I fully admit that this is nostalgia talking, but I do actually enjoy the slow start to Twilight Princess. The village itself is very cozy, I like the side characters, and dear sweet Hylia the Ordan theme is maybe one of my favorite town themes in any game. The moment the video started playing it, I immediately spaced out and was transported back to playing this as an 11 year old. I 120% agree it is way too slow of an opening, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Glad to know someone else feels the same way I do about the opening. Personally, Twilight Princess was my first (and still my favorite) Zelda game, and I had no idea what the franchise was, I just thought the box art looked neat and popped it into my Wii. The opening had me convinced it was gonna be a cozy village life sim game, like Animal Crossing but in a high fantasy setting and with added combat elements. Then King Bulblin showed up and Link went into the Twilight Realm and I got sucker punched with the revelation of what the game really was. At first I got scared and stopped playing for a while (I was seven and easily scared), but after I got back to it and went through the Forest Temple, I was hooked. It’s kinda like how current indie horror games trick you into thinking they’re a completely different genre, except it was unintentional because I was a dumb kid.

On the subject of Majora 3D being dumbed down, the Iwata Asks interview with Aonuma can actually explain it. Aonuma when he remade MM described it as opening up a Pandoras Box of developer memories and found a metric ton of things he saw in the original that made him question what the hell he was even thinking with a lot of ideas, and made it a goal to make a lot of things more clear. Chances are, a majority of these things that changed were appreciated by most people lol

As someone who’s played both versions of Majora’s Mask, I’ll honestly say that I’ve always found the complaints about the 3DS version *way* overblown. The worst part about it is changing the Zora Link swimming, and even then it’s far from bad, but just less fun than in the OG. All giving the bosses weak points does is make them easier (though I’ll admit the Twinmold boss was changed from an easy boss fight to an annoying one), and I never even noticed the change in Deku Link’s physics until others pointed it out either. And even then, these changes are more akin to minor gripes to me instead of glaring issues that ruined the game entirely. Something plenty of people tend to forget about is that how game improved so much from the original, from letting you save at owl statues instead of just quick-save (which wasn’t even an option in the Japanese version), being able to fast-forward the Song of Double-Time at every hour instead of only half a day, and being able to keep track of each sidequest within the bomber’s notebook, along with making it actually useful. All of which makes the game far less cryptic and confusing and more streamlined to play, which’s the best thing to do when introducing it to a modern audience who doesn’t want to be put off from completing the game. Everyone talks about the iffy/bad changes the remake made while always ignoring the good, and if you boil down any remake or of course a game to only its worst aspects while ignoring the good, of course it’ll be bad. The way I see it, instead of having one definitive version of Majora’s Mask like Ocarina of Time does with 3D, we have two good versions that each have their own pros/cons. And again, I love Majora’s Mask (second favorite Zelda game behind Twilight Princess), but I just can’t bring myself to find the remake to be some sacrilegious affront to nature just because of a few changes that don’t matter much in the long-run and are balanced out by better changes as well.

The first time I ever played Ocarina of Time, I didn't get stuck in or frustrated by the Water Temple. The layout (to me) seemed very linear, and I didn't mind having to constantly open the menu for the Iron Boots. So I don't really consider it a bad dungeon. Where I got stuck in my very first playthrough was the Shadow Temple, because I didn't realize you could go back to become child Link again. I just thought the rest of the game was as adult Link. Through a lot of trial and error searching the first room, I finally found the hover boots. And then I spent maybe 3-4 months of about an hour a day after school mapping out each and every room with pen and paper on where I could and couldn't go, while wearing the hover boots. I was able to get through the whole dungeon this way, but of course, you can't actually beat Bongo Bongo without the Lens of Truth, so I was stuck there. After getting frustrated with not being able to fight the dungeon boss after reaching him about 5 times, and dying to him, I finally went online and looked up how you were supposed to fight him, and then learned about the Lens of Truth. So then I looked up how to get that. My mind was blown when I realized you could become child Link again. I've never disliked the Shadow Temple though. I thought (at first) that it was a really cool dungeon idea, making people actually map it out by hand or memory, and since I learned how to do it, the whole concept of it is still great to me, especially with the time travel parts.
@ShadowSora8491 Жыл бұрын
Even without the Lens of Truth, you should still be able to Z-Target onto Bongo Bongo, or even strike him with a spin attack when he charges at you, even if you can't see his main body. I do understand that it feels impossible without the Lens of Truth, especially when you're a kid. I used to think the game was impossible without the Lens of Truth, when I was a kid. It wasn't until recent years that I found out that the Bottom of the Well is technically an optional dungeon, and that the Lens of Truth is technically an optional item, too. I still recommend getting the Lens of Truth, though, since it makes the game a lot easier.

@@d3structi What do you mean by that? The boss makes it very clear that Link's punches are hurting it. Are you talking about the original N64 version?
@rpglover5955 Жыл бұрын
The problem imo is that controlling giant link in MM3D is not as great as in N64 MM. Not only do you drop your sword and shield (which was most of the fun of using the mask), but the option you have to evade attacks is painfully slow, and not at all effective (I remember attempting to dodge certain attacks with the roll, and it didn't feel at all great that Link barely moves anywhere), coupled with that you kinda need to wail on him with a really short range to knock it unconcious (the first half of the fight is basically the same as N64 MM, just that you can't use the giant mask cause it drops after you beat one of them, instead of being an item inside the dungeon beforehand). That being said, Zora swimming requiring magic to even go fast and bosses being made easier (outside of Gyorg, who actually kind of got an upgrade if not for the Zoraform being worse to control) kind of made MM3D a letdown after having played the original N64 one (you could argue being able to control time more effectively with Song of double time being a thematically worse change too since you didn't have full control of how time progressed as part of the world you inhabitated, although mechanically it's better for planning). Being flashy isn't always a great thing in terms of whether a fight against an enemy is good or not (obviously everybody got their own opinions on this, I mostly align with it's less fun because the controlling part of it). It also ended up dragging out the fight more than it was necessary, especially if you wanted to go back for repeat playthroughs (much like the man himself who made this video, my own MM3D copy has not been touched for years)

1.-) MM3D was done like that with a purpose: Accessibility for a short playtime. The 3DS as a whole was never meant to be played for hours, instead you are supossed to play its games in short burts of time. That is why a lot was changed in this remake, so that players could always acomplish something by just playing the game for one hour. 2.-) I will actually defend the Imprisoned: He has a point story-wise, to demonstrate that Demise is trying to free himself in any way possible. Unlike a lot of other villains from other games, he is trying to beat Link and actually win in any way he can, so that makes him good in my opinion.
@skyblailock7248 Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but I actually prefer Majora's Mask 3D over the original. You should read about the development of the original. Most of the changes in the remake were meant to be in the original but they ran out of time. 1. Link swims slower in the original Japanese version Majora's Mask to allow for tighter turns. This was accidentally changed in the later international releases. Swimming faster was originally suppose to use your magic. 2. In the original concept art Odolwa, Goht, Gyorg, and Twinmold had giant eye-shaped weak points. However, the development team was under a very tight schedule and were unable to complete them in time. 3. Each boss was programed by different members of the development team. This is most apparent when comparing the original Odolwa fight next to the other three bosses. Everyone else was significantly easier. 4. Aonuma Eiji wanted symmetry in regards to the bosses. Odolwa was suppose to make the player use the Deku Mask, Goht was suppose to make the player use the Goron Mask, and of course Gyorg the Zorda Mask. 5. Odolwa was never suppose to be hard nor was Gyorg suppose to be so difficult. Traditionally, the first boss within any Zelda game is always the easiest. But unfortunately being under such a tight schedule made things difficult. 6. Now this one is just personal opinion rather than fact but I prefer the new Twinmold fight. You can find everything above by searching for the translated interviews with Aonuma Eiji on Majora's Mask. He was really disappointed with the original and didn't understand why anyone liked it whatsoever.

Weapon durability wasn't an attempt to make BtoW more realistic. It was designed to make sure you use other means (powers and environment) and to push exploration. If you just have weapons that don't break you fill up on good ones and just go. Sure it can drag in the late game, but pushing over one more hill to maybe find a cool weapon to use was great. I don't hat ethe weapon durability system, but it just needs some tweaks.
@iranoutofideasforausernam1703 Жыл бұрын
At least in my case, all it did was discourage anything resembling a traditional approach to combat for the majority of the game, up until I knew where to go to farm Lynels. I would do whatever I could to deal damage using Magnesis and Remote Bomb (especially hot-swapping to dodge cooldown) and just hoarded weapons because basically EVERY weapon felt too good to use. After I learned how unhelpful the majority of the weapons are, I switched to farming Lynels for the best weapons available and ditched the cool and creative stuff, but still made sure to always have a fire sword and an ice sword. In short, I'd say the durability system DIMINISHED the variety of my approach to combat.
@xRetroCritic Жыл бұрын
@@iranoutofideasforausernam1703 Agreed. I avoided combat unless I had to while exploring the game (especially during my master mode playthrough and 2nd normal mode playthrough) and whenever I ran out of weapons, I just ran through hyrule castle with a shock weapon and left with a full inventory of good weapons again. Giving players other options to deal with combat is great, but not when a system like durability actively punishes the player with high opportunity costs that you'll mostly never gain back from killing enemies for worse weapons.

I do not understand why people want to repair BotW weapons. At least in a traditional way (I like the way fuse does it as it feels more like an exploit). Rather than the satisfaction of smashing a weapon over an enemy’s head like a party popper and picking up what it drops to give it another smack down, you’d have to faff about keeping a bunch of half-broken weaponry in your inventory waiting to repair it at some blacksmith only to repeat the hoarding process all over again. Cool weapons are plentiful. The enemies you should use your stronger stuff on are incredibly telegraphed with massive health bars so you aren’t left wondering when you should use them. The UI actively encourages you to treat them as disposable by not telling you their exact durability or stats. I don’t understand people’s issue with this mechanic.

I'm sorry, what? There aren't just "a few" main dungeons in Phantom Hourglass, there are seven. And some of them are really memorable. Don't dismiss the entire game's level design for one bad decision.

The triforce hunt in ww should have happened at the start, and tingle should have only charged link once for every map, then it'd not be as bad. Or better yet, they could have split the parts up between dungeons, while having the means of getting the maps being rewards for side quests like the flower merchant. Also, your ss entry is *on point*. I cannot express my hatred for imprisoned 2 enough, especially after getting the hylean shield
@tyler_keeble Жыл бұрын
Hard disagree on the Triforce quest in Wind Waker. It's the moment when the game finally opens up and forces the player to explore. Sailing from Windfall Island to Dragon Roost Island in the opening of the game and seeing those distant shadows of islands on the horizon begging to be charted and explored only to be cucked by the King of Red Lions who forces you to stay on the linear path... Yeah, its the moment in the game some of us were desperately waiting for! Sure the game teases you by opening up early on, but at that point you're ill equiped to do anything on most of these optional islands. It's not until the Triforce quest section of the game where you've finally obtained all of the items and equipment you need to tackle every island, and boy is it satisfying!

I’ve said for a while, TOTK needs optional dungeon rewards. Imagine voluntarily spending an hour or two in the ‘Earth Temple’ and being rewarded with the completely optional ‘spiked boots’ so you can climb in the rain! That would be immense.

And in some places, waiting out the rain just isn't an option because it's part of that area's challenge. Isn't that right, Zora's Domain AND Thundra Plateau? To be fair in one aspect, Zelda II was, as the numeral implies, the second Zelda game, so the series hadn't really established a tradition at the time. Also, it did have things that some-to-most later entries in the series had that the first game didn't, such as towns. Later games would make them better, of course...

My issue with weapon durability isn't so much its existence: it's the fact that you can't repair broken equipment...it's just *POOF!* gone. I know this is going to be a weird take, but I kinda don't like squirreling away the most powerful weapons in the game just to NEVER use them out of fear I'll never be able to find them again: that's an awful feeling. Give Skyward Sword THAT much credit: that game at least gave you the means with which to repair your shield. Make the weapons break less often, give me the means to repair them or upgrade them to make them more durable or do more damage, but if you're gonna tell me that having an overabundance of weapons is your ideal solution to the wet toilet-paper strength your weapons have, then I don't know what to tell you. >.>

The worst thing about the rain in BOTW is that it's reminiscent of a progression gate from a previous Zelda, but with no purpose. Since this game is "muh freedom" and you can go anywhere at any time, the rain isn't there to stop you from getting into an area you're not supposed to reach yet. And in that game specifically there's no item used to overcome the obstacle. It's literally just there to waste your time and show off how _realistic_ the game's physics are.

The imprisoned is only good for how not to make a reoccurring boss fight. If I had to redo it, I would simply replace the first two boss fights with enemies that you had to fight in waves. It would make the Imprisioned so much more threatening if you didn't kick it's ass three times in the game before the final fight. Makes it feel like bullying at that point. Also the bulgy things on it's hands and feet should be replaced with actual claws. I know they were just trying to scare you with grossness, but popping a zit on the bad guy is the best way to defang any terror it might have.

Just on the subject of rain-climbing in botw (with no totk spoilers) you can always just make a campfire to advance the weather, and with Revali's Gale you can usually get wherever you want anyway. Admittedly its frustrating in the early game, and there are a few instances where (quest reasons) its perma-raining so you need to go around the long way, which get pretty old. (Now with totk spoilers) They 100% fixed this in totk. Even aside from new abilities, you can get Sticky buffs with armour or elixers, and it's WONDERFUL.

Weapon durability in BOTW was not a misguided attempt at realism. They explained it themselves at a conference in late 2017. Weapon durability was designed as a tool to encourage more exploration and to make the rewards from shrines and hidden chests much more satisfying. By forcing your weapon inventory to cycle constantly each new weapon you find in a chest matters more than if it were your 500th Soldiers Broadsword sitting in your inventory. Does it solve that problem? I’d argue it does but unfortunately it added a new problematic element.

Zelda's Adventure at least has a good concept: you play as Zelda. This concept seriously needs to be given another shot, possibly in BOTW3 or in the Zelda movie, where Link is either a secondary character or might get injured or kidnapped, or trapped in time, or dead, and Zelda badasses up to save or avenge him. This way, we can even have a Zelda protagonist talking without having Link himself talk

Alright, I'm gonna defend the nearly 400 rupee price point of the triforce charts, because most zelda games have a rupee cap, and you're gonna be able to reach that cap fairly quick, especially in wind waker if you're getting all the silver rupees laying at the sea floor, so it's actually good that they gave you something to spend your rupees on

One thing about Zelda II. Death Mountain is supposed to take place after the second dungeon. You're not entirely wrong, as the second dungeon is more out of your way than Death Mountain is, but from what I can see when playing through it, it looks like you are supposed to finish the second dungeon first, which would at least make you a bit more powerful when facing it. The issue is that it's much easier to find Death Mountain than the second dungeon. The other thing is The Temple Of The Ocean King. I'd guess Nintendo intended people to use shortcuts that, from what I recall, allow you to skip large parts of the dungeon, but I guess the shortcuts aren't the easiest to find, leading to repetitive playthroughs.

Ok. So one issue with this. Saying death mountain in zelda 2 is between the first 2 dungeons isn't actually accurate. The 2nd dungeon is accessible without the hammer. But the 3rd isn't. However, some players, like myself, often play death mountain to get the hammer early to have early access to a heart container and the downward thrust making the 2nd dungeon easier. But still is not required for it.

this is def unpopular, but i like the rain mechanic in BotW. is it frustrating? hell yeah. annoying? sure. but i like that it forces the player to think, whether that be about alternative methods to getting to their destination, planning for rain ahead of time with stamina foods, or even just doing something else and coming back later. the mechanic is also vital in going to zora's domain, since the player is presented with an actual challenge where they're forced to use paths filled with enemies, instead of just climbing a mountain and paragliding to the domain.

Question for veteran zelda fans: do you find the pacing of gameplay in the earlier 3d games too slow? Botw was my first zelda game, after beating it i started tp but stopped at the second dungeon and i am close to finishing oot. While i enjoy the dungeons ( especially oot), the pacing of the gameplay tears my enjoyment of them. Everything link does is slow, he climbs ledges slow, pushes blocks slow, walks slow making backtracking annoying. And the worst of it, the doors. It feels really nitpicky to say this but i swear opening 10 thousand doors in a shrine and going through the same animation every time just breaks the pace of the game for me. Im enjoying oot a lot, its remarkable how good this 1998 videogame still is today, but i feel like a modernized remake of oot would solve a lot of my pacing issues. But idk, im also really impacient with games in general unfortunately, so i wanted to hear someone elses opinion on the matter.
