Ahh you youngsters! I am of the age that I was around for the quartz revolution. You have to remember, watches back then we’re first and foremost tools with which to tell the time, secondary was brand or looks. Everyone needed a watch. So, imagine that scenario where you have a mechanical watch that perhaps on average kept time to around 30-60 seconds a day and every few years you had to spend money to have it serviced and when that was happening you were without a watch as most owned just one watch. So, along comes quartz, all that was needed was to change the battery every year or so which was quick and cheap and adjust it twice a year for daylight savings as it was so accurate. This was a premium purchase back then, it was cutting edge and showed that you were living in the future, not the past! Man, who wants an inaccurate, prone to shocks mechanical when you can have this amazing technology that meant you never needed to adjust, wind or service your watch! I remember the day I got my first quartz, it felt like I had stepped out of the dark ages! Oh and those were the days when people swam with 30m water resistance ratings!

So, if the watch is from a legit manufacturer, and the 30 meters is legit, you can absolutely swim with it. Dive with it even. 30 meters is about 100 feet, which is the limit for most recreational divers. It's fine!

I recently added an Orient Blue Ray 11 which I really enjoy, yet it runs around 90 seconds/fast/day, which is very frustrating. I just purchased a Seiko Presage Cocktail Time with the Power Reserver Complication. It’s an attractive watch and keeps fantastic time, running only 15 seconds/fast/day. Anyway, on my reduced speedy I've found in watch service manual(Omega caliber 1140) a notice about that: To set the minute hand, turn the crown forwards or backward. To synchronize the minute hand with the small seconds hand, the minute hand should be advanced about 30 to 45 seconds from the desired marker. (This procedure is normal to the design of this caliber). The energy transmission from the movement to the hands goes through three wheels. The play between the theeth of these three wheels must be compensated when setting the time by positioning the minute hand 30 to 45 seconds fast. And I should say that is a pretty hard to align it perfectly. So I'm wondering how many calibers got this behaviour...

I'd say the Seiko 6M13 movement (known as "the dancing hands") deserves an honorable mention, it's just such a lark with 4 motors, 3 for the hands, one for the date. The hands are in a sense purely digital, each hand is driven separately and they advance in small "clicks": the second hand once per second (duh), the minute hand advances 1/6 of one minute every 10 seconds, the hour hand advances 1/6 of one minute division every 2 minutes. This gives the perfect illusion of a continuous movement but the hands never go out of sync, so e.g. the second hand always crosses "12" _exactly_ when the minute hand crosses a minute mark. The only dial which does go out of sync with passing years a bit does so because it's geared, not connected directly to a motor: the 24-hour subdial which is necessary for the perpetual calendar operation (the thing knew that the year 2000 was not a leap year too). There are videos of this watch on KZbin but ALL of them show the incorrectly aligned hands (nobody RTFM as usual).

My first really nice watch was a Seiko Quartz. I got it at Seiko outlet in Wisconsin in 2005.a really nice Perpetual calendar with 100m water resistance...

Very cool vid. Curious about the Citizen Skyhawk. Why did you choose this over the Blue Angel version? For an extra $100, the sapphire crystal in the Blue Angel is a no brainer.

Congrats on your videos; they are always fun and informative. In my honest opinion, one of the best quartz watches is the Marathon Large Diver's Quartz (TSAR) with reliable High-torque quartz • three jewels • Swiss Movement ETA FØ6 SWISS MOVEMENT is the perfect everyday watch. Strong, extremely precise, durable, and comfortable

I wore a very nice Seiko perpetual calendar for 17 years. Still one of my favorites.....

Hey T3 or anyone who wishes to comment. If "real" watch collectors look down on quartz, how do they feel about atomic/radio watches? This technology seems to further perfect the accuracy of quartz?

Please give me the link to the video you talked about the new seiko astron. Thank you.

SBGX045 is the best quartz watch of all time. Grade 5 hardened titanium, looks amazing, light as a feather, hard as nails, can wear with black tie and gains just a few seconds per year.

Hello Jory, I hope you are fine and in the best of health. I am from the Philippines and always watch your videos and have learned a lot from you. I have one very unique quartz watch here that I want to seek advice, insights, and comments from you. I have a mint Omega Speedmaster Professional LCD Quartz watch with Ref Number ST 186.0004 from 1977?. What can you say about this particular model? Pros and cons? Thank you and stay safe Sir.

I love my Casio Pathfinder 1300T...titanium, solar, atomic, compass, altimeter. It’s the watch that goes on my wrist when I’m out camping & hiking.

You totally not a Citizen or Tag fan? Curious. Aquaracer and Formula 1 quartz look pretty cool. Aquaracer looks great but kinda biting off the Explorer ll it would appear.🤷♂️

I really think the Seiko 7A28-703B “Speedmaster” deserves to be in this list. Because it was the first analog quartz chronograph watch. And its a very cool looking watch. Looks a lot like the Omega Speedmaster.

Not only was it the first analog quartz chronograph, but it's all metal, reparable,15 jewel movement set a standard which is unequaled

I still have my Rolex Oyster Quartz and loving it. A great watch that has held up very well over the years. In terms of newer watches, I am particularly fond of the Bulova Precisionist line.

TT nothing wrong with a quartz watch, like many others I love watching the mechanics of an open case back with a vast majority of my collection being automatics. Since becoming fully addicted over the past year to the small MB market I have purchased many quartz watches that I love. This video brought back some nostalgia from 20+ years ago when I bought my first brand name watch that kicked off my watch collecting addiction the Tag Heuer Kirium (Quartz) & the one thing I remember was that I had this watch that I could wear in the shower & swim with at the beach. Before that I was wearing Seiko's, Citizens & even had a Casio Calculator watch (several from memory). Another excellent video, keep up the good work.

Totally refreshing cheers.I love decent quartz pieces over autos any day. I suspect the very high majority of watches sold globally are quartz and that speaks for itself. Seiko started it because even they knew there must have been a better way of building a watch? And they proved it! Cracking video, Len.UK

I wear a hand carved sundial on my wrist. It keeps great time but it's difficult to read at night. The stone that it was carved from contains quartz. Therefore it is both a quartz and mechanical movement.

Talk about Quartz watches but No mention of Bulova? No astron? No curv? No precisionest? Well its a shame

Great video. Love the tuna. I'll just add the Citizen caliber 0100 - the most accurate autonomous watch in the world and the Seiko 7a28 - the first quartz analogue chronograph in the world. 🤙🏻

I’m an avid golfer and actually wear a watch when playing so I like having a quartz. A little concerned about bogeying up an automatic when golfing. So I rarely wear an auto when playing a round. Also enjoy being able to “grab and go” with any of my quartz watches. Naturally automatics are wonderful but for me there are a ton of benefits to the quartz watches in my collection.
@brianglendenning1632 Жыл бұрын
I have had automatics, and have had and have solar quartz. I ride a bmw s1000r motorbike, and had vibration shake apart Seiko bracelets (yet I do not feel the vibration). Doubt an automatic would sustain the vibes.

Loved your top ten list. Should be a top 100 list. Could we have a top 10 list poll and the highest most listed watches could be disclosed this Saturday during the Q&A or whenever???? I would be curious as to what would tank high in the Quartz arena!
