Speaking of evolving as a doll collector, I only collected antique and vintage dolls, specifically old Alexander dolls. I'm in a doll club and most of our members collect the older dolls. However, since watching KZbin doll content presenters, I have fell more in love with the modern dolls such as Tonner (again), Monster High, Barbie, Bratz, and Rainbow High. It's so much fun to buy them in stores and online. They are so accessible! It really surprised me how well made most of them are. I knew Tonner dolls were well made but so are a lot of the modern play line dolls. I know a lot of the members of my doll club thinks I've lost my mind! LOL. My daughter was 4 years old, when i started collecting dolls. She's 23 by now and she still remembers, how very proud she was, beeing my little helper. When she was younger, she "helped" me deboxing the dolls and cuddled them until i secured them on a stand. Later she helped for real, redressing and styling the dolls. We had a lot of fun over the time. Being burried in boxes with doll clothes and accessory together are some of our fondest memories. Today i hold her suggestions about dressing or styling a doll in high regard.

One of my favorite experiences is going to a doll show (no doll shops or antique malls selling doll items around my location) and hunting through the $1.00 boxes for odd shoes, socks, dresses etc. I sew clothes for my dolls so I can judge the sizes pretty well. Then I come home clean and fix them if needed and if it fits one of my various dolls I am thrilled! When I was walking in Grand Central Station with an American Girl shopping bag, a woman looked at the bag, then looked at me and we both smiled and nodded at each other. That was a small but cool experience for me.

I always loved buying older American Girl dolls and restoring them. I learned how to clean, re-wig and restring. It was always so fulfilling to take a doll who had been heavily played with and renew her. Oh the doll clothes and photography - i love that part of the hobby so much.

Shoes! I never realized how obsessed with the doll shoes I'd be! So far my most rewarding fix has been using the zit cream to remove the stains from my tonner dolls legs. I was so nervous to try it and put it off for so long that the staining just seemed to so bad and I figured how could I make it any worse ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but it turned out so great! I no longer have to hide her legs with long clothing or tights! My doll journey...I def started out with Barbies and other 1/6 scale dolls. For years I'd look at tonner dolls and want one so bad but resist because of their scale (they're so much bigger) id always browse longingly on eBay at them. I was afraid that once I bought one id be hooked and have to start my doll collection all over again going from 1/6 scale to 1/4 and I was right. After careful consideration I decided my first tonner doll would be a deja vu and she's still my favorite doll. I fell absolutely in love. I tried to juggle both scales for a while but between money and space I just really love my tonner collection. Mostly out of necessity I've worked on my sewing skills to be able to clothe them and that's been incredibly fun and rewarding. (Shout out to designs by Jude/ Tamara Casey for such wonderful patterns and more recently the very very very helpful videos) I just love this hobby so much.

I collect Schoenhut dolls. Had never considered restoring them until I realized I simply could not afford a mint one. Now the ones I saved and brought back to life are my favorites. I display mine in their own little scenes built into a large bookcase.

Like you, my collection has evolved. Starting 67 years ago with one piece torso/limbs and a moveable headed, early vinyl dolls as a three year old, through so many types in later childhoodon and then towards the fairly large and broad collection I have today. I shared my dolls with around 600 children who passed through my primary school classes, using them as props in literacy and history classes and now share them with my 7 year old granddon. He loves to wash their clothing and use the mini iron to press them. In the last six months he has begun to sew for his own doll and heard and likes to draw up his own designs, usually say too ambitious ones! He is inspired by the videos Michael and David make.

Hi Rachel. This was such a great conversation starter. My doll journey started with baby dolls as a little girl, then I got really into Barbies with my little friend. We would play for hours in the summer on a warm lawn on a blanket with all of our doll stuff spread out all around us. We lived out our adult dreams and created stories. My Raggedy Ann doll was a treasured gift in 1972. I regret giving her away when I downsized. I got back into Barbies when my son was little and we would go to the toy store together. He would get bionicles and leggo and I would get a Barbie so I could play with him and have fun. Now I love many types of dolls but my favourites are antique dolls, fashion dolls and American girls in historical outfits. My grandmother loved dolls and gave her favourite doll to me before she passed. They make me so happy and the best part has been meeting you and everyone here in the virtual doll community. You talked about many of my favorite areas of doll collecting. I do not have a large collection, as I like to interact with my dolls. I have nine dolls, ranging in size from 8 inches to 16 inches that I dress in complementary outfits either with a particular color or style, or centered around a theme. I am fortunate to have a dedicated room to display my dolls and my large dollhouse. When I dress my dolls according to a theme, I have plastic bins filled with items for my dollhouse and to make vignettes. In addition to my dolls and my dollhouse, I have ARI and Caco dolls, Precious Moments dolls, both collections of the Hallmark Doll cards, doll figurines, My Merry/Miss Merry items and many craft items. My best find was at a thrift store where I bought a Georgene Brownie doll for $4.00. She was missing her hat and her shoes, but I had an old Brownie hat that works, and the woman who owns an actual brick and mortar doll shop about 25 miles from me found her a pair of shoes. Whew! Thank you for allowing me to talk about my journey with “dolls”.

The 'learning about different cultures' struck a strong cord with me. When I was a child, I was given an international (9") Mdme Alexander doll for a birthday, and since then through my childhood and teens I would either get another as a birthday gift or purchase one with birthday money. I adored these dolls (and still have most of them, and love them, though most now need to be re-strung). I wasn't really supposed to play with them, so they took on the role of being guardians of 'Deborah Land', and kindly listened to the needs and petitions of my play dolls (mostly Barbies). I also made them tiny accessories to go with their costumes (like jewelry, fans, or what seemed appropriate), and made a small notebook listing the doll's given name (as carefully researched as I could manage then), country, and some interesting customs. Amazingly, after moving around and all the upheavals of adulthood, I still have that little notebook.

I have experienced all 10 topics as a doll collector and I am ready to say it has been one of the greatest experience in my life. If I had to choose the most exciting topic, I must say FASHION! I am not a crafty lady at all but I am very creative in my mind. This brought me to start projects I had in mind with some very talented artists and crafty doll collectors. It is also a very good satisfaction to see your projects come to life, thanks to the cooperation of wonderful artisans and artists. A couple of my own projects then inspired other doll collectors for their own projects and this is priceless to me! All this helped me build up not only cooperations but also new friendships all over the world. Being supportive to artists and crafty collectors has always been one of my main goals. I am so thankful to have this passion since I was a lil child and so thankful I have been able to nurture it as an adult. Wow, I could write a novella about this video! I’ll stick to a few. In the mid 2000’s I fell in love with ball jointed dolls and my kids did too. Starting at 9 & 11 they saved up and bought themselves several BJDs. Their love of dolls has continued to this day. Recently my eldest had a dream where she saw a beautiful doll. She scoured the internet to find the right face sculpt, wig, eyes and body. My youngest is sewing clothes to match the vision. Meanwhile I got a 3D printer and my youngest ( I am so proud of their artistry, I cannot say) has made a half a dozen dolls so far. They print, sand, string, make wigs, make eyes, blush the body, do the face ups, hand make all the clothes and jewelry, honestly they are amazing. I started doll collecting in college when I became interested in sewing and historical costuming. The first doll I bought was an Always Sisters Big Sister doll. She had a body I could pin into and I practiced making clothes in miniature before I made them in human size. I also still have my mom’s Toni doll and MA Little Women Jo doll. Jo has quite a wardrobe, including dresses made from Mary Hoyer patterns (to my delight, she is just the right size). In the late 90’s I started making cloth and multimedia dolls; my kids made dolls alongside me. They learned to sew in preschool and I did all I could to nurture that skill as well as sculpting and other arts. I gravitate towards play line dolls in my collection. I carry my dolls around when I sew for them and they have to be hardy enough to withstand the process. At this point in my life, I prefer to have dolls that have a lot of clothing patterns, so it is easier to sew for them. At the moment I am rerooting a doll to match my vision for her. I am also dabbling in reproduction dolls and I have Bleuette and a 1470 doll by Doug James. Sewing historic patterns for them is so fun! I could literally go on for pages. Dolls and sewing have been such a large and important influence in my life, I could probably tell my life story through the story of my dolls. A friend invited me to go with her to an estate sale. I hadn't been in years. That led to selling on eBay. I began to pick up dolls to sell. (Vintage and Antique). I sold a few doll, but as I noticed how nice of condition to some of the ones I found were in I couldn't sell them. This started my collection and the search for your videos to repair some of them. I’ve been collecting dolls for about 10 years now. Have gone through a lot of changes in the dolls I like. Now love antique papier mache dolls most but still have my vintage Barbie and Sindy dolls. I have a hobby room for my dolls and dolls houses but also have antique teddies and other toys in there now, it’s definitely an evolution in collecting.

One think that I love about Tonner doll fashions is that they are a chance to own beautifully made clothes in wonderful fabrics, that I wouldn't have the funds or places to wear them in real life. And I have a passion for the and/or sweaters. Tamara Casey has done some really wonderful patterns with coats and jackets, so I can create some of my own.

Rachel, I would say that my favorite things are: The Joy of the Unboxing, Connecting Generations, Cultural Journeys, finding unexpected finds in an unexpected place, and Doll Photography😃😃💖💖💖💖💖!!! My Joy of unboxing comes from my Childhood with Birthdays and Christmas and continues today!!! And I would be over the moon if I could find a Volland Doll like your Volland in this video!!! I still have my very well loved Raggedy Andy who is in need of repair badly that my Late Dad bought for me when I was a little girl!!! And I connected with my Late Grandparents through my Grandfather buying me reproductions of antique doll house furniture as a Kid and some collectable Dolls. My Late Grandfather and my Late Dad always loved antiques and I love Dolls as much as real antique houses which means I so LOVED my plastic Kusan 1970s Victorian looking Doll house. However,my reproduction doll house furniture was made of wood, ceramic, and I still have my miniature china tea set!!! And it gave my Late Grandma such joy when I so LOVED my miniature doll house iron stove, which I still have today!!! Unfortunately, when I became 14 years old, I no longer wanted to keep collection Dolls and Doll house furniture even though I saved many Dolls, but my Grandfather insisted on buying me an Effanbee Doll and I still have her today. Then as an Adult after going through health problems of my own as much as my now Late Grandparents, my Mom who is a Cancer Survivor, and my now Late Dad, I realized how much I so LOVE Dolls and wanted Teddy Bears, I wish I had never stopped collecting!!! And the Cultural journeys are so much fun!! The last Cultural Doll I purchased is a Polish Doll that was inspired by my Boyfriend who is half Polish!! She is dressed in traditional period dress and she has red beads. I learned that back in the day, the red beads were made of coral ( I do not know where they got the coral in Poland and my Boyfriend also does not know). Today in Poland the beads are made of wood or plastic, but back in the olden days the Ladies would show off their talents by making jewelry reflecting their financial status and their skill by craving the coral beads to make jewelry that they would wear!!!! And I so LOVE to see people photographs of their dolls!! I have a 1967 Eegee Doll that my Late Grandfather bought for me and she was made before I was born. Unfortunately, although she is very pretty, she has a hole in her head, which I have covered up with a silk scarf. I have never taken her photo, but she would make a conversation piece. My mother started our doll collections when we (me and my sisters)were babies. We each had a box but we weren't allowed to play with those dolls. They just stayed packed in their boxes forever. Now that I'm old, most of those dolls are nearly disintegrated in their boxes, which is a shame because they never got displayed when they were nice. However, my Barbies that I played with as a child got passed down to my baby sister when I joined the navy then when she grew up I got a shoebox of broken parts back and had to restore them to their former glory. I have since saved my children's Barbies as well as rescued Barbies from the thrift stores and rehabbing them. I now purchase them for my granddaughters.

i had dolls all my life. I officially started collecting at 5. Grandma had bought me a porcelain doll. So every Christmas and every birthday i would get at least one doll i could play with and a porcelain doll. I then started to get the doll reader magazines and i fell in love with the lifelike baby dolls so i started to collect those along with my porcelains. I now mostly collect reborn dolls and porcelain dolls. The one bitter sweet thing about most modern porcelain dolls is they have little monetary value. I love to find a doll once priced at about $100 for $10 or less in the thrift store. Sad part is i have so many modern porcelains that when i get a "new" one an "old" one has to go. Usually i can't sell them so i donate them to the thrift store. Now with the reborns to me they are dolls and i know many who think of and treat their reborns as if they are real. That is of no interest to me. I don't really fit in with the reborn community due to seeing the reborns as dolls and not being into role play

I really enjoyed this video. I am an old doll collector--a baby boomer. I had a few dolls growing up but never a barbie. I was crazy about Ginny dolls. They are not mentioned much now. In 1992 i bought my first Madame Alexander doll and fell in love. I have many beautiful ones and they are in pristine condition. I also discovered barbie and had hundreds. I have sold a lot of them having felt barbied out. I now am into Rainbow High and Monster High. I enjoy hearing about doll collecting and used to go to doll shows. There are not many u-tubers i follow since i don't like a lot of brands like Bratz. So glad to find your channel and all the perspectives you talk about. Happy Dollidays.

The joy to discover a real doll compared to the promotional photos. The eyes, complexion, hair... Bought a whole collection of 80s Barbie pink (roses) furnitures. Oh boy, the biggest square box arrived from the Usa. Height was just under my chest! Called a friend, and we happily unboxed this pink dream. With all this I built my Starlight mansion for my Jem dolls! Huge doll house on three shelves! Years ago the big bathroom often turned into a spa. Unless brand new, all dolls and clothes had a bath, so fun! I forgot bows on my Shana, to restore her curls. When I finally removed them, she had the best curls for a loose doll! I collect Jem dolls and Maxie from Hasbro. Have a few Barbie dolls. Have some custom fashions based on the show, so lovely! My favorite is an ice skate outfit for Danse. My health declined and moved. All my dolls are in boxes now. I liked to hunt for clothes. They often ended up among Barbie clothes. Took many photos of my dolls, especially Maxie for my website. Today everything is packed away, and still love dolls and enjoy all your videos.

I love your channel and your enthusiasm! So encouraging! And, Christopher is also fun and brings so much intrigue to the doll table. I love antique dolls, I have a couple, also some American Girl, ( found a Pleasant Company Molly at the Goodwill for only $5!!) I love BJD dolls, of which I have 2, and a Blythe doll along with 3 fake ones...the list goes on. Many , many Barbie's ... I have 3 , 14 inch Betsy McCall's , done by the Tonner company, one of them is signed. I wasn't looking for them but there they were in a thrift store for $4 each! Also I love the Tiny Betsy Mcall and have just ordered my 5th one (in need of TLC ) but for a great deal! I think the one I hope for the most, is an original Bluette along with the clothing patterns (I love to sew) that they used to send out in a magazine. I would love to piece and stitch together those delightful old fashions! I am hoping my two young grand daughters develop a deep interest. They do like coming to see my display, which we call the doll shop!

Yes, a good list. I have a possibly unique experience with "restoration triumphs." I have several Topper Dawn doll line. One problem is that sometimes the plastics chemically melt, especially where different plastics touch. I aquired an Angie, Dawn doll and her legs were fused at the hip. I waited a few years and then decided to cut the fusing away. Success, but since she is prone to refusing, I do monthly physical therapy to her legs to prevent refusing.

I loved this video. Even though I collect 1/6 scale fashion dolls, I related to all 10 of your points. Christopher made some excellent comments that I resonated with. One thing I have experienced is “falling in love” with a doll. Faces either leave me cold, meh, or like. Once in a while I “must” have a doll because I am deeply attracted to the face. It has no logic; it is an affair of the heart. This experiences are so personal and I go for dolls that move me.

But once I found out how glamorous and fun, something like Barbie could be or that they were making modern fantasy dolls I just couldn’t resist. Firstly collected my childhood vintage Velvet & Crissy... then found Wilde Imagination around 2008 I think. First Modern doll collector doll was Evangeline Ghastly "Waiting for Mortimer". Absolutely breathtaking when I opened that box! I couldn't believe her beauty 🤭gasp! First Ellowyne was "Prudence Dressed Me" and the rest is dolly heaven history... Ruby Red, Paula Reina, Pullip, Resin Art dolls, Blythe 😆😂... Unfortunately some have to leave to move this hobby forward. That's the part I hate, but until a lottery win, it becomes necessary 😌... There are so many beauties out there 🤦🏻‍♀😂❤

In my teens, I went through a denial period and choose to not continue to purchase the Barbie dolls that I so admired. I sure missed a lot of wonderful dolls. I had to admit my love when I saw the Tonner dolls. I am hoping to get a Grace doll this convention. She was already sold out when I tried in July.

I was always was attracted to tiny dolls asa little girl. had a tiny Betsy McCall in the50’s that I adored as a child, that I later lost in a move. So I had always wanted another none. And I was thrilled when Robert Tonner wrought her back on the market,and bought several of them. Then many years later found several of the original ones on eBay, that were in outstanding condition. So I have a nice collection of Tiny Betsy McCall dolls. I also love the tiny Kish Riley and her friends, and have several of them.Any I have a collection of Tonner Tiny Kitty dolls. I wish he still made them. I have also a huge collection of Ellowyne, and Deja Vu dolls. The costumes on both are just stunning! I love the period Style costumes on the Deja Vu dolls, that are rare to find styles in the modern world. I sure wish Robert would bring Deja Vu dolls back. Iam thrilled that he is making Ellowyne again, and that was one of the most exciting days in collecting for all of us Ellowyne fans!

I just love dolls! Any kind. Do you know that I had the original Barbie when she came out but went as a hand me down to my younger cousins and ended up irrereparable.😥 My daughter talked me into BJDs and I did end up going a little overboard!🤪 I have Two Billy bookcases with glass doors from IKEA and they work very well. Right now I found Integrity dolls very intriguing and have purchased some. I also recently added a Momoko which is one I’ve wanted for a long time. What can I say - I ABSOLUTELY LOVE DOLLS!!!🥰

I also love finding dolls that represent historical women in particular or characters from my favorite books. I’m blind, so for me, these types of Dolls represents a sort of photograph of what that person or character would have looked like. Also finding new dolls in big giant ballgowns is particularly fun :-) by historical women, I mean dolls that represent actual women’s that lived in breathed. I mostly focused on women, because I like to find out more about women in history and if I’m being honest, they like their outfits better lol

A huge majority of my collection is made up of international Dolls from the countries they represents. It’s one of my absolute favorite parts of collecting is going to an antique store and finding new ethnic or cultural dolls. I have an entire group of dolls that could fit in my mom‘s living room of just Dolls from Africa and just the other day I thrown these precious little wooden Doll that it said were handmade in Germany. For me, if their handmade in their country of origin, that makes them even more special. 12:47
