On 18 October 1977, the GSG 9 brilliantly solve the hijacking of a plane in Mogadishu (capital of Somalia). In 1981, the GIGN and works as some members of the Delta Force. The GIGN has also participated in the training group intervention Austrian "Cobra" and the Belgian unit (ESI Special Intervention Squadron).

Man I agree with you.. Many people really underestimate the capacity of BOPE, but they are as hell much more than just professional killers.. And plus, from the stories I hear (I met people, who were in BOPE), they tell me, that they are trained for all situations with insane and unhuman mehtods.. And its true, that their dependibility on conducting operations lies almost everytime on the decision of the governor.. which is their unfortunate and one big problem in Brasil and in Rio..

Dude first of all there are videos on youtube of Yamam and GSG9 training together. They train together a lot.....Second of all most of YAMAM members are all former Israeli commando soldiers from units like Sayerat Matkal, Sayerat Shaldag, and Shayetet 13.... that is why they are the best....YAMAM officers have insane training....I am not saying that others are bad but YAMAM is the best... but to each his own....

30 April to 5 May 1980. A group of six armed men took the Iranian embassy in London. Originally the building was going to be relieved by SO19 (previous CO19) however last minute the SAS were tasked with the job.

In some countries, like Burundi, they're there to do the exact opposite. They're there to fight you, even if your an innocent, they're there to hurt you. But in America, there a sign of relief. They're there to protect you, and save you.

A French plane(Air France Flight 8969) and an Indian plane(Indian airlines flight 427) was hijacked in 1994 and 1993. GIGN was tasked to rescue the French plane with 4 hijackers NSG was tasked to rescue the Indian plane with 3 hijackers. Both used completed different techniques. GIGN did the job in 22 mins, with quite a few injuries to themselves and the passengers. NSG did it in 12 seconds with no scratches on any passenger or on themselves. So, not quite the same level.

I dunno if it's already been said before but the GIGN is not a police unit, they are part of the gendarmerie who are militaries despite doing police services. The actual SWAT unit would be either GIPN (local scale) or RAID (national scale).

I don't know how you base the ranking, but Yamam is the most experienced special unit as we living daily conflict with our neighbors which makes them much more train and ready to act. Don't know about what unit is better equipped.

America has only one national counter-terrorism unit which is FBI HRT (not SWAT). HRT is basically considered the law enforcement squadron of DEVGRU "SEAL Team Six".
