My oldest son is 5y and I read for him every single day. Sometimes I choose a game my kids may enjoy watching me playing instead of watching cartoons. Chrono Trigger, for example: I read everything aloud and make voices and let my son run about the places and even grind a bit by pressing X as he runs into regular battles. Simple and fast RPGs can so become bedtime stories, 1 hour each night, and gaming becomes quality time for parent and child. And then there's the pride of having my little kid recognize CT music and talk about the story and characters!

Yes, a list that speaks to me! As much as I'd love to play RPGs like Persona 5, I look at that 100+ hr playtime and loooong intro and just can't find the heart to start. These RPGs listed are great, and I can't believe that Chrono Trigger was actually so short all along when it felt so long! Maybe all the secrets and endings throw me off, and how it's just paced so well so that there's no filler. I'd throw Vagrant Story in as my recommendation for a great short RPG, though I understand it's pushing the time limit slightly, being about 24 hours on average. Looking forward to the action RPG list!

TheWhiteFang284 honestly I loved the entire game because unlike most jrpgs , it’s set in modern day society . Golden Sun for the gba was a classic that took about 15-20 hours to beat. I remember plying it while in the lobby of the hospital while my grandparents were going through their doc checkups. I was a teenager at the time, and Golden Sun was a great distraction for me at such a stressful state. Even so i dont always have the time to play such long games in a few settings. What i just love is the Standby Feature of the PSP, Vita and Switch. You can turn those systems off whenever you want and continue it right there. Even like in the middle of a battle. Sure you can close the DS and 3DS as well to trigger the Standby, but the Battery will drain faster than the other Systems will. Back when i still went to school, i had to travel by Train and Bus. There i used the PSP and DS a lot. And no matter where i was, i could always turn off the System and there was no need to find a Save Spot.

I think the Definitive edition of Xenoblade Chronicles for the Nintendo Switch is quicker than the original. I swear I remember it took me a long while to get to Eryth Sea back then, whereas now, getting things done has never been better: - Picking Ether crystals has no delay - Opening chests also has no delay - It's very easy to track named NPCs - Main and Side quest objectives have pathfinding mmarkers on the map - During collection quest, some item orbs will show quest markers always standing the item you require - Even the quest markers give you a general location of where some of monsters or items actually spawn - the menus are much quicker and more streamlined - Reduced loadtimes - Autorunning while going through long stretches of land or water gives you some time to do anything minor which is a plus for me And so much more quality of life improvments, it's too unbelievable for me! And since it's portable, I think it's really good game to play when you have no time to sink in a lot of game time. I wholeheartedly recommend it

So many quality games on your list. Very cool to see Sword of Hope listed. Phantasy Star 4 is amazing also. I remember getting stuck on DW2 so many times and restarting it thinking I missed something or skipped something... man that was frustrating.

Loved taking a weekend to beat both Suikoden 1 & 2. My all time favourite JRPG series.

Hexyz Force is relatively short, but I loved that game so much that I played it multiple times. I estimate I have about 100 hours of save files. That is because there are five endings that you can get.

Amazing list and huge thank you for doing this :). While the older fair is your shtick here, any chance you can update or do a second video on this for say the PS3 and PS4 console's? Just asking as would be nice to be able to acquire some on the more modern console's. We thank you either way :) was a very fun watch here.

One of my favs is Secret of Mana. If you do just the main story it only takes a little over 20 hours! I also agree that Super Mario RPG is by far the best mario RPG

Atelier Iris 2 has a special place in my JRPG heart. I bought when i was in high school in mid 2000s and made it to final boss but couldnt beat it. So i lend it to a friend, they eventually left to another school but tried to give my game back. Unfortunately I was absent that day so i missed the chance to get it back. A decade later I tell my then boyfriend at the time, this story. So one Valentine's Day we see this game at a gamestop, he instantly gets it for me 💜. I still had my PS2 and memory card many years later, loaded my old file, and cheesed the final boss whoring OP alchemy items to beat it being wiser JRPGamer since then. I still have the 2nd copy my former boyfriend got me and its sentimental value has skyrocketed since then. If ya made this far, thanks for reading :D

Even though the last boss can be cheezed with OP stuff, I still appreciated that even though the game was relatively easy, they didn't make the final boss too big of pushover.

My recommendations are the old Gameboy RPGs Final Fantasy Legend 1-3; you'll likely have to get them on emulator as they weren't released domestically, and even in foreign countries where they did get releases, they have not had remakes/ports in decades (except one Japan only release of FFL2). IMO, these games hold up quite well today, despite their simplicity. they're also in the 3-8 hour range.

As an Atelier fan, whose favorite Atelier is Iris, all 3 Atelier Iris games are great. The biggest difference between the others Ateliers and Iris, is that the Iris games are much more balanced between the Fighting and the crafting. Also glad an Atelier (let alone my favorite series of Ateliers) made your list.

Most of the games on this list are over 20 hours even when we talk about first quick playthrough. Unfortunately it's hard to find short rpg on home console. I have only 2 examples: Tsugunai atonement PS2 - should take around 10-15 hours to finish Last rebellion PS3 - also between 10-15 hours to finish For short rpgs I recommend looking at some titles on handheld consoles like gb advance, psp or ds. Also android or ios on mobile phones. But if you want really short rpgs I recommend java games for old mobile phones. Some examples: Apotheosize - around 3 hours Black citadel - around 2 hours Blades and magic - around 1-2 hours Ninja prophecy - around 3-4 hours Elven chronicles - around 7-10 hours

Disco Elysium, Vampyr, The Outer worlds, Jade Empire, Vampire the Masquerade bloodlines, Mass effect series, Obsidian's South park games, the very first Fallout, The entire Fable series. A bit of a variety there, mostly more recent games and all on the home console except Disco Elysium and Fallout.
