I love Vandal Hearts 1 and 2. Vandalier class from 1 has to be the most OP of any strategy RPG Ive ever played.

So it comes out... David admits he doesn't like Disgaea. I can see that if you've only tried playing the first one. It has a lot of flaws that were fixed in later entries. You should really give Disgaea 4 or 5 a chance if you haven't played them. Both of them can be completed without any grinding (Not counting post game, as is standard for most JRPGs). Well, I'm glad you liked La Pucelle Tactics! I was pleasantly surprised to see it mentioned on one of your lists as I've never heard you mention the Disgaea series in any previous videos :) It's a hidden gem, for sure! I cannot recommend Earthbound enough. It's one of my go to's when I'm stuck home with the flu. I've been playing it's sequel Mother 3 during my downtime on my NVIDIA Shield. Thank god for fan translations.

Vandal Hearts deserves recognition just for having the most ludicrously broken special class ever. I mean, it’s hard to get without a guide and you only get it for the last few battles, but Vandalier was still just ridiculous.

I just finished a short yet pretty enjoyable adventure RPG on the SNES: The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang. It has an overhead view plus a leveling up system and cute sprites. I enjoy the quick reviews. I always hear about games I wouldn’t otherwise find.

I can't believe you haven't played Kingdom Hearts past the first one! You should really give it another shot. I don't usually like ARPGs either, but the combat is easy and fun, and the various worlds and music are done beautifully. I can't speak for KH3 or the weird spin-offs, but KH2 at least is a fantastic game and an absolute must-play imo.

Vandal Hearts is so freaking good. I loved it when I was a kid and love it now. The class changing options are so good and add a great bit of strategy in how different each class option can be for every character. The second one was terrible though sadly.

How did you finish FF4 in 18 hours? I’m playing the DS version right now. The enemy encounter rates are rather high and some of these boss fights are fairly difficult. What was your secret in breezing though that one so quickly?

NA SNES version is easiest by far. PS1 version Zeromus is a nightmare since you can't use white or Bahaumut without shooting yourself in the foot.

La Pucelle was unreal. Ive never actually met someone else that played it though lol. Also, I can confirm that FF4 can be beaten in less than 20hrs. Back in high school I beat it in 2 sittings. It was a challenge but I wanted to say that I was able to pull it off.

I’ve played and beaten this game and can vouch that it can be done in about 20 hours, but if you want to really get into it and just enjoy all of the weirdness and funny aspects of the game, it will take closer to the 50 hour mark, but it is such a silly game it’s almost worth the time.

It depends on the pace you go through games, the average on How Long to Beat is 28, it took me 24 Tbh even if you go through games slowly it would still probably be under 40

Actually, Atelier is still making games, they're just a lot different than the Iris series. They put out a game every year. Ryza was the latest.

Ah you are the first person I have ever encountered who doesn't like Disgeae. Fascinating. Oh yeah Golden Sun is just not talked about enough. My favorite Star Ocean game in the whole series is The Second Story. You mentioned Castlevania Sympathy of The Night but I consider it's true and best successor to be Aria of Sorrow. Now as for me one of the shortest Action RPG that I've ever played is Megaman Legends.

I just wanted to throw out there: Star Ocean First Departure R is also on Nintendo Switch! It's a fantastic game to have on the handheld, too! It's hard for me to recommend any short RPGs, because somehow I always end up spending way too long on games before I beat them. xD But I'm one of those people who likes to find every treasure box and fill out the beastiary and all, so it's my own fault

Kingdom Hearts 2 cuts out most of the platforming, and the combos make you feel like a god in the mid/late game. Please do check it out if those are the 2 things keeping you from the KH series.

I tried the Kingdom Hearts 3 demo a few months ago. I didn't notice much in the way of platforming, but I did quit after about 30 minutes because it was 2 minutes of gameplay followed by a long cutscene, 2 minutes of gameplay etc

I actually just beat the PS3 version of Kingdom Hearts. I finished it in about 22 hours. While it's been quite a while since I played the PS2 version, I remember it being far more difficult. I know I lost to Chernabog probably 30 times before I beat him, yet this time I beat him in a minute the first try. Also, I recall KH2 being easier than #1 when I first played them, so I'm curious how easy #2 will be for me now. Also, I might've found some more for your party members better than the lead character lists. Before Kingdom Hearts, I beat Akiba's Beat. Asahi is probably ranked around the middle of the characters. Saki and Reiji both outclass him by far. It's not even close.

I tried playing final fantasy 4 on the ds years ago but the dungeon (the moon) was just too difficult for me especially the dragons and I couldn't be bothered grinding so I gave up. I might play it on the psp as I have heard that one isn't as grinder heavy.

It'll still require some grinding but the PSP version is just straight up better than the DS version. The voice acting and chibi designs just bastardize FF4 terribly. Also, every monster in the last part of the game have simple weaknesses. Stone/piggy/frog works on humanoid enemies, don't use magic on the big robot things or else they'll counter with a heavy attack, the dragons have a major weakness to their anti-element (if they're fire, use ice. Vice versa). Behemoths, only use physical attacks or else they'll use meteor. So cast haste and berserk on Cecil and edge and let them go at it.

I'm really surprised about Atelier Iris. I own the game and I've never gotten close to completing it in less than 20 hours. The HowLongToBeat web site even lists the average full story at 29 hours.

A lot of good games on this list. I'm happy to see the likes of Symphony of the Night and a Fire Emblem, personally! If I have any "issues" with the list, it's with the length of the games. I'm not sure how easy it is to beat Dragon Quest V in 20 hours or less, for example (took me about 30 hours for my first playthrough), and perhaps the same could be said for some of these other games. However, I don't think it's a big deal if someone ends up spending like 25 hours playing a great game.

got something to say about Fire Emblem permadeath. people really need to stop taking it so seriously. even Shouzou Kaga, the creator of Fire Emblem, said that. there is never any requirement to beat these games with every character alive. especially in this day and age where you can look up each character's endings and supports online. these are fictional characters, when they die no actual person die, they'll always come back when you start a new game after beating it. now i'm not trying to condemn anyone for playing on casual mode, i even have some actual criticism of permadeath. but people really need to stop taking it so seriously. these are just games and no actual people die from this mechanic.

The other "Metroidvania" Castlevania are also great and short, theres 3 on GBA and another 3 on DS. The GBA titles got ported to current consoles in the Castlevania Advance Collection but the DS ones are still only for DS. I recomend them all except maybe the second on GBA (Harmony of Dissonance) and the first on DS (Down of Sorrow) as I don't like them as much but that's subjective and you can find fans of all of them. There's also another on 3DS but tha one is a sequel or prequel of Castlevania Lords of Shadows and is quite different in everything (but I haven't played it beyond the demo on the 3DS eShop). Bloodstained Ritual of the Night (the 3D Bloodstained) is an spiritual succesor made by the same director of the PS/GBA(except the first one)/DS Castlevanias, in my oppinion it's not as good as most of the series but it's still good, it's available in current consoles, PC and I belive also on cellphones. Don't know how well it runs on cellphones but I can say for experience that the Switch port in not good so maybe it's better to get it elsewhere.

Could you do a video going through the SaGa franchise? I have no idea how many title their are or how they are included. I tried SaGa Frontier as a kid and it was one of the hardest games I've ever played. Some characters like Red were really easy and then Blue was extremely hard. It would be a good franchise to do a history lesson on.

since you mention ALL platforms for other games, I'd like to point out that Symphony of the Night is also on Xbox 360 ( and backward compatible on Xbox One, as well as the upcoming Series X ), PS3, and PS4 ( via a digital only combo with Rondo of Blood ) I love the Disgaea series, as well as Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom. Each Disgaea sequel improved on it's predecessors, and for me it's worth it for the hilarious characters & story ( I seriously want Laharl in Smash Bros...and kind of want Etna as an Assist Trophy where she does Prinny Raid ) and am I the only one who enjoyed Dark Dawn? I mean the only significant negative to it is the points of no return, everything else is almost as great as the GBA games. I'm still hoping Nintendo & Camelot finally wise up & make a 4th game, at least to wrap up the story. I can live with only getting 4 games in the franchise, as long as it has an actual ENDING. Damn cliffhangers... also want to throw out mentions for Super Mario RPG, Mother 3, Paper Mario, RoboTrek, Fossil Fighters and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow ( if you like SotN, you'll love AoS. The soul collecting aspect offers up so many fun weapon & spell combos to experiment with )

1: Oh man, I remember renting that game. This one is a riot, and I'd love for them to release an HD collection of the 3 games. 2: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh God, that is a game you have to play with a guide if you don't want your party members to randomly die off permanently. Also on easy, because FUCK the injury system. Beat it though, you use a guide and play on easy, it's a fun time. 3: I still haven't so much as watched an LP of this one, though I did back Bloodstained (To Spite Konami.). Good gameplay. 4: Ah Diablo, a good old classic. Too bad Activision Blizzard did the bad thing. 5: I love games where you play a character who can recruit monsters and also fight alongside them. 6: I mean........what's there for me to add or say? 7: This game makes me think a Turn Based RPG based around Evolution/Mutation/Both would be neat, especially if you had full control. 8: The Final Fantasy game that killed a party member before 7 and no one talks about that fact. 9: "We didn't localize it because the West didn't care for Shadow Dragon." 10: "Hey, do you like that Disney Show 'Gargoyles'? This is the closest your getting to a game for that." 11: Fantastic series, complete with Camelot's cool art style and imagination (That Tony Taka has bastardized when he took over Shining series.). 12: The series where you have to play them all to understand the plot. Yes even the mobile games, cause fuck you. 13: I wish they'd bring this series back already. I think it's the same setting as Rhapsody funnily enough. Such a fun game. 14: Star Ocean is what got me started in the genre (The original PS1 version of 2.), granted it was Suikoden that cemented my love for the genre (Ironically, given how few in the genre are truly like it. That one Kickstarter has me EXTREMELY excited, didn't think I'd ever get another one. Also Obligatory #FucKonami .). A shame 4 and 5 threw out alot of what made the series cool (Like Optional Party Members.). 15: First game is great. Do not play the 2nd one. I don't know about the 3rd one.

actually, there is a Gargoyles video game. It was unfortunately exclusive to the Genesis ( as was Pocahontas...that was such a fun game ). and yeah, it sucks that Nintendo didn't localize New Mystery of the Emblem...especially given it's introduction of the casual mode it would likely have done better than Shadow Dragon just by marketing that feature at the forefront.

It sounds like you only played Disgaea 1 or 2; they are the least forgiving and require the most effort to be high enough level (i.e. requiring grind). starting with 3 and going to most modern they kept being made easier and requiring less grind. If it was the story lines then I ask do you like anime? If you do then try each game again. 3=twist on school themed anime. where morality is flipped so the students that ignore teachers and are the class clowns are ranked higher than the studious book nerd types. It begs the question of "what defines a hero as not being a villain". D2= This is a weird continuation of 1but does not require playing the first to get things. I love the final chapters that delve into Etnas past as a child. I love Laharls relative that shows up and I like how comically wrong Laharl is when a curse turns him into a girl. May be offensive, I would not know; I am not offended but I am not you. 4=has a journey of political activism with a comedic edge and rather than st op becoming Netherworld President you continue beyond scaling until you are saving the universe... all because the MC is OCD about every single promise regardless of how dumb it was of a promise. 5=Saving the multiverse/Galaxy from a power mad tyranical A***ol*. The MC failed to save it in the past then gets tied to the current rebelion. He is the Rough and Rugged strong quirky silent type (edge lord), with a heart of gold. I like the companions of this game a lot and they are somewhat more diverse than the other games. Each game in the franchise can theoridically be finished in around or under 20 hours for the main stories. I am not that kind of player, but forced Item world aside every other mission map can be finished in 10 min or less so if you are good at these games and think quickly. Laharl and Adel were the worst Protags to me.
