In his 1896 short story The Sea Raiders, HG Wells describes a world where sentient octopuses and squid patrol the coast of Devon, England, feasting on human flesh. It’s one of the sci-fi master’s sillier stories. After all, how scary can a sea-based villain made of squishy stuff be?

Octopuses are incredibly intelligent, and several aquariums have had fish go missing only to discover that an octopus had escaped, eaten it and then crawled back into it's tank so as to play innocent

When I was a kid I used to earn spending money working on and repairing fishing nets. I'd spread them out on a floating dock and work away. I could only manage the work when the nets were wet. An octopus would come up every day and visit me. I would put bits of shrimp in my pockets and he'd search them out and remove them. He would take off my hat, look it over and put it back, usually turned the wrong way. His actions and movements never scared me. I was always impressed with how he'd watch me and appeard to be very curious. He would span an area that was about 6 feet wide and would occupy the area of the floating dock that was always about a foot or under water. We were friends for one summer and after that, I never saw him (or her?) again.

Yes, I've heard they don't live very long. I looked under the floating dock and everywhere else around the pier but never found him. I looked every day for a couple of weeks, no results. I did meet some harbor seals and played with them but every time someone would yell, "Watch out, kid!" they would leave. They would bit my flippers but not me and they did not act in a way that would scare me. I always wonered if they killed the octopus.

Most octopuses are relatively small non aggressive creatures. Years ago I was at the aquarium in Newport Oregon. They had a large octopus in an enclosure with an open top and visitors were allowed to put their hand in the water. If the octopus felt like it, it would wrap the end of a tentacle around you finger to feel it. Being curious creatures that happened a lot. No one was ever bitten or hurt by the octopus.

Or until all the ice melts due to global warming. The sea level will rise by more than 240 feet, millions will be displaced, countless coastal cities would be under water, therefore while we're struggling with refugees, the octopus arising will catch us off guard. Plus, the octopuses will have more access to sunken human artifacts so they can learn about us.

Z.E.D Nova There was just a story about a man who had a seafood place, who bought a 70 pound octopus. But he bought it to rescue it, and either has, or soon will, return it to the wild. He did this because he is an avid scuba diver, and in one of his dives some time ago, he was diving, encountered an octopus, and proceeded to play hide and seek with it for about 15 minutes. Apparently the octopus seemed to understand that it was a game, and that the diver had no intention of harming him (or her). He was so impressed by their intelligence (possibly sentience) that he has never served or consumed any octopuses ever again. If this one he rescued and freed has the ability to remember to hold grudges, they likely will remember some one who rescued them, and return them to freedom. And could even feel gratitude. Let’s no jump to conclusions and assume they are a menace. They may be more benign than we humans are. We certainly have killed far more of them, than they have of us. We have a rather bad habit of fearing what we don’t understand, or of an animal that isn’t a vertebrate. While some species may be able to walk on land, their real habitat is the ocean, and if we choose to enter their habitat, just show some respect, and not try to manhandle them, and possibly enjoy a benign relationship with them. Like most animals that survive, they certainly can take care of themselves, but it’s not like a human is their usual diet. It would be cool if we could learn how to communicate with them. I also know people dislike them because their body is so different from our own, but if we ever do make contact with alien life, we should not expect them to look like us. They may have a body type as different from us as we are from the octopus.

there are still some things you missed, if your in the water you have no chance, even michael Phelps would be toast, with his peak speed being 4.5 mph he'd be dead, really, really quick, octopuses can do 25 mph in quick bursts, and also you should've mentioned the giant pacific octopuses which can be 33 lbs, sounds like nothing till you see they have a length approaching 30 ft, and the blue ring octopus has a venom that can kill a human in minutes

The worker at the aquarium was not disliked: this was a form of play for the octopus. The worker even stated that she was not maddened by this, it was just play, and the octopus was a friend.

I'm safe, I have a bush turkey that has taken up residence & sits guard on my doormat each day. I don't know the ancestory, but to look at her face & neck, it's pretty obvious she's related to the other 2. Like Amber said on the Seth Myers show when looking at a cassowary "you look like a bird & dinosaur had a baby" lol yup they do have a distinctive look & that about sums it up imo. The octopus wouldn't dare!

@lilaclizard4504

Lizzie yup, insane!!!!!!! started out as a little baby, it's getting pretty big now & for some reason it seems to like the texture of my doormat or something! If I leave the door open, then I find her inside, mostly in my bedroom talking to herself in my mirror lol (only time I've ever heard her vocalise). If the door's closed, then she'll just sit/lie (and poop) on the doormat for hours each day. The other day I was on the phone & left the door open & heard flying in my kitchen. She'd got herself inside & through the house & then onto the windowsill & was flying at it, so I had to put a business call onto speaker phone while I grabbed a bush turkey that was destroying my kitchen (knocking everything over). I couldn't get her outside while holding the phone, so just put her on the ground & chased her out, she got as far as the front door mat & just flopped, half onto her back, legs in the air pointing at me, while I'm watching & laughing & thinking WTF! You should be totally freaked out & running away to hide & you're going to just flop & lie there & refuse to be chased any further?????? Pretty sure an emu would beat her in a one on one fight, BUT I have fences around my property high enough to keep an emu out, this little one used to walk between the pickets, but now she's too big to fit, so she just flies in & out via my roof. Emu can't do that :P

There was a story of a scientist who fed his octopus a rotten crab and no sooner than when he turned his back to go back to his other work did the rotten crab came flying out of the tank and strike him on the back of the head. He turned around to the octopus pouting in his tank giving him "the look".
