Awesome. I don't know why JRPGs insist on being so long when 20 hours can still be an amazing adventure.

Haha, I hear you, a few of the games David mentioned being able to beat in under 20 hours and I'm here going "Geez man, did you speedrun through them?" Some games can be beaten that quickly but are better if you take a little more time to really explore the game and what it offers.

My oldest son is 5y and I read for him every single day. Sometimes I choose a game my kids may enjoy watching me playing instead of watching cartoons. Chrono Trigger, for example: I read everything aloud and make voices and let my son run about the places and even grind a bit by pressing X as he runs into regular battles. Simple and fast RPGs can so become bedtime stories, 1 hour each night, and gaming becomes quality time for parent and child. And then there's the pride of having my little kid recognize CT music and talk about the story and characters!

Yes, a list that speaks to me! As much as I'd love to play RPGs like Persona 5, I look at that 100+ hr playtime and loooong intro and just can't find the heart to start. These RPGs listed are great, and I can't believe that Chrono Trigger was actually so short all along when it felt so long! Maybe all the secrets and endings throw me off, and how it's just paced so well so that there's no filler. I'd throw Vagrant Story in as my recommendation for a great short RPG, though I understand it's pushing the time limit slightly, being about 24 hours on average. Looking forward to the action RPG list!

TheWhiteFang284 honestly I loved the entire game because unlike most jrpgs , it’s set in modern day society . Also a lot of people can relate to most of the characters ,the leveling up personal relationships with the supporting cast and main cast ,the gameplay (I just didn’t like that there’s a time limit to maxed out all the confidants), and the music is 🔥🔥

Damien Knox yes that was an annoying part in the game especially when you finished a palace within the first 2-5 days . But I guess that’s the reason why they had the confidants and Calendar to keep the player engage by using time management

It is a great JRPG. I see the flaws that it has, but criticisms have more to do with the fans who love the previous entries so much that they wanted a different game rather than whether it was a good game or not. It happens quite often when it comes to JRPGs.

Golden Sun for the gba was a classic that took about 15-20 hours to beat. I remember plying it while in the lobby of the hospital while my grandparents were going through their doc checkups. You see, they were slowly passing away both were in the late 90s, and with each doctor visit, the circle of life only became more evident. I was a teenager at the time, and Golden Sun was a great distraction for me at such a stressful state. Now I am married, kids, job etc, and all the stresses that come long with the average working class life. The simple mobile RPGs like Golden Sun still serve as a nice mental oasis when life gets a little overwhelming. Gotta give a lot of credit for this video man. Didn't find anything that suits me, but the video itself is just the perfectly designed top ten list. Having the timecodes in the comments was huge, and you saying on which platforms the game released directly after the title of the game is also just so useful. I could skip through the whole list, see if I owned the right platform and just continue directly to the next title if not. Atelier Iris 2 has a special place in my JRPG heart. I bought when i was in high school in mid 2000s and made it to final boss but couldnt beat it. So i lend it to a friend, they eventually left to another school but tried to give my game back. Unfortunately I was absent that day so i missed the chance to get it back. A decade later I tell my then boyfriend at the time, this story. So one Valentine's Day we see this game at a gamestop, he instantly gets it for me 💜. I still had my PS2 and memory card many years later, loaded my old file, and cheesed the final boss whoring OP alchemy items to beat it being wiser JRPGamer since then. I still have the 2nd copy my former boyfriend got me and its sentimental value has skyrocketed since then. If ya made this far, thanks for reading :D

Even so i dont always have the time to play such long games in a few settings. What i just love is the Standby Feature of the PSP, Vita and Switch. You can turn those systems off whenever you want and continue it right there. Even like in the middle of a battle. Sure you can close the DS and 3DS as well to trigger the Standby, but the Battery will drain faster than the other Systems will. Back when i still went to school, i had to travel by Train and Bus. There i used the PSP and DS a lot. And no matter where i was, i could always turn off the System and there was no need to find a Save Spot.

@@LeoRex13 I remember it was released around the same time as Xenoblade Chronicles - I ordered the special edition for both. Had really cool concept art books for both. I believe it had even more of a limited release than XC. I've never seen it mentioned anywhere. Would love to see it ported to Switch to see it brought to more people I think it would be pretty successful.

theguybrarian yeah I got all into the OP Rainfall thing back when , ended up liking Xenoblade significantly less than the other two... maybe I’m the outlier here? Pandoras tower I think was the third game. You try that one?

@@LeoRex13 I did buy Pandora's as well. Love it but I couldn't get into the motion controls (killed Skyward Sword for me as well). I think I beat the first dungeon but that is def another top tier Wii game that didn't get it's moment.

Oh shit, This is a god send for me. I've been following your series trying to find suggestions, but because of work and crap, I keep sorta... spacing out on my adventure. My latest attempt was Dragon Quest VII on 3DS which actually somewhat works despite how insanely long it is. Since it's all divided up in different smaller stories for each island, it's pretty easy to knock out an island in a night or so and continue on at your leisure. I'm actually enjoying it more than I did when I played it a few years ago and got burned out. And it's super high quality, becoming one of my favorite JRPGs ever.

The only 2 games on this list I haven't played were the PSP duel story RPG and that alchemist crafting one you said at the beginning. And length or no, all of these are some of the best games I've ever played. Dragon Quarter is my favorite PS2 game. SaGa 2 is my favorite Gameboy game. Chrono Trigger is the best JRPG ever made. Ect. I think the Definitive edition of Xenoblade Chronicles for the Nintendo Switch is quicker than the original. I swear I remember it took me a long while to get to Eryth Sea back then, whereas now, getting things done has never been better: - Picking Ether crystals has no delay - Opening chests also has no delay - It's very easy to track named NPCs - Main and Side quest objectives have pathfinding mmarkers on the map - During collection quest, some item orbs will show quest markers always standing the item you require - Even the quest markers give you a general location of where some of monsters or items actually spawn - the menus are much quicker and more streamlined - Reduced loadtimes - Autorunning while going through long stretches of land or water gives you some time to do anything minor which is a plus for me And so much more quality of life improvments, it's too unbelievable for me! And since it's portable, I think it's really good game to play when you have no time to sink in a lot of game time. I wholeheartedly recommend it

I considered Popolocrois, but I didn’t add it in because there are some places where you can get lost, and because I enjoyed the world so much it took me like 50 hours to do everything. I was just spending so much time exploring every nook and cranny.

Great vid David. 25 hours is the sweetspot for me in a great rpg length these days. I can't wait to try Hexyz Force, and I think you've convinced me to give Dragon Quarter a try after all these years. Tbe one I'd recommend is Dragon Ball Z: attack of the Saiyans for the DS. Especially since us adult grew up with Dragon Ball Z, so it's a fun way to re-live the story.
