The way fannypacks managed the “sling bag” rebranding is impressive. I use one for the beach when I just wanna take some sunscreen, my phone, etc. But at the end of the day I know in my heart it’s a fannypack 😂

The Aer City Sling is best option IMO. Not too large, strap can be tucked in, has handles to carry. Which there was a 2l option and/or a zippered/magnetic pocket on the backside.

Arc’teryx Mantis 2 is my go to. I like how the straps actually turn at the connectors instead of sticking straight out of the bag in a single direction. This makes it waaaay more comfortable. I also like how an iPad Mini can also fit inside with ease.

Interesting as always. Everything up-to-date and surely a great fashion statement, too. My collection can't compete with such stuff. A simple Eastpak Doggy Bag 3L does it mostly for me. And I use almost every day a Forclaz 8619465 Multipocket Pipe Bag from Decathlon, which works fine as a crossbody bag. For motorcycle rides where I need more capacity I use every once in a while one of these crazy looking no-name tactical military waist bags instead of a rucksack ... carries water, camera, tripod etc. like nothing ;-) I've got the Eastpak for around 20€, the Decathlon piece for around 8€ and that tactical whatever thing for around 12€. All well spent money, so far.

I wear a $7 Walmart brand Fanny pack and I love it. My only downside with it is that my battery bank could be smaller/more compact. Other than that it holds everything. Although I wouldn’t buy the Away Crossbody because of those loops/hooks for the strap. They look too fragile.

Let’s face it: They are basically purses. There, I said it. I don’t care what label you slap on them. Whether you are a guy, gal or anything else - a good idea remains a good idea. And I am here for it. Still, it takes some getting used to having grown up during the late 80s and 90s when the „fanny pack“ was all the rage.

In setting out to find a better bag to carry my junk in with enough volume to take my camera I had to get several in to try. Not even Pack Hacker's longer term report could do more than narrow my short list down. It is the things than no one mentioned, or I missed in reviews, that I found more of a deal breaker to use than I initially though. One has a portrait carry tall and thin but has a long zip on the side. It meant that stuff I want to stay in place dropped elsewhere when carried. Another I found the perfect carry but the strap which made for comfort when over the shoulder became annoying when not worn, moving in and out of a car, finding a spot near where I was working and the heavy strap wanting to go elsewhere, etc. The one that seemed to have more initial problems has turned out to be not bad at all not having the faults of the other two and its niggles still there but not as bad as the others turned out to have. As always your mileage may differ. Unfortunately it means I have slings now to pass on.

@@PackHacker For me it's the PERFECT bag and I am VERY picky. I made a few modifications but it fits everything that I need to carry, is flexible and hugs the body if it's worn as a sling or waist bag. There is plenty of room for extras like a small water bottle, a small book, snacks etc. I have tried all of the AER Day sling bags and City Sling bags and the first Day sling is still my favorite. I sewed the pockets up the middle so that my phone can fit in vertically on one side and my wallet fits in the other side. Then I removed the plastic buckle and put kevlar webbing on the straps for security and then used metal loop fasteners. It makes it more difficult to use as a waist pack but is perfect for a sling. I own several so I play with them.

My everyday carry is the Aer City Sling 2, and while I love the design of it I REALLY regret getting it in X-Pac. I've had it for...almost 2 years (? or slightly less, ordered it the day it was released) and it has not 'broken in' at all. It's incredibly rigid feeling and I guess it's on me for thinking that water-resistance would be more of a concern than the feel of the bag. :-/ I originally got it after months of bag-searching, wanting something that would work for both sling/hip-pack wearability, at home daily use and to be my "small personal item" to keep on me while on planes. It just...didn't work out. What I want accessible while being stuffed in a seat in flight just didn't fit the Aer City Sling 2. Totally bummed since it was so expensive (to me). In comes the DadsFanny bag. Ridic name but man oh man, it did exactly what I needed it to do for my travel needs (and much cheaper!). I love the expandable water bottle pouch on the bottom of the bag, that's a game changer for theme park use. They've been out of stock of traditional colors, so I wound up with something a little more funky looking than I wanted...so I will be keeping an eye out for when they start re-stocking in solid colors (or just something more 'me') to grab a 2nd bag. For now, the funky color will stay stored with my travel gear, ready to do what it needs to. But I will ultimately be replacing my much more...chic Aer City Sling 2 with this little DadsFanny. Maybe that'd change if I could get my hands on some of the newer styles from Aer in a brick&mortar or something, but I just really don't want to buy any more expensive gear without physically feeling it and experiencing how it sits on my body.

I have been searching for a perfect sling bag for me, and I think I found it. Its the Tumi Platoon Sling. Its definitely not cheap, but I needed quick access to a water bottle, and I can't get any better than this bag. it also has a separate (outside the bag) phone slide in pocket. I have a wrist strap attached to my iPhone 14 Pro Max, so its easy to pull my phone out when needed. the bottle pocket does take up space from the inside when used, so you do have options whether you use a reusable or a disposable. But if you don't carry much like me, it wouldn't matter.

There is a point when what you pack is more about weight than size. I managed to put 6kg into a sling and then realised this was a terrible carry and used a back pack - two straps and a waist strap if I wanted. Even carrying an 8" tablet, phone, earbuds, wallet etc with cables and charger was close to being too much for a sling.

You can fit an 11' iPad pro in an alpaka bravo X sling (6 litre ) this is one of my favourites (xpac vx50 in black) for many reasons from comfort, buckle placement, the materials and pocket layout. Love it. Alpaka bravo sling max would easily carry the iPad and has a very thick padded strap (I own a small* collection of alpaka bags ) which If you were regularly carrying heavier load I would recommend (assuming you want to go with a sling rather than a backpack *Between myself and my partner we own 7 alpaka bags and love them all.

Couple of points: 1. Please include the full length of the shoulder straps in all your reviews. This is a key indicator for many people who are tired of short straps. Saying there is “plenty” of strap is too vague. 2. When reviewing the Away sling, please reconsider your use of stereotypically gendered terms/activities for describing the bag’s usage. I don’t know why this bag warranted such special treatment when none of the other bags did. There’s nothing about the Away bag that screams “This bag is for women only”, it seems pretty unisex to me. I really enjoy your work, and I know you put a ton of time and effort into your videos. Also like the new music!
