I'm sure Lucille Ball never thought that after 70 years people would still care about her show and still love it, it just shows how incredible it was and that funny never dies.

No, funny died in 1964 when Gracie Allen died. She was the true comic genius of 1950's television. She said utter nonsense to characters on the show and created hilarity by how confused the people she spoke with went insane just by what she said. If you are someone that thinks a pie in the face is hilarious, then keep drawing pictures with your crayons. If you want to see how misguided ideas affect the sanity of others, then you will agree that Lucy was totally lowbrow!

They also used the wrong apartment set for "Being the Ricardos." I picked up on that right away. They probably did it because the 2nd apartment the Ricardos occupied is more recognizable. Desi Arnaz was a genius when it came to making "I Love Lucy" work with the live studio audience and the 3 camera set up. I don't think he gets enough credit for all he's done for TV (Lucy too as far as Desilu goes).

Contrary to this video, Vivian Vance never claimed her contract had a weight clause. It was OTHER people who claimed it did. This was just an urban legend that was based on that gag contract that Lucy gave Vivian as a joke. (Vance actually lost weight over the course of the series.) And Vivian appeared with Lucy on that Dinah Shore Show in the '70s and read the contract, to Lucy's delight. It was some pretty funny stuff. And the backstory about the gag contract is that Lucy wrote it as a joke to present to Vivian at a surprise birthday party she threw for her. This is all discussed in detail in the biography of Vivian Vance.

Lucille Ball was such a genius at physical comedy, that it’s nearly impossible for any other actress to try to do anything near what Lucy could do. Comedy acting is such a rare ability, it’s innate. (Or it isn’t. 99.9% of people can’t do it.) I think the criticism of N Kidman not using extreme facial expressions, is not due to Botox & face fillers. I think it’s due to the same reason that Kidman didn’t draw on the fake lip lines with lipstick, as Lucille Ball did, iconically. Kidman didn’t want to look clownish. If she had used the big saucer wide eyes; and some of the large facial reactions that Lucy was such a master of, Kidman would have looked like a ridiculous imposter. And unfunny! Kidman would have probably wound up looking like she was faking and worse, “mugging”. Nicole Kidman is a very bright actor, and self aware of her professional abilities and limitations. She chose a more dignified acting approach.

But that’s the entire point of portraying a person as an actor. Lucille Ball didn’t care what she looked like when she was acting - she just wanted to make people laugh, which is pretty much the entire plot of Being The Ricardos. That she would neglect her own pride in order to be great. If Nicole Kidman was such a magnificent actress she would’ve displayed the same thing. She wouldn’t have cared about looking “clownish” to fully embody Lucille Ball. Debra Messing would’ve been a more accurate physical casting choice because she looks almost identical to her and isn’t afraid of looking “clownish”.

I was born in December of 1988 and my mom introduced me to I love Lucy when I was a kid. From there I was a Lucille Ball fanatic! I still love her and I own the whole I Love Lucy series! I also remember watching and tapping on VHS The 50th Anniversary of the I Love Lucy show in 2001 that ran a marathon of the show every night for a week straight. I still have those VHS tapes to this day and I have been collecting things of I Love Lucy for years and her other shows and movis! Being The Ricardos was brilliantly done and well acted by everyone in it! I cried at the end of the movie after seeing it in theaters with my mom. I also got chills every time I saw Nicole Kidman playing Lucille Ball like Lucy was right there with me. I remember as a kid wanting to meet Lucille Ball so bad and I told my mom that I was determined to meet her one day and my mom said that I could not meet her. I argued for a while and then said why not? My mom said because she is dead. I cried so hard when I heard that news and soon after I had a black and white dream in the middle of nowhere and saw Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance right outside of Lucy's Trailer with a star on the door with Lucy on it. They both looked like they did on I Love Lucy. I think that's because of how I remembered them at that time and I went up to Lucille Ball and said my mom and I are such big fans of your show. We watch it all the time. Lucille Ball said well thank you. Would you like an autograph and I said yes I would. She said do you have a pen and I am searching on myself for one and I said no I do not sorry. She said that's ok I will go get one and she went into her trailer. While I was waiting for Lucille Ball to come out, I was standing with Vivian Vance and we kept looking at each other not saying anything. I felt bad because I came to see Lucille Ball and not her. Just as the door of Lucille Ball's trailer was about to open I woke up and never got that autograph. I still to this day believe that Lucille Ball heard my sadness up in Heaven and her angle self came down in my dream just so I could meet her. I will treasure that dream forever in my heart, mind and spirit! I really do love Lucy (Lucille Ball) and always will!

I think a lot of people feel that way. Lucie Arnaz has said that they needed someone to be the real Lucille, not Lucy Ricardo; that was the reasoning behind not asking Messing to star. In 1926, Lucy entered John Murray Anderson's acting school. The star pupil there was 18 year-old Bette Davis. Lucy was 15. (Lucy on Bette: "she was great - even then; so quirky, so original") Anyway, the school wrote Dede Peterson, Lucy's mom who re-married & lived in Jamestown in upstate New York. I find it sad the movie failed to show how the 3 Stooges and the Marx Brothers helped her get into show business and how Harpo Marx and Zeppo Marx where even her legal representatives pre-first I Love Lucy season. She started out as the 3 Stooges make-up girl and even stared in some of their shorts and Larry Fine told her she was too funny and too good for them and sent her to The Marx Brothers where Groucho and Chico forced her to play as an extra in a few movies until Harpo and Zeppo demanded she got a bigger role in their movies, and she even got to be the main love interests in one of their last movies. During the movie you won't see a lot of the Marx Brothers as they and the 3 Stooges where behind the scenes demanding movie and tv companies sign her to a big deal or they would leave the business. Harpo and Zeppo had both been to law school at one point so yea. Lucy paid it forward on the I Love Lucy show by dying her hair red in respect to Larry Fine and Harpo Marx and even protect her female co-star Vivan Vance (Ethyl) from the guy who played Fred (William Frawley). Frawley was about 20 to 30 years older than Vance and would often call her a "stupid bitch" and Lucy called him on his shit and he stormed off, he had to be begged by Desi Arnez to come back and his reply was "I will do it for you but not that bitch!" Later that night he got a visit from not just Lucy but Moe Howard, Groucho Marx, and Sid Ceasar. The three male comedy legends pinned him to a wall and when he asked what he was going on Moe said, "we heard you were mean to the girls, they are better then you will ever be all you will be is just Fred."

There is no bigger I Love Lucy fan than me, but Being With The Ricardos is an unpleasant movie. It is mostly sniping and bickering. Of course most people are aware that their real life marriage had problems. This version of Lucille Ball is a harsh, angry person who takes out her misery on others. As I read somewhere, this movie is enough to make you hate Lucy, not love her. Everyone in the movie comes across as miserable. No one is very likable, with the possible exception of Desi. There were no light moments, no joy in this film. Who knows? Maybe that's the way it really was. But Sorkin made it very heavy. Contrary to many reviews, I didn't think Nicole Kidman got Lucy very well. Bardem did pretty well with Desi's accent. I never think it pays to play someone who is so alive and recent in our memory. I was sorry I even watched this film. I will stick with the the wonderful, timeless hilarity of the TV series.

There were no light moments because of all the dramatic stuff going on that "week", which as Mojo tells us, is fiction that they all happened the same week. Sorkin made a decision to overload the film with all that misery. The part I found completely unrealistic was that after Desi tells the audience about how Lucy was cleared of being a Communist and they go backstage to do the show, THAT is when Lucy confronts Desi with proof of his infidelity and he confesses. Right before they are about to go out and do the show? I didn't buy it. And as Mojo tells us, the article about Desi's infidelities didn't come out until years later.

I've been a fan of Lucille Ball and I LOVE LUCY since I could walk and have read almost every book and article about the show, so I was irritated somewhat with the liberties taken in BEING THE RICARDOS with timelines and throwing major events affecting the Arnaz's lives and the show itself into one specific week. This was a tool I suppose to inform viewers unfamiliar with Lucille and Desi's lives and the show's history about those events. It actually misinformed viewers regarding historical dates. I'm not going to be specific about the correct timelines because I hate spoilers, but I will gripe about lazy, misinformed writing: a character in BEING THE RICARDOS referred to the upcoming Friday night live-audience performance as a "taping". That term wouldn't have been in that character's lexicon in the 1950s because not only was I LOVE LUCY recorded on 35mm film -- the first sitcom to be filmed in front of a live audience in a sound studio for that matter -- but videotape was in its clunky infancy then and rarely used. The first United States sitcom to be videotaped was ALL IN THE FAMILY in 1971. Words do matter when communicating information in any medium, be it a biopic or a recipe in a cookbook.

A very fair-handed review, but ... Lucy and Desi were not an inter-racial couple. You need to brush up on your definition. Also, Lucy may have been the Queen of B-movies, but she was considered for the lead in "Gone With The Wind." Finally "Being the Ricardos" implies that "I Love Lucy" had a rotating director and suggested that Donald Glass was the director during the week the spans the movie. No such Donald Glass exists or ever existed. The director of the episode in production was Marc Daniels who directed the first 38 episodes of "I Love Lucy." Lucille Ball was so pleased with his directing that he directed 14 episodes of the original "Star Trek" series, which was produced by Desilu. All of the "Star Trek" episodes he directed are classics.

One glaring historical inaccuracy that few reviews seem to be picking up on is the whole "Bolshevik" business in Cuba. The movie makes repeated reference to Desi having experienced suffering at the hands of communists, but his family fled Cuba due to the 1933 Cuban Revolution (two decades before the communist one) which was led by the very person (Batista) who was later deposed by Castro. I enjoyed the movie, but that drove me crazy!

The Bolksheviks founded the Communist Party of Cuba (Castro's eventual and current leading party) in 1929 & many of its former members were in both Batista and Castro's administration, most notable Carlos Rafael Rodríguez & Blas Roca Calderio. Desi's family was directly affected by Batista's revolution of 1933 because his father was involved in Stgo de Cuba's government. Where are the inaccuracies?

🤔 Fred did not fall from the piano bench when he & Ethel were sitting next to each other. Fred nudged her very hard off with his arm on that original tv episode. And another thing... They got the living room wrong. No window in that particular F.& E. season 1 fighting episode. Widow is from season 2 or 3, l believe. Right?'

They switched apartments after Little Ricky was born. Some neighbors, on another floor, IIRC, were depressed that their apartment seemed so empty after their daughter married. The Ricados needed a bigger place, what with all the baby's things so they switched apartments.

The film did not capture the love, devotion, musicality, chemistry, charisma magic they both had, the 4 had, the show had and their comedic talent and his business talent as a studio mogul. The main actors looked old and unapilling and untalented. Had to vinge watch I love Lucy to recuperate.

I loved this show so much as a kid (still do) one of the reasons being that it was pretty much the only depiction of a white woman and a Latino as a couple - just like my own mom and dad. Thanks for winning that fight Lucy, it means a lot to me.

@@jamesrivera4947 still doesn't change the fact that the producers didn't want Desi to be Lucy's onscreen husband because they thought audiences would not accept white Lucy with a Latino husband (whatever you want to say about his background, that's how audiences saw him.) And doesn't change the fact that Lucy persevered, and it made a difference to the OP that Lucy did, to be able to see a couple who looked like her parents on TV.

It should be noted that "everyone" came to Lucy's defense because she was a cash cow in the still-young industry of Television. Like today's "Cancel Culture," you are protected only by the bottom line you bring to your employer. Joan Davis would not have received such support.

I think it's a case by case kinda thing: CNN sent Chris packing even knowing he was also a "cash cow" as you mentioned .... on the other hand, Tucker at Fox has done and said everything except sacrificing a new born on live tv ... still, he remains for the same reasons you mentioned.

This movie was depressing and bitter. Lucy seemed like a obsessive, bitter, back-stabbing woman. She treated everyone around her like the help. Her and Vivian Vance were supposed to have been friends. Some friend. She was cruel and jealous of her. The man that played Desi Arnaz did a good job but he wasn’t as handsome as Desi. He wasn’t ugly but Desi was gorgeous and the man looked older than Desi. Lucy being like this could be true because a lot of comedians are really depressed. She may have been hard to work with. Maybe the movie is showing the real side of things. Hollywood tells lies of harmony when it spreads chaos.

Obviously the "wrong" picks are more along the timeline for the show and the J. Edgar Hoover call. While that's true I think this movie is more about Lucy and Desi. I think the reason why these are "right" had a lot to do with the fact that Lucie and Desi Jr. were consultants for this movie. Lucie said that she and Desi Jr. thought that this movie did a good job on the reflection of their parents that she thought cast and especially Nicole and Javier did a wonderful job representating Lucy and Desi. This movie may have try to condense the events into a week but it's a movie, they do that often.

@@mermaidtingzzz Lucille Ball was an incredible and savvy business woman. Desi credited her for her talent and intelligence many times. Had Lucille Ball not have excellent instincts in business, this world may not have some of the biggest franchises in entertainment history. Specifically, Star Trek and Mission Impossible. Those shows were rejected by large studios many times but they ended up bringing them to Desilu and Lucille Ball just had a feeling about them, especially Star Trek, and she signed them to the studios. And like they say, the rest is history. 😎👍

It’s the same with me as a Puerto Rican. My husband is Anglo-Saxon but we don’t count as “interracial”, especially since the group that matters (the government) recognizes me as “white” as well. If I get a ticket or the time I spent 18 hours in country jail, I was charged and processed as a white woman.

@@covfefe_drumpfh Since I didn't learn of my heritage until I was much older, I felt so cheated. The man who raised me is/was/and will always be my daddy and my hero. He looked at this innocent baby and made me his own...because I was. Yet I will always have a large part of my heart reserved for the man who gave me life. I am blessed that I had these two amazing men in my life.
