I have consumed a significant amount of fiction in a variety of mediums, so I can usually smell a betrayal plot coming long before the reveal is made. This game, though...I have never been so blind sided by a story in my life. There wasn't the slightest hint that he was Fontaine right up until the reveal, and to find out how you'd been used just made you feel like you'd never be clean again. BioShock is a master class in writing, and I'm hoping that whatever it is that Levine is playing so close to the chest blows our minds all over again.

In Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic, Bastilla doesn't betray the main character, she was turned to the dark side through various tortures. throughout the fight she will stop fighting to talk, where she will tell you that she just cant control herself anymore and that you should end her life. (if you pick the correct branch of talking and your stats are good enough) You even have a chance to bring her back to your side (light or dark). it's not like she willingly walked away from the group and sold them out.

Thinh Vo You obviously never played the game and have no idea of what I'm talking about. Wheatley's betrayal in Portal 2 is child's play next to this one. There are 3 characters in the original Mafia. You, the main one, and your two best friends who always had your back. Paulie and Sam. In fact, your whole relationship starts with you saving their lives. Sam kills Paulie and tricks you into a trap to kill you as well. And that's the short version, without all the build-up, without all the missions you had to do together, or to save Paulie or Sam along the way. The type of bond that was formed among the three of you where you had each other's back. As I said, Wheatley's betrayal is child play next to this one. Play the game and you'll see what I'm talking about, even tho I just spoiled the last missions for you.

Wheatley's betrayal was very shocking when I played Portal 2 in June. When he started rambling on about how tiny and insignificant I am I realized the whole message. I think that one moral of the game is not to take more power than you can handle. There are people in real life who do stuff like that and they become corrupt and betray a lot of people who trusted them. Is it bad I still like him after all he's done? To be honest, I can't stay mad at him! After all, he did apologize for everything. I think he learned his lesson while stuck in space.

Pavel from Metro was a good one. Matthias from Tomb Raider was boring. Dishonored didnt had a really good story anyway, but the intro was really good. Mossman from Half-Life 2 was good, but she didnt REALLY betrayed you, she just was "brain-washed" by Breen to think she is doing the right thing, but as soon as she realized that she is doing the wrong thing she helped you again. How about Mercer Frey? Lemme tell you bout him. He's the leader of the Thieves Guild in Skyrim, and frames a girl called Karliah for killing Gallus. You go with him to kill Karliah in the Sanctum in Winterhold. When you get to her, she shoots you with an arrow that slows your heart. You see Mercer talking with Karliah, who gets away. Mercer then tries to kill you by stabbing you, and you wake up outside the ruins, with Karliah, who explains that she slowed your heart to keep you from bleeding out.

Betrayals that have the dragonborn in the end the leader of them all. I won't count the companions quest line cuz there was no one that would betray each other. Another good one is from ace combat 5 the unsung war captain Hamilton who brands the war dog flight squadron traitors and only to end up fighting them as they become the razgriz flight

Actually to be fair Bastila only Betrayed you in the game because Darth Malak had pushed her over the edge by torturing her, using his force lightning and persuading her to release her anger and hatred, convincing her to join the darkside, when she tried to stay strong, resisting and rebelling against his ways. That's the premise of why she's Number 7.

Jabriel Thomas I wasn't remotely surprised by anything that happened in the entirety of the MW series. It had B-movie written all over it. And 343 was the only reason you were able to reach several destinations in Halo CE. Wheatley, MW2 and GTA were all painfully obvious betrayals but that didn't disqualify them. Predictability clearly doesn't matter here.

Portal 2 is, for me, the number 1. It was such a slap in the face that Wealthey is actually the bad guy and GLaDOS, kind of bad but she is your ally. When I first finished Portal 1 in 2H30, I realized how short the games were, so when I arrived to the boss GLaDOS, I thought it was it, that I won. But, it turns out that no, I still had to complete more than half of the game to win. Wealthey betraying you was, to me, the wrost. All your friendship that you built with him was gone, and I was chocked when it happened...

I found the betrayal of Terrence Higgins (voiced by Mickey Rourke) in True Crime: New York City quite shocking. Though he was shown only briefly at the start of the game before his "death", he was a great father figure and mentor. To find him alive and the manipulative head behind the gangs was surprising for me back then.

He knew from the start that he couldn't let him back in, that it was a one-way ticket. It was for the survival of the vault, and his options were quite limited, sure. But he pulled the wool over The Vault Dwellers eyes, and as we learn as soon as he steps outside the door, The Vault Dweller was not the first sent on that suicide mission.
