I had a 1st gen Neon coupe 5spd and loved it ,save for having to drop into it being 6'4". It was a blast to drive hard on the back roads, especially when I would remove the air filter to get the extra growl. I'll never know if I was missing much not having the twin-cam version.

theres a clear difference between the vr4 (AWD model) and the standard fwd model. like he said theyre kinda heavy and slow so the fwd models never really got that much love, and most of them are around the 5k mark at least in my area (PNW)

How about the Pontiac Grand Prix? You can have them with a 3.8l supercharged V6 (the 3800 is one of the best engines GM jas ever made) or you can get an honest to God LS (think the LS3) engine in the GXP. All under 5k. Only thing missing is a manual... ... which you can get in the Pontiac G6, a six speed at that. They're cheap because not many even know they exist. Rare that someone is shopping for a G6 specifically. Also the Infiniti Q45, the Lexus LS 400/430 and the Lexus SC300/400.

The C4 Corvette had engines that made quite a bit of torque, significantly more than the HP ratings when you're talking about the 95-91 models with the l98 engine. The 92-96, particularly the 96, are the cars to have as HP jumped to over 300 when the LT1 or LT4 was put in. Doubtful you'll find one for 5k though.

Idk where you get this info from but the z31 engine bay isn't that cramped as you make it out to be, you can actually do a lot more maintenance and repairs without removing the engine compared to the z32. The con tho is that making power can be tricky but the stock internals can withstand 400hp but 350 is safer. The suspension is weird as well. It can come with a digital dash and turbo stock. The only thing I'd say to look out for is the oil leaks but other than that they're extremely reliable. Keep in mind this was the last GT car before the z32 came.

working on mine rn, doesnt have title so i dont take it out too much but i love it, aftermarket support is fine but not for the things you wouldnt think about, for example if your windows dont work its probably not worth it (i made this mistake) because the regulators are a really common issue and are impossible to find unless you want to spend $400 each

I owned a z3 first gen and it sucked. Bad electrical problems, suspension sucked had to get aftermarket and not to mention up keep is expensive as hell. Traded mine for a bmw 530.
