A big garbage bag on the back seat of the car allowed me to sit, then slide into place comfortably for the physio appointments. Invaluable, too, was a booklet dedicated to keeping notes on the post-op recovery; medication doses and timing, bowel movements, fluid intake, change of dressing, the appearance of the wound (swelling, redness, etc), ice application, showers, physio appointments and exercises.

I had almost all of those items after my knee replacement. The walker and ice machine were life savers. My shower has a built-in bench, so I still use that (lazy!!). I put a doubled-up lanyard around the handle of my grabber and made sure to use the lanyard every time. That little lanyard made sure I didn't drop the grabber, so I didn't need a second one. As for toileting, I just pushed my walker all the way over the toilet, turned around and kicked my surgical leg out straight. Then I used the handles of the walker to lower myself to the seat, so I didn't need to purchase a riser for it and saved a buck or two. All I can add is - the swelling lasts for MONTHS, so don't be discouraged if you don't get full mobility back right away, just KEEP DOING YOUR EXERCISES and it'll work out for you. It sure did for me and I'm so glad I did it. The pain was unbearable at first, but worth it in the long run. Best of luck to anyone who is planning to go through a knee replacement in the future.

I was lucky. I had bilateral knee replacement and opted for upper arm crutches. Went into water therapy after the staples were removed ( I am a long distant swimmer) and did not need the crutches after a week of therapy. I had a fantastic surgeon and have never looked back . I highly suggest a bath chair even before the surgery. This July it will be 20 years!

My wife had her right knee replaced a few months ago and still uses the shower chair. You were lucky. My wife never used crutches - went to the waker and then the cane and she's almost off the cane. The one thing they made us buy and she never used once was the commode. Definitely recommend the cryocuff... freeze water bottles instead of ice... much easier to change.

A "sock put'er on'er" was a great help. One puts the sock on the device which opens up the sock. Then slide the whole foot, toes first into the device and then pull the attached cords and the sock slides right over the toes up to the ankle where you can pull the sock much easier! "Ms. Malff's" book was a great hit, by the way! Thanks again!

After I was released from rehab after a vestibular crisis I could not stand without a walker. I had no way of getting a shower chair , but I had those ubiquitous white plastic lawn chairs. They fit perfectly in the bathtub. I did have a handheld shower and I have waist length hair It was so easy to shower and wash my hair. Back support and arms to help raise you to stand up. I also used that same chair after I had my knee replaced. For ice after my knee surgery, I bought several of the large ice pads. I froze them, put them in a cooler and put the cooler on my bed. I set the alarm for every two hours . I tossed the old pad on the floor and opened the cooler and put a new pad on my knee. Slept through the night except for those interruptions. For heels slides, I had some furniture, silicon slider pads. They worked perfectly on the wood and vinyl floors. A plastic tablecloth with a felt backing was perfect on the bed . The felt kept the tablecloth from sliding around. My best assistive aid came out of necessity. Because of my vestibular issue, I have balance issues. It’s easier to walk fast or jog (although I can’t do that anymore after my knee replacement) then it is to walk slow. My therapist explained it’s like riding a bike. It’s easier to go fast than slow. But when I went on my walks around the neighborhood, I was fearful of falling if I had to stop suddenly or when the pavement was uneven. A walker couldn’t keep up with me, and I felt that the handles weren’t high enough. Shopping carts are the perfect walker but obviously I don’t have one of those. One day I saw a neighbor walking her baby in a stroller. At a garage sale. I bought one of those little umbrella strollers. It was perfect except it kind of flew all over the place so I put a cinderblock in it. Now I’m the gray hair lady that walks around the neighborhood very fast, pushing a stroller with the cinderblock in it. Knock on wood haven’t fallen once.

I had all those things during my first hip replacement. Even a second grabber to get the grabber I dropped. Borrowed the walker. Had made up a bunch of meals and froze them ahead of time so no cooking needed during recovery. Just reheated the meals. Didn't need the cane much. Just walked a lot. My ortho doc did not believe in Physical Therapy. Had the anterior hip operation in which I really had no restrictions. Doc said just to walk. Getting my second hip replaced soon and looking forward to a new puppy after healing up.

I survived after my knee replacements last year watching your videos. They were a tremendous help! I used a shower bench that was over the bathtub and enabled me to shower safely without having to step over the side of the tub. Definitely used my walker then cane, and had a bedside commode that went over my toilet. Also was limited to only being able to sit on 2 different chairs in my main living room because the chairs in my family room sat too low. I really didn’t need anything else. And the garbage bag was so helpful for those dreaded heal slides. Moral of this story get up and move and do your exercises, and ice in between. Just had my 1 yr checkup on the L knee and have 135 degree bend and -2 degree ability to straighten my leg. Same measurements on the R that was replaced 15 months ago ago. The work truly pays off. TY to you both for the invaluable advice! ❤️

Something else I needed after THR was comfortable pants. My leg was bruised and swollen from my waste to my toes. The PT came and we cut the elastic around the bottom of my sweat pants. That made them more comfortable and easier to take off and put on. It is the little things that really help.

A bag of frozen peas..... my brother wrapped this in a towel and put it on my knee to ease pain and manage swelling. We grow our own veg so don't eat frozen peas but this was a handy economical idea. He bought me shoes and slippers that were comfortable and safe... declaring my footwear as only good for lighting the fire! William also bought me a gorgeous springer spaniel puppy and Barney is now a big affectionate 3 year old who is full of energy and fun. William comes every day to walk with him and work in the garden and I am so fortunate to have them both cause there is never a dull moment with them around. Vera in Northern Ireland

I was in my hospital bed (After a right knee replacement) and Physiotherapy and a couple of nurses came to get me up. They brought with them a zimmer, wheelchair and some NHS crutches) I refused all preferring my own European style crutches from my left knee replacement. I got out of bed and walked out of the ward with a Physiotherapist on either side. I was then asked to squat down, bending my newly replaced knee to 130 degrees. It did help that the epidural was still working and my right leg was numb from hip to toe. I could not feel a thing. The epidural carried on working for at least another 6 hours. As I ate with the epidural still working on day 2 I had the worst constipation ever. They filled every hole with laxatives. The only thing I needed when I returned home was a pee bottle as getting to the toilet quickly was not on. After 5 weeks I was walking without assistance. Never saw a Physiotherapist except for the 3 days I was in hospital. I have a reclining stationary bike which I did my exercises on. I prepared all my own meals and drinks. I hired a dog walker to walk my dog. On week 3 I took my dog for a walk using one crutch every morning. The dog walker did the afternoon walk. On day 12 I removed the staples and stopped taking morphine.

After my knee replacement I switched from a regular 2 wheel bike to a 3 wheel recumbent etrike. It was of course more stable than a two wheel bike but it reduced the pressure on my knee and with the electric motor it allowed me to make the peddling easier. Also, my physical therapist had me sitting stationary on my etrike, with the brakes locked, peddling backwards just to provide exercise therapy to my knee. I started doing the ebike therapy, peddling backwards within two weeks post surgery. Within three weeks post surgery, I was riding my recumbent etrike normally using the electric motor to assist reducing pressure on my knee. By my third month post surgery I was back riding my recumbent etrike normally only using the electric motor as needed. IMHO, The recumbent etrikes are a fantastic tool!

A long strap with a loop at the end to lasso my foot, and then lift lift the leg over to the side to get out of bed. Toilet rails that slid next to the toilet to provide a way to steady myself up and down. And the transportation to and fro appointments needed to be a vehicle that wasn't too high to get into, or too low to get out of. And prunes to counteract the constipating effects of some painkillers.

Great ideas. I have two more. A leg-lifter to assist in getting the affected leg up and onto the mattress and from the mattress to the floor. Also a wedge-type foam pillow with a groove to rest your leg while you sleep. It also helps relieve the swelling. Both of these came in very handy for my surgeries.

I’ve had both knees replaced by different doctors 2 1/2 years apart. I had physical therapy come to my home for the first 3 weeks and ended up with a stiff knee and needed a medical manipulation, which didn’t work. It took a year for my knee to stop hurting and to extend fully. Now it’s fine. For my second knee surgery, I had an appointment to actually go to the physical therapy office the next day after surgery and I had a much better outcome, so I suggest doing PT ASAP after surgery. I recommend, also, to stay on top of your pain during those first few weeks and take a stool softener. Becky

After partial knee replacement I used the walker for 5 days, switched to cane, used that consistently for about a week, then just took it when I had to walk a distance across parking lots or such. And to the dog park due to uneven ground. I'd done several meals and frozen them and my husband is a good cook. We already had a bench & handheld shower head so those were handy.

Invest in a Yeti tumbler for drinks that need FAR less refills and will remain chilled. Do your research with these though. They have options with straws that may make life easier for you. Other options have a slider that you retract. Think twice if you are offered the option of an insert, that is very likely unnecessary. Don't be afraid to purchase a YetiTumbler that appears larger than you needs, you may opt to add ice, that will take up room. If you are looking to keep 12 oz cans or 16 oz plastic or other bottles chilled, look at their Colster options, but be careful when choosing, one size is for each of the above and they have another meant for the slim cans of hard seltzer. Amazon has a great selection. Do not purchase any option that has a tightly closed cap for anything carbonated, it could explode, the slider (retractable) cap is okay for that.

Excellent topic. I love you guys. Very informative with a bit of humor. I purchased everything recommended with the exception of ice and slider. Which I plan to investigate for my next surgery. Following surgery the physical therapist recommended a rope or plastic strap, which I used immediately following surgery and a couple days thereafter for assistance with getting out of bed. I called it "my buddy ". These items were indispensable. Unfortunately according to me I had an unsuccessful total knee surgery 5 years ago. For the first few years I was pleased but then began having excruciating pain with limited mobility. Doctors, I am considering a reversal surgery. Would you please consider commenting on this topic in an upcoming video. Thanks for the great work.

tkr 2 summers ago now - omg - so painful - i would say best thing if you can get one of those automatic ice therapy cooling systems - its a game changer and will save your helper from getting you ice every 2 hours for weeks on end - next - don't forget your good friend oxycontin - 😂 - pain meds make me vomit - but i learned quickly that if i let the pain get too bad i was in trouble - so take your pain management as ordered!!! also - if you can - a reclining chair to rest and sleep in is a good idea -

After three different foot surgeries and a ripped Achilles tendon. I put my recliners on a wooden bases with trim on top to hold the legs on the platform. The platform is about 5 inches tall and reenforce d, so when I go to get up, the chair pushes me down to the floor, so it's easier to get up. (Sorta like a lift chair, except I call it a dump chair). Regular recliners make you shove your foot arch straight down and push up with your thigh, which caused my arches to be inflamed! It still works and gives you height to get you going. Also, put honey on my insection and hardly have a scar on my ankle. And I healed much faster than my foot surgeries

Along the same line as the knee slider you referenced, I used (6 weeks post surgery) our outdoor swing. This was the large ceder pole style. Once on the swing, I would gently rock back and forth forcing my knee to feel a slight tug with each forward and back motion of the swing. I also made 1-2 trips/day in out hot tub. Its now been 11 months and I’m feeling great.

I have most of the things that you suggested but I didn't have knee or hip replacement surgery. I had back surgery and about a year and a half later I had neck surgery. The walker helps with many kinds of surgeries and I was already using a cane before surgery. The grabber is ideal for lots of people! And can be fun for everyone! You can always tie a string to the 2nd grabber and tie it to your chair too so you will always have access to it. I also got a shower chair and a wall grabber so I had something to grab while getting into the shower. It also helps to have someone around who can help you and cook for you. With any surgery, you can't spend a lot of time standing at the stove. With both of my surgeries, I spent about a week in a facility across from the hospital. I had 3 types of therapy each day and had 3 meals served every day. I received many of these aids at this facility, even one that helps you put on socks without bending over. There were other handheld devices that helped with many tasks. I did have a scope on one knee 20 or so years ago and I've never hurt as bad as I did when the epidural wore off.😫 I wouldn't be surprised if I had to have knee replacement one day but for now, I don't want to think about it. I think anything would be easy after back and neck surgery but I don't want to think about it for a long time! But I have all the tools I need!😉 Thanks for sharing another great video!👍

1) leg leash to pick your surgical leg up into bed or into a car, into shower etc. 2) hip-shaped ice packs (2)- one in freezer while the other is on; then swap. On Amazon. 3) something to pad walker grips; I had really bad numbing and nerve damage (to the point my hands were unable to even pick up my phone). I used crutches after the walker, and no cane, in case some folks are more comfy with those. 4) a rolling cart for your laundry basket that you can push in front of you to move your laundry to and from machines. 5) a rollator with a shelf/basket to place items on as you navigate your home. 6) pillows or wedge to raise surgical leg to help bring swelling under control

I had one grabber at the beginning and soon came to realize I needed a 2nd. So true. Walker and toilet seat riser were essential. I was driving one week after the left hip and three weeks after the right. I was supposed to wait four weeks after the right, but I was naughty. I love my new titanium hips. I will be having hip replacement. Did you get an "ice machine" that they mentioned?
@Judy-fi7ce
@Judy-fi7ce 2 ай бұрын
@@impish22 They offered an ice machine and I tried it, but it was difficult to keep it in place. The ice machine they offered me was more for knee replacement, as the straps wrapped around the knee, not a hip. I used ice cubes inside a plastic bag which was then placed inside a pillowcase. My surgeon recommended this and I found it to be effective and easy to keep next to my hip. I kept ice on my hip(s) 24-7 for two weeks. I attribute the successful healing to this. Wishing you a successful surgery and healing.

Another informative video. I had knee replacement, and two things I found useful was, 1. A plastic sleeve that covers the leg so I could shower an 2. Most important to save my marriage was a device like a long thin pole with a loop at the end to get around your foot so I could lift the leg myself at night to get out of bed to pee so I didn't have to wake up my wife . I woke her up two nites to raise my leg and place it down from the bed. That was two nites to many lolo

The walker definitely. I could walk without it but the physical therapists (pre and post op) convinced me that it's the fastest way to regain a normal gait. The ice machine - I didn't have one but my ice packs were so clumsy the machine would have been a huge improvement. A pee bottle if your bed is a ways from the toilet. And I had a flashlight that hooked onto the walker. Just for extra light at night. Oh, and pre-op, practice getting on and off the toilet with just arm strength. If it's difficult you can rent grab bars. I was ok, but it was a worry for some in our pre-op class.

I’ve been watching you gentlemen for a few years now and truly enjoy your banter but also find your advice extremely helpful. I’m getting ready to schedule my 2nd knee replacement, my 1st was in 2001 so many things have changed. I’m now just 70 and consider myself very active until lately due to the pain. Circumstances out of my control due to taking care of a loved one I’m now able to schedule my surgery. I’m doing pre op exercises at home but am extremely anxious about this surgery. I can’t seem to find the cooling system you suggest and would appreciate any help in finding any information on where to find it. I tried to freeze the video but still couldn’t see the name on the one in this video. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

For knee replacement, a dog leash to help pull your leg on top of the bed and also for making it bend while laying on your tummy. With the toilet riser, we had a grab handle and/or a temporary handles to help lower and raise the body. We had everything you mentioned. I had a single knee and a year later my husband had bilateral to one up me ..lol.

I’d had so much pain before hip replacement, that whatever pain I expected to experience afterwards was nominal and I switched to ibuprofen by day three. Incidentally, as the pain in my thigh, knee, calf, ankle and foot continued to get worse until I couldn’t use my left leg, I never had pain in my hip so never suspected it was the culprit. I do have some back issues and it was suspected nerve issues with surgery deemed only 33% successful with the same percentage of it making it worse or no change at all, so I just kept trying to adapt and bought more and more walking aids to keep the weight off that leg. As I’d always been very physically active, it was devasting for me. It turned out it was all referred pain so who knew? Ack! So much lost time. My hip was completely done for by the time I had an inkling that my hip might be involved and made an appt with an orthopedic a surgeon. That last year when I couldn’t put weight on that leg, I had a cane, I had an indoor rollator, an absolutely awesome Swedish Trionic Veloped for walking my dog and to enjoy the outdoors, and those crutches that hold the weight on your forearms (I could adjust the angle and lock them) because the fingers on my right hand had gone numb from so much pressure of my hand on the cane to keep weight off that left leg. SO. Yes to the rollators and canes and if you love the outdoors, splurge on a Trionic Veloped. I still use mine to walk my dog (his leash is attached to it) as I can walk further, faster and in better alignment using it, even after hip replacement. It’s also a great mule carrying layers of clothing, my coffee or water and all sorts of amenities. I will go anywhere too. I’ve had it on rough trails and in the snow. And, we bought a 3” high cool looking raised Koehler seat for our toilets…good for these 70+ year olds and they don’t look like “old people live here.” Those remain on our toilets today. After surgery I also added a padded seat ring on the main bathroom toilet as I chose to have posterior surgery over anterior after doing research. Every little bit of height helps. That came off after a couple of weeks. All I can say is that although my left hip was complete toast before surgery, it’s now the belle of the ball. My right hip is okay but when I do chair yoga, it’s like dragging my good right hip through the exercises compared to my wonderful bionic hip. Is it wrong to want the right hip to go bad so that I can have two superb functioning hips and legs? I do have those back issues along with scoliosis at the base of my spine so there will always be some glitchiness walking. I want you docs to know that I watched every single one of your videos before my surgery and was so well prepared for before, during and afterward, I’m sure that contributed to an easy recovery. Now my right knee that had part of the ACL removed in my 50s when I tore it jumping off a horse, is complaining. I’ll work with it to avoid surgery unless necessary but if it ever needs it, I’ll be watching all your knee replacement videos too. Thanks! Oh yes, and two grabbers, a short one and long one. Still indispensable!

I found great use of a yoga strap the first couple of weeks for assisting lifting you leg up from bed. Throw it over your foot and help to raise your leg. Later the strap assisted in pulling back the leg for flexion. Discussed the later use with my physio who was really on board for its use.

Don't be afraid to ask questions before surgery what you need. The P.T. & O.T. can help you & where in your area to find them. Who knows perhaps before surgery you may find a theft shop, all you need is a good cleaner( even if they cleaned them you as I would ) & wipe with rubbing alcohol.

I was just told that I need to have both my knees replaced. Is it better to get them both done at the same time or better 1 at a time.? What if after you have 1 done, it scares you enough that you don't want surgery on the other knee ? I've been married for almost 44 years at this time, and I do have him for help, so i will not be alone. Hope you have time to reply to my questions Have a great day, and thanks again. 😊

Do you have something like grab bars in your shower? You want to make sure you don't fall getting in and out. That said, it wasn't too difficult for me. I forget if I put the "good" or "bad" foot into the shower first and the second one came over the edge of the tub pretty easily. I had the anterior approach and bending wasn't a restriction.

When a car crash fractured my patella I had a huge problem with scar tissue and reaction to the hardware. My doctor put me on a continuous motion device after removing the hardware and it helped to some extent. I'll have to consider future knee replacement surgery so I'm afraid scar tissue buildup will be a serious problem. What would you recommend? (Wish I could move to Canada first).

So we used to use them all the time. The data suggests it is not beneficial long term but we would say they may benefit those who are at higher risk of being stiff like patients who are very stiff preop or who have poor pain control

Hi, i love watching your videos, really informative. Im in the UK and due to have TKR in 10 days time and i was wondering about your thoughts on CPM machines. Thanks docs😊

People here are praising them. I just used the "good" leg under the "bad" side - foot under calf, and it works like a lift. Give it a try, you'll see what I mean. It works for both getting in and out of bed. But the lifters are preferred by some.
