ronskie donskie Totally agree. I still don't understand the logic of his severe punishment. I loved the way Charlie Hustle played all out, and what he did on his own time with his own money as a non-player (well, he did player/manage for a time) should have nothing to do with his records. I was also shocked when the NCAA chose to void Penn State's wins for the Sandusky scandal and deprive Paterno of his record. Ironically, the very week I post this, they decided to give Paterno (now deceased) his wins back for the record books (after a mere 60 million dollar bribe). It made no sense to 'punish' the players for all those years by the actions of a team administrator.

People need to realize that PED's are more popular in cycling than they are in other sports, excluding bodybuilding. Majority of the bikers are on some type of gear to increase their endurance, so it's not like lance had an extreme advantage. To overcome cancer and still win that many tour de france is just incredible. I don't care if people want to hate on the dude, he accomplished something that not many people will ever do.
@dorfus7110 жыл бұрын
Except baseball too apparently. I still think it is a misconception that the majority of pro cyclists dope, it is just that cycling has become the most highly tested and tries to be the most transparent sport. Certainly there have been numerous doping scandals and cyclists have used everything imaginable and more to increase their performance and endurance. You do realize that drinking too much coffee, taking prescribed asthma medication and taking most otc meds for a cold will get you a ban in cycling right? I look forward to the day when this great sport is truly clean and I think this day must come soon for it to survive. To say that Lance did not have an extreme advantage makes me wonder how much racing you actually watched. He may have hid it well, but it was very rare for him not to have an "extra gear" that he only used if he absolutely needed it.

What most people fail to understand about Rose betting on his team is that it altered the way he managed. Let's say that he had money bet on a Saturday game. On Friday, he uses his pitcher more innings then he should in order to save his bullpen for Saturday's game. Let's say that he rests his best players on Friday so they will be fully rested on Saturday. Since he doesn't have money bet on Friday's game, he doesn't care if the team loses on Friday. Do you understand? Betting on your team drastically can change the way you run the team regardless of whether you bet on them to win. It alters the integrity of the game.

Dating back to 1919, ALL MLB clubhouses have a sign posted. It's clearly placed and clearly worded. Umpires, Managers or league officials will be banned for life for betting any sum toward any decision on a major league baseball game. All the excuses in the world, and all the disagreement with the rule doesn't change the fact that he knew the consequences and did it anyway. I call it dumb before I call it cheating. But either way, his punishment was the only correct one. It's just that clear.
@Rawk4Life10 жыл бұрын
***** Actually, it is a form of cheating. When a highly paid baseball player takes some of the money guaranteed to him in his contract, and uses it to gamble at any sport as a means to increase his yearly salary, he's able to illegally claim that he made more money than the rest of his own team. If his gambling wasn't considered cheating, Pete Rose might have been re-considered for the MLB Hall of Fame. As a professional athlete, said individual is required to not do particular rituals until he officially resigns from the sport he's participating in. Otherwise, he's no different than the technical cheaters in the same sport.
@Jabhill2610 жыл бұрын
Rawk4Life Rawk, how far did you have to stretch that rubber band to get it to fit over your definition of cheating? Your explanation makes no sense at all. To say that he took money from his paycheck and gambled with it is a form of cheating, makes anyone that ever gambled, a cheater.

I wondered about Rose being on the list, also. Rule breaking is not always synonymous with cheating. For example, there is an NBA rule which says all shoes worn on the court must have some of the color white in them. If a guy wears a solid red shoe, has has broken a rule, but not cheated to affect the outcome of the game.

Pete Rose shouldn't be on here. His 'cheating' never boosted his stats. He bet on games he played, and sometimes bet against his own team (why people don't like it), but he still holds the hit record while supposedly tanking to help his bets.
@bedsareuseful11 жыл бұрын
You can't bet against your own team because there's a conflict of interest - your interest in your team winning conflicts with your interest in your bet winning. There would be a financial temptation to play badly. Thus the integrity of the sport would be compromised. Thousands of people paying to see the best the sport has to offer and what do they get? Some men acting - pretending to play well but really they aren't even trying.

npa312 Well, the only real assurance we have that he never bet against his own team is Pete Rose's word. And this is the same Pete Rose that DENIED he ever bet on baseball for years and years and years until he wanted to make some cash and sell a book. Then he came clean. So basically, his word is worth shit. I do doubt the man's ultra-competitive nature would allow him to bet against his own team, but nobody can be sure about that.

betting on games gets a ban. blatantly obvious drug abuse goes unpunished.
@MalnourishedGoat11 жыл бұрын
lucysixm I agree that everyone who used those performance enhancing drugs should be banned as well, but it will never happen because then MLB would eventually wind up banning half the league. And that would be two black eyes and a kick in the groin for baseball. Instead though, I believe there will be *unofficial* HOF bans for certain performance drug abusing players. I doubt Sosa, Bonds, Mcguire, or A-Rod (possibly Clemens) will receive enough votes to make the HOF. We can only hope and pray of course, but the BBWAA sent a pretty strong message last year when they elected nobody into the HOF, smiting certain players just for playing *during* the steroid era despite never testing positive.

Because of the Black Sox scandal. They just couldn't allow him to get away with it but a life time ban is far to extreme in my opinion since there is no evidence that he fixed games.

Exactly. As long as he wasn't throwing games then he should be fine. There is no way he can purposely win games for the Reds, only lose them. Rose gets such a bad rap though.
@KnickKnack075 жыл бұрын
Doug..because again...as has been discussed literally HUNDREDS OF TIMES (basically in every single article talking about the topic) when you bet on your team for SOME games but not others, who can play differently (and in Rose's case, MANAGE differently) So it is almost as bad as betting AGAINST your team in the games you didn't bet. If he had $1000 on the Reds to win on Wednesday, but not on Tuesday, perhaps Pete Rose the manager would choose to save his bullpen down by 1 run because he'd rather have them fresh for the next game with money on the line. Maybe he decides that Dave Parker REALLY needs a day off on Tuesday to be well rested for Wednesday.

To cheat is to do something unallowed to give yourself an unfair advantage in a competition. What Pete Rose did isn't "cheating" because he wasn't even winning.
@Prymer5511 жыл бұрын
Well I wonder why he wasn't winning. Probably because he was betting AGAINST the team he was managing!! If that doesn't open up the door to foul play I don't know what does! Rule 21 is strictly for preventing such gambling. If they allowed Rose to do that then they would have to rid that rule all together and let everyone do it. Then you could kiss whatever integrity the MLB ever had goodbye. They had to ban Rose, if only to deter others from doing the same.

You don't think gamblers who play the sports they gamble on have any influence on the outcomes of the games they play in AND that their gambling is a complete secret the whole time its occurring and that only THEM and their BOOKIE know and there's some kind of gambler/bookie privilege and that the bookie won't use his knowledge of a professional athlete's "habit" to his own advantage? And that he and anyone ELSE who happens to know can't and won't use that knowledge AGAINST the gambler and use it to blackmail them into FIXING OR THROWING GAMES? Have you ever played a fucking competitive team sport in your life? Apparently not. If you had you'd know how easy it is to be thrown off your game by shit happening off the court or field, how easily it is for someone who just isn't trying quite as hard as they could be to ACCIDENTALLY "lose a game" and how all it takes is ONE PLAYER giving up for just ONE OR TWO plays at the WRONG TIME to "intentionally" lose a game if only because they decided to "make a point" by giving up for one or two plays. Then throw a guy who is a "star player" into the mix, has the world by the short and curlies from all outward appearances and is still fucking around ILLEGALLY GAMBLING (there were no LEGAL SPORTS BOOKS ANYWHERE AT THAT TIME) and jeopardizing not only his own career and future but that of every other player of ANY level of "fame" and "talent" on the team into the mix and you don't think that's FUCKING CHEATING OTHER PLAYERS ON HIS OWN TEAM AND EVERY OTHER TEAM HE PLAYED AGAINST? You're an idiot. Pure and simple. And he got his "lifetime ban" because he fucking QUIT rather than FACE THE MUSIC and say "Yeah. I fucked up and made a lot of mistakes and put a lot of people at risk and I'm sorry for that and I'm sorry I let down my teammates, my fans, baseball and sports fans in general and all the kids out there thinking having your name and picture on a little piece of cardboard makes you some kind of "hero" who can do know wrong.". That's all it would have taken to "make things right" with his FELLOW PLAYERS. THEY are the ones who actually decided to give him the "lifetime ban" that sure as fuck hasn't been much of a "lifetime ban" since he has managed to show up to and get into and get interviewed and seen at a shitload of MLB ballgames and sports talk shows, etc SINCE that "band" was supposedly "Imposed". What was agreed to and probably without "discussion" or "debate" was that none of the guys who were in the majors when he was would ever NOMINATE HIM for the HALL OF FAME. That's where NOMINATIONS for LIVING PLAYERS come from. From their PEERS. Regardless of what kind of bullshit show is made of "fan opinion" and the like. Most "sports fans" of the "hardcore" variety are generally SPORTS FOOLS obsessed with collegiate or professional sports because they either never played competitive team sports themselves or never put in enough time and effort and ambition to do so "successfully". Go find me 100 "sports fans" of the "fantasy league" or "sports talk radio" or "NFL Sunday ticket" variety and I'll show you about 75 "fans" who've never PLAYED the game or sport they "love" and another 15 who were BENCH WARMERS for all of however many games it took for them to decide they were getting shafted and the coach(es) didn't like them because they were better than somebody who WAS playing OR who quit in the first few days or maybe HOURS of their "sports career" when all of a sudden what was GAME and PLAY became a SPORT and HARD WORK. The other ten will have actually taken the field or stepped onto the court and started and finished at least one SEASON and as such is a hell of a lot more of an "expert" on what sports are and what they're really about and what they really mean to the people who really love them and play them BECAUSE they love them REGARDLESS of what that entails than any "stat nerd:" or fantasy league wannabe who can tell you everything about a particular sport EXCEPT what it feels like to got out and give 110% to PLAY IT LIKE SPORTS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYED. If you don't know that letting down your TEAMMATES is the WORST possible SPORTSMANSHIP, then its no surprise you're too clueless to view what Pete Rose did as "cheating". There's an old saying YOU have probably never heard that goes "Winners never cheat and cheaters never win". Pete Rose is fucking proof of that.
@Blood2011Raven11 жыл бұрын
They need to ban all cheaters and come down harder and all of them. Cheaters never earn their victory, which is completely unfair for all other competitors who work their ass off to win.

Loves how the narrator suggests with incredulity that 'a Canadian' beat Carl Lewis, an American. Must be a cheater. On a side note, Donovan Bailey set a record Carl Lewis never bested, so there's that. Mind you, both were really Jamaican, but to employ tonality to suggest a Canadian, or someone from any other country, couldn't beat an American in something, whatever it might be, is ridiculous.

And Donovan Bailey's team also won the relay event over the americans. It's only Johnson that cheated, but honestly, who didn't back then? Steroids were running rampid in the 80s and test were not what they are today. I'm pretty much willing to bet that if Johnson had been an american back then he wouldn't have been tested but he was a canadian so he was. Because I'm willing to bet every participant in that final would've failed that test.

Carl Lewis failed every Team USA drug test during training. He just never failed an international meet test. He crucified Johnson for getting caught.

I watched a game of the Detroit Pistons with Larry Brown coaching. Tim Donahee was a referee that was calling fouls on non-contact plays against the Pistons during the first half. Tim Donaheshe called yet another non-contact foul in the third quarter and called a Pistons player an A HOLE. Larry Brown ran out on the court screaming at Tim Donahee "You can't talk to a player like that." Larry Brown must have said "You can't talk to a player like that" ten to twelve times! i'll never forget that because it was one of the last years that home games were shown over antenna television.

Will McClain i understand that but the fact they got PED users not banned (bonds, A-rod naming a few) and him for just betting on a game and he has a life ban just makes no sense. PED's affects the outcome of a game NOT gambling
@robinmcclain6009 жыл бұрын
I don't think the rules are right, but they are specific about the punishment. I don't think Rose deserves to be banned from baseball, but he did something seriously wrong and at the very least shouldn't be allowed into the Hall of Fame.

How exactly is gambling cheating?
@MrConsequences4u10 жыл бұрын
He could have missed fielding opportunities or struck out more often if, IF, he had been betting on his team to lose. There is no proof he was doing that ever. However, the idea that one man out of nine or eleven in football can overtake a game is stretching it a little. But that is why they ban betting, silly or not?
@LI2Chesapeake10 жыл бұрын
His gambling was from his managing days. Common sense writes he could have struck out more. Gambling was as a manager not player and damn having more hits than anyone in the history of the game without PEDS could have been even better. Wow! Smh
@MrConsequences4u10 жыл бұрын
LI2Chesapeake Maybe I didn't express myself clearly? I do not think Pete Rose threw any game he ever played in or as a manager. I was merely trying to point out to other comments how any one person could TRY to throw a game. His stats and record are evidence he did not throw games. He SHOULD be in the HOF! I also said how it is very unlikely that one player alone could throw a game. Player would have to be in key positions at critical moments and even then he/she can't guarantee the outcome. Too many variables. People who lose money gambling like to perpetuate that games are thrown.
@almostfm10 жыл бұрын
comon sense As a manager, even betting on the Reds to win is a problem, because he's in a position to make calls that might benefit the team today at a higher cost down the road. If he's bet on the Reds to win a game, he's more inclined to do something like keep a pitcher in too long if he's still pitching well. They might win that game because of it, but if the pitcher has been overused, he's a) more likely to get injured (your form is the first thing to go when you're tired), and b) if a guy is worn out in August, he's going to be less effective in his remaining games. Or, suppose both managers have bet on the game, and both bet on their team to win. Manager "A" bets two grand, manager "B" bets five. B goes to A, and offers to cover his loss if team A throws the game. Now A is tempted to make decisions that can cause his team to lose. The #1 rule is "Don't bet on baseball". It's drilled into these guys heads from the time they turn pro. Betting on baseball (especially if your team is involved) threatens the integrity of the game. I don't think he should be in the HOF--it makes it clear to everyone that MLB doesn't dick around when it comes to gambling.
@CarlWatkins10 жыл бұрын
***** No one is saying what he did isn't wrong, stupid, or against the rules. What we're saying is that it wasn't cheating. He wasn't shooting steroids into his ass to hit harder. That's like saying that Dock Ellis cheated when he threw his no hitter while high on LSD. No, it just broke the rules. I think we can all agree that pitching on acid isn't going to help anyone :P
