4Kids released the first couple of episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh and Shaman King uncut with the original music and whatnot. It was a long time ago as a DVD release. Around the mid-2000s. I think they sold so poorly that they never bothered releasing the rest. The voice cast from the 4Kids dub was still in it, though. It was weird

The lackluster sales story was a cover-up to hide the fact that 4 kids produced and released those DVDs in cooperation with Funimation without proper permission from the licensees. They didn’t want to jump through the necessary legal hoops to continue the uncut release so they stopped it. Pretty foolish, really.

4Kids didnt censor it. The 2 big channels at the time wanted this stuff censored because it was a Saturday morning cartoon in America. Eric Stuart, the voice actor of Kaiba and director of the series, explained that on multiple Cons.

GX has a lot of these too. In the flashback scene, Viper's son "got sick" and the scene was removed, but in the original the kid's duel cards blew into the street and he got hit by a truck. Then there was the obvious "Hot Sauce" deck and the Bikinis in the bath. Edit: Okay now I realized they made a video about GX already lol

Sometimes censoring can cause plot hole. Remember the finger gun. Or the blade of the rod is remove so now marik looks like something strange when hes holding the rod in one hand and the other hand is just pkaced there diagonaly from the rod holding nothing

The funny thing about Harpie Lady (and also Harpie Chick) is that in their original TCG prints, their outfits weren't censored, whereas the subsequent printings would be.

It’s actually quite funny that 4kids changed the guns characters in Yugioh with finger guns cause guns were taboo in kids shows and yet in Jackie Chan adventures there was a few times where characters such as the Dark Hand pulled out guns. Hell in the first season of Pokemon had Team rocket rob a store with bazookas.

Yami Bakura sending Bones and his friends to actual HELL instead of the Shadow Realm is also a notable difference. But, seeing as the Shadow Realm was used so many times already, I can understand wanting a bit more variety in the list.

In the manga though, it’s just Bonz who duels him, and we only see the very end of the duel. In the anime, it’s Bonz and his Two friends, and we see the duel. Bakura wins and sends them to hell. In the manga however, Bakura steals Bonz’s soul straight up killing him.

My mother actually got into a lot of the anime my brother and I watched when we were growing up, YGO included. Of course, being an informed mother on the 00s with access to the internet, she learned about and read the manga/watched the uncut anime. She was actually the one to inform us about how censored the series was and the nature of how English cuts of anime were edited for kids

There's one thing that was forgotten from that list. Barrel Dragon. In the original japanese version, it had revolvers connected to it. In the english dub, it has futuristic looking cannons instead.

X-Head Cannon and Z-Metal Tank, as well as all the A-Z Fusions that use them. Originaly they had standard cannons, but were later changed to futuristic ones. What's ironic is that the Superdreadnoughts from the Railway Archetype are apparently fine having standard cannons. Liebe being the worst offender, having a whopping *15 cannons* (that we can count on the artwork).

Ironically, the Japanese version is still censored compared to the manga. Yami Marik presumably just stabs his father to death off-screen in the anime, but we see him murder his dad in more gruesome fashion in the manga. Not to mention his dad uses burning hot knives on Odion. The most gruesome scene in the manga. Instead of sand, Mai gets the "pleasure" of getting devoured by beetles. Bandit Keith's hand got turned into a gun and he unwilling shoots himself due to a punishment game. Although he comes back anyways in Yu-Gi-Oh R. Oh and did I forget to mention that some random thief gets his innards set on fire by the Millennium Ring?

I wish he also mentioned how even the Japanese anime toned down Mai’s duel with Marik. In the manga, there was none of this “lose your memory” stuff. Her duel was the same as Joey’s: whatever pain your monster suffers, you feel it too. Changing it even messed up some character development with Joey, because when he experienced the same shadow game she did, it made Joey admire Mai’s tenacity and respect her more as a duelist that she could endure that.

You just blew my mind about the Shadow Realm being a dub added thing! Like 🤯🤯 I'm from Australia, so I have only known and grew up with the dub. Of course, death is horrible, but I feel it's at least more final than being left in basically purgatory. There are some things that have been censored that I feel I like the dub more, like the sexual humour just feel odd to me for this show. Besides Tristan being a little flirt/ girl crazy was fine, I feel weird having Joey and Grandpa being like that too and more so. It just doesn't fit the vibes for me. But there are things that I feel I would have been fine with if left as is, like the harpies, dark mag girl cover up.

Theres a lot of strange translation choices as well. Celtic Guardian is originally named "Elf Swordsman" not sure why that had to be changed. The 3 god cards were originally Divine Dragon Osiris (Slifer the Sky Dragon) The God of Obelisk (Obelisk the Tormentor) Winged God-Dragon of Ra. One would assume it was to remove any religious tie ins by changing the name "Osiris" and removing "God" from Obelisk, but they still refer to them as "god cards" and barely altered the translation of Ra

I'd honestly thought valon's whole arc would have a spot but no. Valon was an orphan getting in alot of fights. at the orphanage which is also a churge, mafia members were evicting the place and while the nun got pushed around she encouraged Valon to not fight back. However the church instead gets burned down (by Dartz) and Valon was under the thought the mafia members did it, so he beat them so badly with a pipe (too death it looked like). he was sent to prison. He continued to fight and was at risk of solitary confinement, but was given an offer to prove his worth with the orichalcos deck on an island like some hunger games battle. Dartz accepted that result and took him in.

This is why I liked and sticked with Japan version than the English version they kept making too much changes and cut so many scenes too. However the names of their monsters' I am completely fine with just that I wished they could have leave everything and go on ahead to show the whole series and full version than had to do so many things and didn't showed anything to why it's re-editted on the English version while the Japan version shows it completely different than both versions

Kinda funny, in Europe especially the german speaking Countrys, not one of this Scenes was censored but nowadays everything gets censored and Scenes get cut. Doesn't matter if it's "real" stuff in the sense of a "krimi"-Show"/criminal and Police Shows like NCIS, where the literally cut every single shooting Scene and where you left confused where some of the few dead ones you actually see are coming from or even if it's in the Show Scrubs. No kidding but they also cut now Scenes when J.D calls Turk brownbear (or however he calls him in english) and other Jokes are also completly cut now. The animated Shows nowadays have actually no Chance anymore to not getting censored. Don't know how it's going there with english Dubs or Versions now but i honestly hope it got better there for you Guys.
