One Underrated/Overlooked song from the first 10 Prince albums: 1) In Love (from For You '78) 2) It's Gonna Be Lonely (from Prince '79) 3) Do It All Night (from Dirty Mind '80) 4) Private Joy (from Controversy '81) 5) Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) (from 1999 '82) 6) Computer Blue (from Purple Rain '84) 7) Tamborine (from Around The World In A Day '85) 8) Life Can Be So Nice (from Parade '86) 9) It (from Sign O' The Times '87) 10) Eye No (from Lovesexy '88) This makes for a cool mixtape. I've always been drawn to Prince's more "avant-purple" sounds.

I agree with both of you - “girlfriend” is a great track but “Housequake” should’ve been second single off SOTT - that would’ve kept the momentum going into “U got the look” and he would’ve HAD to tour the states that fall - but then there’s be no lovesexy so maybe it’s better the way it played out

I love all of Prince's music, but one of my favourite underrated Prince songs is Solo from his album, Come. It sounds haunting to the point that it sometimes makes me cry, but not in a bad way. I have often found myself crying because the melody is beautiful & sad all at the same time. Thank you so very much for taking the time to make this video. When i think underrated I always think of Private Joy. It's such a great pop/dance song that is largely forgotten from the Controversy album. I remember it being used for local jazz dance performances in the 80's but it was never on the radio and had no video. Prince only played it during the Controversy tour in 81 so he may not have thought much of it either but i still think it is great

My favorite Prince album is Parade. The song Kiss is the only song, from that album, that did and still does get heavy radio air play. So, for me, every other song on Parade would be one of Prince's most underrated songs. I know people, that are fans of Prince, yet can't name one other song from Parade, except Kiss.

@@PrincesFriend I didn't know Ahmir well or anything. He worked on the other side of our office. The most conversation, that I had with him, was "Hi" and "How you doing" in passing. There were roughly around 100 people in our office. It's nice to see how well he's done for himself. It's interesting when you see people you knew before they were famous, and now they're on tv shows and movies, etc. My 4th grade teacher, from Catholic school, Dom Irrera is now a stand up comedian and actor, who's been in films like The Big Lebowski, a Robert Townsend movie, done standup on the late night talk shows, and now plays casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City and comedy clubs all over the country. But, I still think of him as the most crazy, funny, didn't care about the rules teacher I ever had.

It's hard for me to define what 'underrated' means in terms of Prince's music, as I'm not really that tuned-in to the general fan consensus, but here are 10 personal faves of mine that I think might qualify: Welcome to the Dawn (the acoustic version on The Truth CD. Don't know if any other version exists. Possibly my favourite Prince track. I don't think I've ever heard a single other person ever talk about it.) Family Name Te Amo Corazon Fury Vicki Waiting Reflection Crystal Ball Annie Christian Chaos and Disorder Rockhard in a Funky Place.

You are SO right about "Resolution"! Fans act like they can't stand that song but I have always loved it--musically, lyrically, the message. Wonderful track. "Here" is most definitely an underrated ballad that is often forgotten but I love how mature and nuanced it is, and the music is so lilting and delicate. Doesn't sound like any other ballad of his to me. I agree with your initial statement that so many of his songs have been underrated...

If I Was Your Girlfriend is my favorite song by anybody. It's a song that can easily be misunderstood. I was 15 when the album came out. At the time the line "would you run to me if somebody hurt you even if that somebody was me" seemed so sentimental. As I got older, I started hearing it as a "head game" pimp kind of line. Plus the groove and the vocal processing stand out to me. If you listen to the sped up lead vocals and the slowed down background vocals, it starts sounding like Gladys Night and The Pips.

Interesting that you mentioned the America horn line from the live video and the Parade Tour. When I saw the Purple Rain tour earlier in 85 (I believe the video of America came out later that same year) they played America as an encore. It was pretty much the same as it is on ATWIAD. Then later he started spreading his wings. He refused to be put in a box.

Love your TOP 10 lists. I always come in thinking about How will you go about it... For instance, my thinking was, for this list you might choose from a Prince album that was not huge commercially; like CHAOS & DISORDER or CRYSTAL BALL. A few came to mind. I'm surprised you didn't put Stare on your list! It's a great song. I also think just about everything on 3121 is underrated and overlooked, but especially fury. I constantly return to listen to that song, and I was surprised to discover that even when he was in his Las Vegas residence, he almost never played that song in his shows. Maybe it's just me? I also constantly listen to lotus flower and mplsound. So many great songs on there. I'm also super partial to Bob George.
