Thank you for giving Archie his due. Archie and his son Billy had a gym for wayward boys called Any Boy Can. I spent a decent amount of my childhood with both of them and even went to Archie’s house a couple times in the 80s. I didn’t know what a big deal Archie was but understood he was somebody significant due to the respect his family and friends gave him. Archie - and Billy - were incredibly kind caring respectful funny and fatherly role models a kid like me needed bad - and they helped out hundreds if not thousands of us over the years. Stand out memories for me is Archie’s green boxing glove shaped swimming pool and Archie introducing me to Muhammad Ali. Ali had an actual aura around him and clearly loved Archie. As a little blonde white kid Archie and Billy and their whole crew made me feel like I was part of the team, and family. Archie’s my favorite boxer, favorite human beings one of the finest Americans of all time.

Carmen " The upstate onion farmer " Basilio. Great fighter no doubt but they could have done better with the nickname. Just not as catchy as " Sugar " or " Smokin " or " Iron " or " Brown Bomber " Jack Dempsey was before Carmens time and he had " Manassa Mauler " which sounds like a fighter. But then again there has got to be only one " The upstate onion farmer " so at least it's absolutely original.
