice, or A New Dawn.

Great video! Can we get your list in the description section? Thanks! Do you have a list of all your books you have? I would love to see that!
@jonathankoan3 жыл бұрын
Sure I can! I know that some booktubers don’t include their lists in their descriptions because it discourages people from watching the whole video, but I think my channel is small enough that that shouldn’t be a big deal. 😂 I have actually gotten some requests recently for a video like that. The problem with that kind of video is that I have a TON of books(many/most of them off camera ) that it would be a nightmare to film. I’m considering saving that type of video for something special like a milestone or right before I move again soon. I’ll also include my 2022 list(so far) here: 1. Star Wars: The High Republic: The Fallen Star: January 4 2. Gods And Dragons by Kevin J Anderson: January 11 3. Star Wars High Republic: Midnight Horizon by Daniel Jose Older: February 1 4. Queens Hope by EK Johnston: April 5, 2022 5. Star Wars: Brotherhood by Mike Chen: May 10 6. Star Trek Picard: Second Self by Una McCormack: May 17 7. Star Wars: Stories of Jedi and Sith-Anthology: June 7th 8. Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher: June 28 9.The Icarus Plot by Timothy Zahn: July 5 10. Star Wars Padawan by Kiersten White: July 26

Thoughts on Star Trek Picard Season 2 Premiere?
@jonathankoan2 жыл бұрын
So I haven’t watched it yet. I canceled my paramount plus subscription, and have not renewed it yet. Just too many subscriptions to deal with. However, I’ll probably watch it sometime in the summer, once strange new worlds has run its course and I can binge both of them.

@@jonathankoan completely understand you waiting. If it's any help, paromount plus is celebrating their anniversary this week and offering 3 month subscription for a dollar. Just a thought. But i bound binging can lead to better experiences so just a thought

I like Star Wars as a movie but I'm not sure in regards to the books. Seeing that there are several books/spin-offs, I'm actually kind of confused where to start reading :D But I'm kind of interested to the Thrawn novels. Will definitely check out the others. As for Kevin J. Anderson, I knew more of his Sci-Fi works but not his Fantasy ones. Will definitely check on those as well.
@jonathankoan3 жыл бұрын
Kevin Anderson has written quite a lot. If you want Fantasy, I suggest reading his “Wake of the Dragon” series, which is really easy to jump into and not too long. The Thrawn books are excellent places to start, although there are many good starting places. For the new Canon, I suggest “A New Dawn”, “Master and Apprentice” and “Dark Disciple” as excellent starting places. For Legends, I would recommend starting with the OG Thrawn Trilogy, the X-Wing series, and some standalone books like “Kenobi” and “Dark Lord: Rise of Darth Vader”.

The Icarus Plot HAS to be another story in the Icarus Hunt universe right? Zahn wouldn't name a novel "The Icarus (x)" and not have them connected somehow, right? Either way I'm down for a new Zahn novel. They're always a blast. Great video man!

I would think so, but there is nothing in the promotional material indicating it. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Looks like they don’t really know where they should go next with the Star Trek novels. Especially with TNG, now that Picard (and other characters) are in the new show. But what about Star Trek TOS?
@jonathankoan3 жыл бұрын
There will always be TOS books, it’s just a question of when. Star Trek and CBS have a deal to do ST novels at Gallery, so we will have a lot more in the year...they just haven’t been announced way ahead of time like Star Wars has. It’s frustrating, but understandable.

You were wondering about why Simon and Schuster haven't announced any new Star Trek books for 2022 (except for the Picard novel, of course), Jonathan? I believe it has to do with the fact that the company is in the process of being sold by ViacomCBS. Penguin Random House, the 2nd largest book company in the world, was in the process of buying Simon and Schuster. But I believe it was the U.S. Attorney General who stepped in and stopped the sale from happening because the world's largest conglomerate for books. The reason he stopped the sale is because if PRH bought Simon and Schuster, they would go from being the number 2 largest seller of books to number 1. PRH is also based in Germany, not America and that makes a difference too for some reason. There were other reasons listed for stopping the sale too. So now I have no clue as to when new Star Trek books will be coming out. Probably not until late-2022 or early 2023 would be my best guess. Also, you mentioned in your video that you have the first and third Picard novel, Jonathan, but why don't you have the 2nd? The 2nd book is called The Dark Veil by James Swallow. It's a story that's focused on Riker and Troi and their time on the Titan, in case you didn't know. As to books I'm eagerly anticipating next year, my tastes vary. I read a lot of graphic novels. I'm always going though the Marvel Epic Collections list and there are a TON of those coming out between now and next July the listings go up to. I'm really excited for the next Inspector Lynley mystery novel from Elizabeth George. I'm waiting to see what the next Stephen King book is next year. I love John Sandford's Prey series so I keep an eye on that. I keep my eyes open for the next Gabriel Allon spy book from Daniel Silva. So I still have a lot of different stuff to look forward to even without any new Star Trek books. Plus, there's Star Trek comics being published by IDW and there's still a ton of the older Star Trek books for TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY that I don't have that I will use this time next year to keep scooping them up. Live long and prosper, Jonathan 🖖

I knew about the sale to Random House, but figured that wouldn’t have as much of an affect, given that Gallery would probably keep the license anyway. I think the other publishing houses at Random House, particularly the ones that deal with Tie-Ins and Sci-Fi books like Bantam and Del Rey already have their hands full, so I anticipate the books continuing at Gallery. It would be a shame to have to change book designs again after we just changed them in 2018. I’d like to have a large amount with the same design on my shelf before they switch again. 😂 I also would be afraid of them switching editors, as I think Margaret Clark has been fantastic. The reason I only have the 1st and 3rd Picard books is that I happened to find the first one at a used bookstore for 2 dollars, and thus had to get it. (It was definitely worth it). And I always purchase every novel by John Jackson Miller right when it comes out, so that’s why I have the third one. (That’s also why I only have 2 Discovery books, both by John Jackson Miller).I’ll eventually get book two, as Swallow is becoming one of my favorites. I’m still not a fan of Picard or Discovery as a tv series, so at the moment I only buy those books if I really like that author involved.

@@jonathankoan Margaret Clark is great, isn't she? Well, there's no big changes coming right now because the sale was stopped. I'm assuming the sale is the reason for them not announcing new Star Trek novels. I'm not sure but when they had to renew their Star Trek license back in 2019, Simon and Schuster only released a handful of novels that year, The Captain's Oath being one of them. So that's why I'm thinking the sale is the reason for not announcing any new novels. Understandable about you not liking the new shows. I'm a Trekkie through and through and have been since I was 12 and now I'm 42. My first episode of TOS was when I was just 5 years old and I watched it with my Mom. It was The Trouble With Tribbles. I got to see Encounter At Farpoint, TNG's first episode, when it premiered. I had a Geordi Laforge Galoob action figure when he was in his Ensign uniform when I was 8. When I lost my daughter to pneumonia, Star Trek was there to help bring me back from a dark precipice. When I was diagnosed with a terminal genetic neurological condition in 2015 called Huntington's Disease, Star Trek was there to help take my mind away. I'm telling you all this, Jonathan, so you understand when I say I am a Trekkie through and through. I watch everything Trek and read everything Trek. I remember a time when there was no Star Trek on TV at all for 12 years because one man at CBS said that he didn't understand what Star Trek was about. That's what I refer to as the Dark Age in Star Trek. I call it that because you could only read about Star Trek in books instead of being able to watch it on TV. So, because of the Dark Age, I now support it all wholeheartedly. Because I know how easy it is for them to take it away and make sure we never watch it again. I didn't like Discovery in the beginning neither. But Alex Kurtzman said in an interview to let them tell the story that they are trying to tell and then make a decision if you don't like it or not. We live in an era where everything is serialized because of Game Of Thrones. So I always keep that in mind when watching the newer Trek shows. I'm surprised that you don't want to see Prodigy since it has such deep ties to Voyager? I just got a month of Paramount+ for free so I'm gonna be able to check it out now myself. Strange New Worlds looks awesome and it's supposed to be episodic storytelling like the older shows. I am very excited to be able to see the Enterprise, my first love💖, back on the small screen week after week. I sound like Scotty, don't I 😄? Well, maybe eventually something will catch your fancy with the TV shows. There are plenty of them and more coming down the pike (no pun intended) and a new movie too. This is the second Golden Age of Star Trek and it's just getting started. I buy used books too, Jonathan. That's how come I have so many Star Trek books. I buy them at library book sales, Goodwill, Amazon, etc etc. There's no good used bookstores where I live in Connecticut. I wish there were, I'd be hanging out there all day long 😊. Live long and prosper, Jonathan 🖖.
