The amazing thing about Shanghai metro is that, I have used it for more than 8 years, and I never saw it broke down, not once. I can even use internet on the train. I am currently in Toronto, TTC was the best public transportation in NA for 2017, and yet I see it temporarily shuts down quite often. Also to enter the stations in Shanghai, you would have to go through security check. No one can carry any weapon. And because the glass sliding doors covering, no one can push you off. No kidding, it actually happened here in Toronto so I brought it up.

As a Shanghainese living in Toronto as well, totally agree with your observation. TTC is ridiculous. I don’t want to say this but in China, I guess the head of TTC could have been fired long ago for being so incompetent. BTW, I take Go train a lot. Though it has less delay than TTC, it still has issues time to time, at least more often than metros in Shanghai. Also the fare of Go train is like crazy if you want to compare to the commuting cost in Shanghai.

I believe the Seoul metro represented here is only counting the lines 1-9. Same with Korail metro (number 30 something on the list) However in the greater Seoul area there are about 22 lines overall with a combined length well over 1000km (it’s hard actually to technically distinguish Seoul from the neighboring cities). And the fun thing is it is all accessible with one pass as opposed to some cities where you have to purchase a separate ticket to aboard different systems.

Maybe 22nd century belongs to us but yeah, India is certainly following china"s footsteps by boosting the infrastructure, modernising the railways, building new cities, making small smart cities, making metros in several cities, pushing for more home grown products and companies. Our political syatem is also different. We are still developing developed states but paying less attention to under developed regions. People in those states needs a change, a will to see the change and only government can focus on these things otherwise only west and south india will remain prosperous and will only become more prosperous in future. so, we are catching up but we will be behind china because they have a huge lead, maybe by 10-15 years.

@@AnonymousLibertar1an China and India are two very different countries and the population is about the only similar thing between both. Forget about India, it would be hard for any country to replicate China's double digit growth in future because of certain unique factors to China. Doesn't mean India is stagnating, India is still growing at a very good pace after it liberalised its economy in the early 90s and was very recently the fastest growing major economy in the world. It's just that China grew on steroids during the 2000s and it would be hard for any country to replicate that feat. But not every model can be applicable to all countries, India would fall into a major civil war and probably break up like the Soviet Union if it adopted the Chinese model. India should be allowed to grow at its own pace in it's own model, it's not a race afterall.

Regarding the TBMs XD, China has the one of best TBMs in the world and they are even using it in the cities instead of the mountains.

What? Oh hell no! Hold up, Huh? Oh OK. Compare Nobel prize laureates by country is not fair because Europe and America started way earlier than East Asia and the rest of the world, it is also controversial that the law of the NP has prejudice against East Asians, because the official sets no threshold for White man while demanded East Asians a way higher requirement to win a medal. Meanwhile, White man will still got most of money even though the subject is shared with an East Asian who’s actually more innovative. In Conclusion, it is not fair to compare Noble laureates by country due to controversy and time difference.

The biggest city in my county is trying to build about 3.5 km of it's very first underground . Taking about 10 years , spending 3 billion dollars( us dollar equivalent ) .This was meant to be completed 4 years ago (still half finished on 2020) . Being able to make a 4 mile tunnel is way outside the abilities of Auckland New Zealand.

I love the Shanghai Metro. Delhi’s is good. Dubai’s is fun (driverless!). Tokyo’s is too big and confusing. London’s rocks. Madrid’s and Barcelona’s are drab. Cairo’s is the scariest. Washington, DC’s is the most savvily designed. Moscow’s is intriguing. New York’s has the most character. But Paris’ is still my favorite.

I am surprised to see Chengdu, China on there I spent a few months there back in 2006 and I don't remember there being a metro system there. They needed one for sure but I only ever took taxi's and biked and walked. It is amazing what a small (for Chinese standards) city can do when they want to get it done! They are number 15 with 226 Km now!

This is only in reference to the projects which are under construction and have been approved. There are several lines which are proposed, once they get approved, this will add another 100-150 km. Besides, Mumbai also have local trains which have a system length of 427.5 km. Delhi Metro is also getting expanded, So, It will climb the chart even higher in time...

China has the capital, technology, equipment, labor force and building materials industry needed for the construction of subway. If China attaches importance to the subway length ranking, at least 50 cities in China could make it into the top100. China has pushed hard for other infrastructure projects, but it has held back on building subways because the subway is too expensive to build. Building subways and adding subway lines in Chinese cities requires the review and approval of the central government. At present, certain conditions must be met. 1. The population of downtown area is more than 3 million. 2. One-way peak passenger flow is more than 30,000 people per hour. 3. GDP must reach a certain scale. This has led many third-tier cities to abandon subway construction for the time being, even if the cities are relatively rich and the population is not enough, the country will not approve subway construction

One line of the subway of Bejing is actually a tramway line. 55% of the London underground is at the surface, and looks like a surburban train. It's difficult to compare systems which have so different acceptations all around the earth.

Exactly. This also does not start to take account of London's overland metro system that dives underground too in central parts on some lines. London would be 250 miles for the tube but 1,600 miles or more for the overland metro covering the urbanised land mass. In fact, if the urbanised landmass was measured the same as in Chinese cities or American cities, then London's continuous urbanised landmass would be served by over 2,000 miles of metro!! - The only city with more (and measured in the same way) is Tokyo. London will never be caught by any Chinese city even up to 2050 at least.
