As soon as I heard about this movie, I prayed that Dave Bautista would be cast as Brick. And honestly, I'm not even mad at the casting, but rather leaving characters out and the total fumble of the game's plot. This could easily have been a slamdunk. A violent and gory "Rat-Race"-type movie where various factions are exhausting their resources looking for the fabled Eridian Vault, including the Vault Hunter mercenaries receiving subtle hints and messages from an unknown Guardian Angel, cold opening with them all having a reason to go to Pandora and look for the Vault. Then start with the 'Cage the Elephant - Ain't No Rest For the Wicked' bus scene for the opening credits as an homage to the game. The Vault Hunters selfishly squabble at first in act one but then they come to an understanding and decide to team-up against the corporations for their own fame and glory. Boom, you've got your relatable, anti-capitalism protagonists for the audience to love. Then you put them into dangerous and hilarious situations in act two. The Pandora wildlife seeing them as prey (skags, rakks, spiderants, etc), tribes of Psychos wanting to eat their flesh or make them fight in an arena for sport, and finding the absent-minded Patricia Tannis, who wants to help them find the Vault for science. All while being pursued by the ATLAS corporation's private military, The Crimson Lance. Then comes the climactic third act when "all hope is lost" and they all converge on the Vault where they are forced to open it, only to have the big reveal where (wait for it) the Eridian Vault isn't a cache of ancient alien technology and treasures but a prison built by the Eridians to contain an intergalactic terror known as The Destroyer. It kills dozens and dozens of Psychos and Crimson Lance soldiers mercilessly before the Vault Hunters "Can't let that thing escape" and eventually defeat it. Then in a mid/post credit scene (because every movie needs one nowadays) we see that the Guardian Angel who guided them is actually the daughter of Handsome Jack, who runs the rival corporation Hyperion and orchestrated the whole thing. Boom, set-up for the sequel. With the exception of the Vault Hunters meeting at the beginning (because as player characters they don't actually interact until the second game), that's literally the entire plot of the first Borderlands game. Why is that a difficult script to write?

Adult Animated Film or 2-6 episode mini series straight to streaming would have done Borderlands better. Reaches it's target audience better, voice acting probably commands a smaller fee than oscar winning actress casting, etc. Also, the primary cast should have been Brick, Mordeccai, Lilith, Roland, and Claptrap. He hasn't had a single good one, so why would this be any different? And who wanted all these retirement age actors in the same film? Is that a vanity project of some 90 year old producer?
