also, it didn't bomb as they claim...it doubled it's budget...yeah it didn't do so well in the USA but globally speaking it was still a small success. Still had hope for a sequel to finish that cliffhanger ending...

My top five list of 2019 goes: 1. Portrait of a Lady on Fire 2. The Lighthouse 3. The Favourite 4. Joker 5. Parasite Now, "Parasite" is obviously a masterpiece: The cinematography is panoramic, perceptive, precise; the dialogs are believable, engulfing, to the point. The tone of narration is sharpsighted, subtle, sometimes sardonic, there is dark humour luring between the hyperrealistic staging of events. It is almost traditionally theatrical, wide shots and meticulous blocking and distinct dialog and all that, plus a luxurious set design and perfect camera angles. Very calm and yet hyperbolic, like a parable on life. "Joker" on the other hand does not feel like a stage play at all, it is very immersive, engulfing, melodramatic, cinematic in the use of expressive angles, cuts, closeups, lush set design and a myriad of props. It is very much in the tradition of Hollywood cinema, some say derivative in style, but then again it does make good use of a variety of semantically connected, narratively intermeshing motifs (almost a snowball turning into an avalanche) referencing ballet, juggling, slapstick, different types of clowns and comedy, all forms and sorts of drama: psychological drama, lonely improvisation, confined relationship roles, hired private engagements, free intimate stand-up routines, the world-as-stage, scripted broadcasts, movie theatres and tv studios, Gotham as a theatre of civil war, the drama of Joker turning from a pagliacco into a harlequin and shooting the brighella, the media circus from newspapers to network shows, questions of authenticity, social roles, fake characters and personas, public avatars and icons, makeup and masks. Very dynamic and symbolically layered. Also it translates a larger-than-life comic book opulence very well onto the screen. All this makes it so much more than the copycat effort some snobby critics tried to reduce it to. That's why I don't mind it standing on the shoulders of giants at all. Plus, it emotionally gripped me from beginning to end. What a (themepark) ride! Which leaves my top three... All three have a very distinct and original feel / style to them and carry certain moods perfectly: "The Favourite" has very daring cinematography that sticks out a lot, changes noticeably between shots but serves perfectly to support the tone and transport the atmosphere of each scene. The dialogues are witty, the cutting is brilliant, the pacing like a symphony. Very entertaining and fresh. The ever changing perspectives of "The Favourite" really mark the psychological and sociological distinctions between rural and more courteous environments, between naivety, intrigue and rancour, the powerplay unravelling, the stifling protocol and inherent violence of courtly manners and politics, and also the theatrical, playful decadence in between. The constantly shifting cinematography here plays out like a baroque piece of music. Especially the first two on my list are GREAT in EVERY ASPECT imaginable. Including the cinematography, sheer beauty there, and always telling something about the characters, dynamics and themes of the story. The costumes, dialogues, lighting and sound design are also fantastic in both "Portrait ..." and "The Lighthouse". To top it all off, both are TRULY ORIGINAL. Of my top 3 movies of 2019, "The Lighthouse" might be the most consistent, almost rigid, in its cinematography - which enhances the sentiments of isolation, closed up masculinity and delusion expressed in the story. Also, almost every still would serve well as a poster shot. Rarely have I seen such dense atmosphere and layered symbolism, such a compact way of storytelling, such oberwhelming and raw acting, such moody lighting and sound, all combined in one film. "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" just paints each scene and shot perfectly in colour and lighting, and the cinematography makes you follow every gaze between the protagonists and feel really close to the perception of an artist; very precise yet also very sensous, sharp and daring but also calm and empathetic. A slow burn that goes deep. A brilliant panorama of the living conditions and zeitgeist portrayed, and at the same time a subtle character study, it takes in so much so perceptively and turns everything into sublime art. Visually stunning on every level, never too overwhelming but opening up new angles and perspectives to experience the world, like true art should.

I think categories should be, for the most part, chosen to describe the substance and not the form of the film. I can understand that in some occasions describing a formal aspect may be more informative for audiences, e.g. “Animation”. However I think “Foreign” is not one of those instances. I do not find this term particularly useful when I introspect to choose a film to watch.
@sws212
@sws212 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you see the foreign category. A lot of things are lost from a film due to culture, history, and mostly importantly, translation of dialogue. A foreign category isn't useful if you lump everything into it but it does mark a concern that you may not get some of the nuances involved in viewing it purely at a surface level.

My top 10 movies of 2019 1.) Parasite 2.) Marriage Story 3.) The Irishman (I don’t care if it’s 3 hours long, it’s actually great) 4.) Uncut Gems (People found it too stressful, that’s the point, this movie is amazing) 5.) The Farewell ( 6.) Knives Out (Subverting expectations of murder mystery film tropes done well and in an entertaining way) 7.) 1917 (Many say it’s only talked about for the “one take” gimmick, however I’d say it’s just a great war movie period) 8.) The Lighthouse (One of the most creative and daring movies of the year, of course some found it too weird) 9.) OUATIH (Some call it overrated, boring, and slow, but I consider it to be one of Tarantino’s better films and arguably his most mature film to date) 10.) Apollo 11 (The only documentary in my top 10; if you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor and please watch it) Honorable mentions: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Avengers Endgame, Booksmart, Dolemite is My Name, Ford v Ferrari, Honeyland, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Luce, Toy Story 4, Waves

@elfsieben1450
@elfsieben1450 3 жыл бұрын
It's like a very entertaining exposition, like an elaborate pilot to a mini-series, but as a standalone narrative it leads nowhere, its characters are established but not yet fully rounded, its themes are not explored deeply, its plot ends on a cliffhanger and does not feel like a morally ambivalent open ending of artistic choice but rather as crafted for the sole purpose of starting a franchise. Therefore, "Alita Battle Angel" fails to stand up on its own.

While it was craftily narrated, effectively paced and looked authentic, I did not care too much for "The Irishman", maybe also because I felt I had seen this type of movie too often before, and stylistically and thematically it had not nearly enough new things to offer for such a long movie. I did enjoy "Ford vs Ferrari" more, at the cinema it felt very much like you were right there with its characters and it was a fun movie to watch and feel, so it made for a good blockbuster experience, but at the end of the day it was still somewhat generic. I really enjoyed "Marriage Story" out of the video's top 10 picks, and I believe it will stand the test of time, for the acting is superb, the story is and its themes are timeless, the characters are so believable in their good intentions but human flaws that it really hurts, and the narration does both pro-/ant-tagonists justice when it comes to character development, perspective and screentime. Personally, I enjoyed "Parasite", "Joker", "The Favourite", "The Lighthouse", "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" at least the same and the latter four even more, but I did watch those at the movie theatre on a big screen, and "The Irishman" & "Marriage Story" only via Netflix on a laptop screen.

Apocalypse Now: Final Cut was my favorite film of 2019.

I think it had too much unnecessary content and I like the original cut better. The colonialism aspect was done well but I don’t think it really flowed with the rest of the film. I can see the appeal however.

I've only seen this and the director's cut. Director's cut was 3 hours and 20 minutes, I think.

What's the difference between that and redux? Cause redux had way too much extra content in it

Duckpool Turner Final cut has 20 minutes of the Redux removed. But I still like the original cut the best.
