Cross generation evolution is one of my favorite things in Pokemon. Giving something a buff to the Pokemon always makes me very excited.
@munchrai6396
@munchrai6396 Ай бұрын
I think the best part of cross gen evolutions is seeing the strengths of the existing Pokemon rise up to a new standard. Up until gen 9 Pokemon rarely lose things from their toolbox, so an evolution added on to a Pokemon is just a further progression of what the Pokemon has always been going for. That's always been my biggest problem with some of the regional evolutions because they don't get required access to all the strengths of the original and instead attempt to carve their own path often leaving the original in the dust. Just look at Corsola, a pokemon with incredible abilities and decent stats held back by horrid typing. Instead of pushing Corsola's Regenerator supported bulk even further, they went with a pure ghost gimmick that puts everything into its special stats.

Cross gen evos are better than megas imo. A mega is a temporary buff. A cross gen evo is forever. Poor Mawile and Sabelye…
@munchrai6396
@munchrai6396 Ай бұрын
@@austinb2177 The impermanence of Mega evolution is definitely its biggest downside, but there are a lot of examples where the benefits that it does bring stand out over standard evolution. The 2 big things that Megas can do is push a Pokemon's stats above a third evolution stage and add a uniquely deep layer of synergy thanks to Megas enabling mid battle type/ability changes. Mega Venasaur and Aggron are probably the best examples because both have really strong standard abilities in Chlorophyl and Rock Head, but when not in sun or facing one of their weaknesses, they can Mega evolve to increase their versatility. Something that, outside of Megas, we've only ever seen a handful of times from Pokemon like Meloetta or Ultra Necrozma. A standard evolution of Mawile or Sableye would probably not have pushed either of them to the meta dominant forces they were in gens 6 and 7. Additionally, Sableye being able to shift from Prankster to Magic Bounce is incredibly strong and makes it one of the best status spreaders in the game.

Weavile had a rather amusing Gen 9. It started off as a low-tier meme, not just because of Chien-Pao outclassing it, but because Weavile lost the two moves that made it so great in Gen 8: Knock Off and Triple Axel. That is, until The Teal Mask DLC re-added these moves as TMs and Weavile immediately became a terror again, especially with Chien-Pao banned. Just like with Gen 4 letting Weavile down with underwhelming STABs, its Gen 9 performance shows just how move-dependant Weavile really is.

Me but with Scrafty and Magcargo They can possibly get a Mega in Legenda ZA but I lean more towards evolution because: 1) Megas don’t last forever and more importantly 2) We could really use more 3-stage fighting-types *lines* Annihilape being added was only our third one after just Machamp and Conkeldurr lines for so long, whereas everything else is not initially /Fighting until they evolve once or twice. Same deal with Fire that AREN’T starters as you only have Magmar line (which took 4 gens to happen), Chandelure line, and if you wanna grasp straws Talonflame and to a lesser extent Coalossal. EDIT: For comparison, Grass has 10 to pick from the likes of Vileplume and Victreebel to Arboliva and Hydrapple. Whiling Water doesn’t have so few as it has 5 (and a half with Azumarill), you would think it would have more for a type of its size in quantity. Fire literally only has 2-3, and not only that they scrapped a Vulpix pre-evo (twice) but also not 1 but 2 Turtonator pre-evos, thanks to the Spaceworld Demo and recent Teraleak that we get to learn about this. EDIT 2: Ghost and Dark were lacking in that department too (Gengar was the only one in the first 3 gens and Dark literally had none until Gen 5) but they both now have a respectable quantity of 5 each (complete with both a pseudo line on top with Dragapult and Hydreigon respectively), and for how rare and relatively recent Fairy is they have plenty, ranging from Clefable to Gardevoir to Grimmsnarl and Tinkaton. Meanwhile the likes of Fire (again beyond starters), Fighting, and Ice still have less than 5 lines. Dragon and Fairy both have more than this.

I think the next theorem vid should be on "Why Versatility Isn't Everything" and how even if a Pokémon only runs one or two sets and only fits a specific role most of the time, so long as it's one of the best or the best at that role then it'll see success. Could possibly be something like The Pelipper Theorem since even if the only role Pelipper fills that most other Pokémon with it's movepool can't, like being a Defogger or defensive pivot, since it's the best rain setter it doesn't matter if you don't really use it outside of that context since it's proficiency in its role as a rain setter is reason enough to use it. It also only runs one set or so with Defog/Roost/U-Turn and then usually either Hurricane/Ice Beam or Water STAB.
@munchrai6396
@munchrai6396 Ай бұрын
Versatility definitely makes a Pokemon more interesting and there's a lot of role overlap in Pokemon, so being the best at only a single common role is usually not super notable. Primeape getting a useable evolution is really impressive if you think about it. Most bad Pokemon have bad later gen evolutions, most good Pokemon get good later gen evolutions. Primeape has never been good in any tier so getting an Uber tier evolution is scary as hell not to mention just by getting Rage Fist Primeape was able to find lower tier use.

And mediocre STAB and no offensive ability to support its mostly weak movepool EDIT: and no reliable set-up for the longest until now with Bulk Up No Sheer Force, no Tough Claws (which makes sense), not even Iron Fist. That last one is the first one of its kind and it really shows, with it being 1.2x as opposed to 1.3x (Tough Claws and Sheer Force) if not 1.5x (everything else) Also, Eelektross got Close Combat before Electivire ever gets Close Combat, can we talk about that?
@davidhyatoola3127
@davidhyatoola3127 Ай бұрын
Electivire should've always had Bulk Up(probably would still be out of place in Gen 4 OU but is kinda worthwhile). Iron Fist should've been its Hidden Ability instead of Vital Spirit(Volt Absorb or Sheer Force also works but would need better Ice coverage, perhaps Icicle Crash even if it is a bit of a stretch). Close Combat for improved Fighting coverage, Grass Knot for improved Special coverage targetting Grounds, Triple Axel might be pushing it but a 120BP complimentary coverage move would be sicc. SuperCell Slam should've been like a more accurate Mega Kick NOT Jump Kick.

A thing that should be mentioned is that regular Ursaluna was great, but Bloodmoon has a distinct and massive advantage. This is the fact that Bloodmoon didn’t need to take constant burn damage. A common way to beat regular Ursaluna is to stall a few turn with chip damage. Hazards + Burn eventually wittled Ursaluna down to where you could KO it with a faster Pokemon. Bloodmoon however is much harder to KO because it doesn’t require you to burn yourself.

Totally agree, the longer the wait, the more elation I feel when an older Pokemon I have can finally evolve into something new. As long as the original Pokemon actually gets access to the new form and its not locked behind a regional variant that doesn't get all its moves or abilities like Obstagoon and Cursola. Really ruins the flow of progression when the new evolution forces a new playstyle by forgoing what was established before.

The "Nearly" part is important as there are plenty of Pokemon that still prevail even in spite of a specific nerf. Rillaboom is a great example. Grassy Glide going from 70 to 55 base power between Gens 8 and 9 is definitely a nerf that directly affects Rillaboom worse than any other Pokemon (because pretty much no other Pokemon run Grassy Glide except for Rillaboom) but it doesn't change the fact that it's still a powerful threat in both OU and VGC, in spite of this.
