I think the guitar solos that Kirk Hammett has done on The Black Album all the way to 72 Seasons were inspired but that inspiration leads to repetitive ideas and confused writing. I think it's Kirk wanting to be edgy and technical while maintaining his signature tone, keeping it in the confines of the song, and doing something different. Being inspired to play or create a solo he is always down for. He needs to do a solo none metal album I think. He needs to maybe not do a metal solo project but one inspired by blues and jazz. This could restart the creativity for metal guitar solos. Different ideas that does work in blues or jazz but can translate to metal also. Maybe even add more delay or more distortion even reverb to the over used wah. What does Kirk like to drink? Wahter. When Kirk isn't performing or surfing what does he like to do? He likes to wahlk on the beach. Why did Kirk's wife get mad at him? He wanted to name thier kid Wahlter Wah Wah Wammy Bar Hammett.

I want to make a couuple of points to add to the video. Good video btw. a) Kirk is dissapointed with Metallica, he just lost the passion, but he still has made amazing solos... just outside of the band, like Trinity with Santana, or the song he did with Exodus and his own slo project, the solos in The Maiden and the monster are so good. b) Modern production HURTS whatever Kirk is playing, if you listen anything done by Metallica but with older production is way more listenable. IDK, maybe thats´me been old. c) The more active Kirk is writting music the better he composes with Metallica, case in point: only one solo in the new album has come under suspicion, the rest came as mildly competent. d) THEY NEED BOB ROCK. Or at least a no-nonsense productor that Kick their asses again to put on some work and cut the crap out of their songs.

Not one solo after that era has given me chills or sounded like more than my 14 year old self writing solos after getting a wah and learning the minor pentatonic. Seriously compare lux aeterna to any solo from shy of devils dance and i can almost 100% guarantee it will sound like trash. They can still write good songs and harmonies but the solos take me out of the song experience now like it was an afterthought or out of place. I don't like to come across harsh or as a hater but it's really difficult not to seem like that. I just want to preface by saying, it's not Kirk's fault he has all the fame and success, he just wanted to play music and then he and the band got extremely lucky. However, I just need to say it and it's as simple as this, not one single Kirk Hammet solo is good, literally none of them. You can name any you want, they are all littered with Poorly bent notes, horrible touch and intonation on kirks part, slop, thin whiny tone, regurgitated and cliche blues licks. If you were to ask the "Best" guitarists in the world, the ones who have a phenomenal ear and can hear the smallest errors in anyones playing, Guthrie Govan, Marco Sfogli, Matteo Mancuso, etc. They would all tell you it's intolerable to listen to Kirk's playing. I understand that the average music listener doesn't have a trained ear and can't hear what I'm hearing because it takes many years of playing to develop it. Just understand it's very frustrating to see the level of success he has achieved with his very below average level on guitar. I say this humbly and without suggesting I am the greatest by any means, it's just something that I had to get off my chest.

Yes, "Murder One" is definitely one of the worst Metallica songs, not just because of the solo, obviously, but how bad it's written as a whole - it's an insult to Lemmy rather than a tribute; boring, awful, uninspired, pathetic even. I don't know how they could write awesome songs like, for example, "Disposable Heroes" when they were in their early 20's, and then started to write trash like this in their 50's (there are a lot of shitty songs before "Murder One" from 1996 onward as well, ofc). It's like a painter would paint really good looking paintings in their young age and then started smearing shit on the painting canvas when they get older and call it "art" instead of evolving as an artist and actually care about the quality of their work. I don't get it, I just don't. 🤔

In the realm of Metallica, it sounds fitting. If you're looking for bands with legendary solos that stand out on their own, Megadeth would be a standout choice. Some bands shine through their general formula, while others find success with distinctive approaches, such as sarcastic or noisy solos, which may be more valued than technical virtuosity in certain genres. It's crucial to recognize that each band has its unique identity, where certain elements, even if not technically virtuosic, are irreplaceable and fundamental to their distinctive sound.
