Occasionally in Warcraft when a player slows down and decides to read the quest text they will discover some of the most heartbreaking lines of text in the game. In this list we’re going to be going over some of the saddest quests in the game that surely pull on someone’s heartstrings. This is also a ‘part two,’ so there will be no repeat entries here.

Saddest by far is the Runas the Shamed quest chain in Legion. I always sit in the pool with him for several minutes even though he can’t see me anymore. Dargrul and the Hammer in Legion. I was maining an enhancement shaman at the beginning of Legion. It caught me by surprise when Dargrul used the power of the hammer to impale Warbrave Oro. I went oom futilely trying to heal him my garbage enh heals, but I knew where the story was headed. We built a relationship with these characters in their questlines, then they’re taken away tragically. Runas’s last words were haunting. Oh and not a quest, but RP. The RP scene with Varok Saurfang collecting the body of his son Dranosh after we just killed him at the top of ICC.

I agree that the RP scene with Varok in ICC is heart-wrenching. But I'd argue the Alliance version of that scene is also heart-wrenching, considering that Varian stepped in and told Muradin to let Varok pass, and even praised Dranosh. Considering this was back when Varian had a massive hatred for the Horde, the fact that he praised Dranosh was very impactful.

Maybe not sad so much, but I really like the quest Until Death Do Us Part from vanilla. All you do is talk to an undead woman in Thunder Bluff who gives you an amulet, says it was her husband's, wants nothing to do with it, and wants you to get rid of it. So you take it to his grave in The Sepulcher, and the quest text upon completion is just bleak, and really makes you think about things. There's no follow-up quest, no little cutscene of his spirit talking after. Just, you've returned this amulet to a forgotten soldier's grave, because his wife doesn't want to think about him ever again.

That reminds me about the old Darkshore quest where there is an Elf at the end of the Pier who asks you to find his wife's amulet in some nearby ruins. When you complete the quest, her ghost appears and he gets a few moments with her, but then she disappears and he's left alone for good this time. Felt pretty bad doing that one back in the day, especially since my main is a Dwarf Pally and I had no idea what to expect from the Kalimdor quests...

There was a quest in MoP witch a tauren paladin asks the player for help getting herbs for his sick wife who ends up dieing anyway. Then I learned after that one of their kids dies too. Last time I read quest text

For me the saddest one was the one in northrend for the brother of a dev who died. You search the world looking for a cure so he can't be risen as undead. It was depressing while doing it, but finding out that the dev's family went all over the world looking for cancer treatments for the brother, it took on a whole other dimension.

in Ice Crown there is a quest line you do where you try to prevent a soldier from dying but to no avail.

I still think about this one quest from Warlords, in Frostfire. You're helping an orc and her wolf companion, Asha, dies in battle. Asha later comes back as a ghost to help you. I ended up taming a wolf and naming it after her in remembrance. Such a loyal dog deserved to live on! 😭

As much as the Alliance says they let the civilians of Camp Taurajo escape so they're not all bad, this was just a mistake, they neglect the part where the only escape route they gave the civilians was straight into Quillboar territory. I guess it's seen different in the Alliance when you orchestrate deaths and worse while keeping your blade clean.

While doing the “Stay A While” quest when he mentioned that his friend was a female black dragon, I remember thinking how much of a twist it would’ve been if said black dragon turned out to Onyxia(though this was before he mentioned that he killed her).

The quest in wotlk that had you summon a naru to escort a soldier to “the light”. It was made and named for a dev who had died during wotlk development. I’m not sure if it’s still available now but it was an amazing quest. Also the one where Tirion Fordring ventures to reunite with his son Dalan Fordring and free him from the Scarlet Crusade.

The Pamela's Doll questline from the Eastern Plaguelands also gets my vote. I still remember my cousin telling me about it in Vanilla and rushing to go do it. Heartbreaking.

If you are Horde in MoP you encounter Sunwalker Dezco and his wife in the Krasarang Wilds storyline. I know it's a storyline/questchain and not a single quest but it's so good! No spoilers of course but damn did it tug at the heart strings

There's another side quest in Dragonflight near the Ruby Life Pools where an elderly Dragonmaw Orc spends times watching the red whelplings while talking about the things his kind have done. It's also a really sad quest.

The ravenbear questline in legion got me kinda sad and according to wowhead, a lot of other people felt the same. JUSTICE FOR THE RAVENBEARS!

Not even mentioning the Blue Dragonflight quests in Azure Span is a crime. There was no other point in wow where i teared up more than once, but this questline did it. I started it on a "just want my tarec mount" mindset, and was so suprised when it turned to one of the most well-written, mature, character and love filled and SAD quests i did. They do such a good job in protraying grief about the passing, while honoring those who did (lessons Kalec learned early on in the Span's campaign). We get to see how traumatic the lives and deaths of these dragons were, while finding new, younger dragons to make a new family of. It all culminates with Senegos (that's been with us since legion and alllll throughout this quest chain) giving us his goodbies and joining the dead (and if you have Tarecgosa's Rest, theres another bit where you release her from the staff, which is also quite sad, but healthy and happy at the same time)

Every Rose has its Thorne is an Alliance quest where the garrison architect is killed by invaders after ge finally asks out Kt Thorne. The rise that the character gets fir him to give her stays upon her desk, with her in Worgen form .

Trying to save the night elves in Darnassus was by far the saddest I’ve ever felt doing a wow quest. They give you a quest to save 1000 night elves with the quest timer. After rescuing 30, I realized I would not even be able to save 100 in time. The realization hit me of how many night elves would be dying and I was helpless to do anything.

OPie is a radial action-binding addon: it lets you group actions into rings which appear when you hold down a keyboard or mouse binding. When you release the binding, OPie will perform an action based on where your mouse cursor is. Copied from Curse forge.

Personally i dont see either of this as sad, especially the n1, cause its not the quest is sad, its a story around it. But despite neither of those made me feel sad itself, im still commend you on giving me this approach. Never looked at this quests this way, but i probably can now. Its sad blizz dont make more of those this days, or continue the story as with Mankrik. Today most of tragic characters get happy ending, even if its not instant, and takes a quest chain or a content patch. For me probably the only really sad quest was the Krom'gar one. You just wanted to help your guys, but end up completely helpless, just to watch as a whole little town gets decimated by a literal nuke, and your friend's and just geniune good person's townsfolk and family killed. Only to then get yelled by a Garrosh, barely escaping being executed on the spot and stripped of all of your accomplishments and rank. For us players its just a 2-3 hours in a location, but if we were a normal character this would be a story worth 10-20 years. Imagine climbing the ladder, getting achievements, making friends, only for all of your life to be stripped from you in a flash, and somehow you arent even a victim but a person being charged for this. Yeah, its more rage-inducing at the moment, but when rage goes out, its one of the saddest quests in the wow story to this date.

Unpopular opinion, but, number one on this list doesn't really fit, imo. His quest is not really the sad thing about him, but his character's backstory is. His quest is literally just getting food to "catch" the dog that runs around in circles around the village, but his character is the one with the sad background. So in my opinion, he doesn't really fit a list where it is the quests that are the sad part of them. Still awesome to see his wish fulfilled and him immortalized in the game with multiple references.

I think the cruelest quest chain is the one in Vanilla where a warlock sacrifices the hearts of two innocent men and summon/bind a succubus. It really shows you how evil warlocks really are, just downright chaotic and self-serving. The world building in that class quest and others is why vanilla WoW was so good, with Legion bringing a lot of that back into the game for it's duration.

really sad that Runas the Shamed was not included in this. You spend the entire time with this funny nightbourne addict and he helps you on your quest. Only for him to inevitably succumb to his degeneration because of that absence of the nightwell, but not before thanking you for being there with him at the end. That quest caught me off guard and honestly made me tear up a little.
