Hey CJ, the trick to #7 is to turn on your turn signal before switching lanes and you won’t have that issue. #8 press stop button to turn off car then press it one more time then all will shut down. This is a feature dated back in my 2014 535i M sport.

The car does have remote start. Go to car > settings > air conditioning (second to last I think) > precondition and ventilation > remote start > and check the box.

Pre-LCI never comes with remote start, LCI comes with remote start as an option

I have an M2 with the HK system. I replaced all the speakers, installed the Match UP 7BMW amp, used that to drive a second sub amp, cut an 8" hole in the middle of the rear deck to install a sub (those jokes under the seats are not subs they're just mid woofers) and then tuned it for months and it finally sounds pretty great. Really hard to get excited about buying another BMW knowing I not only have to pay more for the badge but then thousands in to an aftermarket audio system just to get the kind of audio quality I can get from a 35k Acura or Lexus. Really wish Acura didn't gimp their Type-S motor.

Best feature: Price. Picked up a used 21 and it cost $50K less than the Shelby GT500 I wanted. 500+ HP daily driver, 28 mpg on the freeway, all wheel drive, what more could you want! Agree on the cup holders, awkward location

Good review, apart from a thing. No one is allowed to complain about the cupholders in a BMW. I'm convinced the company doesn't want beverages in their cars, as they've demonstrated for decades. I have the 18' M550. My last BMW was an 02' 530 (E39). The E39 had cupholders so damn dainty, if you owned it for 5 years and they weren't broken, then you didnt drive it or followed the no-beverage rule.

I believe ur remote start is the lock button 3 times... if it doesn't work it's literally as easy as turning the feature on... u just need access to or have a decent scanner / ISTA

I agree, some of the complaints are legit. For a car that price some standard features should be added. Heck, my Kia can remote start and cool the car. My 5 series however I think should have stepped up in that category. With that said. I still have my sight on an upgrade to the M550 in a few months.

from what I read, seems it had to do with legal issues in Germany that have since been resolved. Thats why we have seen some models starting to get it or have it as an option now. (From what I've heard and read)

Does the steering wheel intervention occur when you use the turn signal? I have a 540 M sport and I never have to fight the wheel to change lanes. I always use my turn signal though.

No remote start is due to European emission regulation most if not all European auto makers, Benz,Audi,Porsche doesn not have remote start. Now in 2021,2022 they started to add this feature.

for number 8: the cars ignition mode will stay on for a limited time if the car is turned off by pressing and instantly releasing the start/stop button. If the button is pressed and held for a second or two, it will turn off the way you would like

I have a 2014 535xi with the Harmon kardon system it sounds great to me I love it actually I hope bmw ain't botch that up I would like to think a M550I would sound just as great. I'm up north an they don't make no remote start system as well for my car that really sucks but i am in love with this car hoping it would be my upgrade. Maybe!

I brought the car to the dealer Friday to have the software upgraded in the car. Hopefully that makes it more reliable. It did add my remote 3D view option. Thats a good start!

Can’t you use the remote ventilation feature to cool the car down? It can be activated from display key or Connected app.

Yes, you can. IF the connected app is working, and it doesn't send refrigerated (AC) air, it just recirculates the hot air in the car. So it does not really cool the car, just moves the air.

BMW doesn't care about liquids in the car. They expect you to drive in a way that you won't want them. BMW doesn't expect you to use lane departure intervention and only expects you're using it on long highway trips - not expected for maneuvering in the city. I'm not an unmitigated apologist or rah rah for BMW, in fact they piss me off more than ever now. But then I look at the alternatives like Lexus and come back.

I'm thinking about buying 2017 - 2019 M550i so I would like to ask: Are there any major issues with the car, engine etc.? Should I be worried? Are the maintenance cost very high or is it comparable with 540i? I cant decide between 540i and M550i. My brain is telling me to go for 540i because of lower consumption and lower maintenance costs and reliability but my hearth is telling me to go for M550i.

I went 540i. B58 is the better engine imo easy to make power, reliable, and better fuel economy.

All Beemers are the same with accessory power. Turn it off with foot on brake and then with foot off brake press start stop again and everything will power off.

I don’t think it’s is. If I remember right it’s pretty basic, only has a remote control and you can’t watch or do two things separately on each. Can get or used to be able to get a DVD player in center console or play from usb.

I was actually thinking of doing a video on my build for that reason! Thank you for the suggestions. would love to have had Dynamic Handling, but unfortunately, that wasn't included in the vehicle on the lot. Heard it make a world of difference!

A lot of these are annoying complaints but much were known when he bought the car. Like cupholders are (for the most part) standard sized across all passenger cars and are made to fit a 12oz can/16oz bottle. I don't think the factory was testing trying to fit a big gulp in there. Though I feel your pain as I use a fake Yeti and the thing doesn't fit anywhere lol. As far as the remote start goes it's a German car - that's completely common and has been for some time. They're emission regulations are CA strict. You can get tickets if your car is idling more than 1-2m. So they removed the remote start from any MB/BMW/Audi models for that reason. You can still absolutely get an aftermarket system just make sure the dealer you regularly work with isn't a d*ck and uses that as an excuse to void warranty claims.

I've heard from others that have the upgraded B&W system that it is not worth the money, and doesn't sound as good as systems they have built in the past. Its quite a bit of money to shell out too.

It is actually a very good car system. It is one of my favorite things about the car especially when listening to USB audio with Tidal. For that matter even the better bluetooth codecs. Definitely better than the BMW HK's systems and the HK system I had in my last car. On a leased vehicle it is definitely worth it if you spend a lot of time in your car, especially stuck in traffic. Not sure how it compares to other B&W systems, but it also sounds better than the Bose and B&O systems and other HK systems I tried in the other cars I tested before getting this one.

64klkl thats good to know 😅. My next car is going to be the m550i when my m340i lease ends. I have the Hk system and it’s just ok. I had a 2012 Audi A7 with the B&O system and I’ve never heard anything better yet even today. The Mercedes Burmeister system isn’t even close. I haven’t heard the bmw 5 series and up B&W setups yet. I have a bunch of B&W home audio speakers and absolutely love them.

I had a HK in my 2015 WRX and I have the BW in the 2018 M550i and it the difference is night and day. I'm sure HK might sell a different version between manufacturers perhaps but the audio is SO clear with the volume up and the bass thumps enough to give you a headache actually lol. You're probably also paying for the fancy little lights inside the speakers...

Agree on the phone tray. Also I keep knocking the transmission lever out of sport. Crazy they can make such an awesome car and miss the small stuff. I always engage the passenger seat belt even when nobody is in the front. If not it will just rattle on cornering or hard acceleration. Little gripes in the scheme of things. Lastly on the 550 you lose fog lights my 2017 540 had them but the intakes for the inter coolers takes up the space. Almost forgot. All the other models even the x5 has sport displays showing g force and acceleration I sent mine back to the dealer to program them. After 2 days their programmer from bmw New Jersey said the M550 doesn’t have these functions. How crazy is that when an x5 loaner had multiple sport displays! Go figure

Gotta love it when Americans review proper cars and complain about their cups not fitting the holders. Well these are standard cup holders and I never had any issues 😳 U should buy a truck and fit 3l bottles and grande coffees in a cup holders. My car is way too classy for ur taste obv... Europeans love it, coffee should come in small cups 😉

Had a 2013 M550 and 1. Car got extremely hot while sitting. 2. High pressure fuels pumps went out, luckily they were recalled and replaced by BMW. 3. The remote starter cost over $1000😢. Besides that fast, excellent daily driver.

Thank you for pointing out all the bad things about your BMW M550i. I will tell you that Mercedes does give you a remote start so that you will be comfortable when you get in your car. Another thing is that Mercedes gives you an option for a panoramic roof which you can't get with BMW. Those are just some of the nice things that I love about Mercedes. The interior of the Mercedes is the best. I love my Mercedes and will continue to buy Mercedes in the future...

I can't argue with anything on the list, but far more annoying than anything listed is this car's dangerously poor throttle tip in. It's almost undrivable without a tune or throttle enhancement device. Another thing that wasn't mentioned is the fake engine noise that's pumped into the cabin via the speakers. I disconnected that nonsense the first day I had the car.

Starting at 0% throttle opening (after braking, from a standing stop, or any time your foot is off of the throttle pedal), throttle body opening does not correspond to throttle pedal position. It lags significantly behind. To see a graphic representation, there's a YT video by RK Tunes wherein they're dyno tuning an M550i. They show a graph of pedal position vs throttle opening. During tip in, there's a period of time when the pedal is to the floor and the throttle valve is closed. BMW is by no means the only manufacturer to do this. It's actually pretty common since the throttle-by-wire was introduced. My 2017 F150, 2018 Silverado, and 2019 Transit 3.5 Ecoboost are even worse than my M550. My brother has a 2011 Silverado diesel and reports that a throttle enhancement device made a huge improvement in drivability on that as well. There are multiple YT videos showing a throttle body and a gas pedal on a bench where they demonstrate the lag between pedal position and throttle opening.

Ahh, yes!! I hear ya now. It’s horrible on my ram 2500 Cummins. I’ve only heard it referred to as turbo lag. It’s brutal, especially at an intersection when you hit the gas, take your foot off the pedal or hesitate for a second, then try to go again.. it has almost gotten me in trouble a few times.

The first n63 engines had their share of problems. Yes, they were costly. Newer N63TU variants have improved alot, bmw has upgraded alot of parts. Only time will tell, we'll see in a few years.
