One that I was using an awful lot on Dueling Network and in old Yugioh Game Boy Advance games, when I was getting into Yugioh was Kinetic Soldier (nowadays known as Cipher Soldier for some reason). He was pretty much the most powerful monster I had for the strategy I developed without netdecking as a 13 years old boy. Level 3, so played nicely under Gravity Bind and Level Limit - Area B, Warrior decks were pretty common among opponents I encountered and synergized with DNA Surgery, basically making him a 3350 beatstick. Once, one of my friends organized and judged (as the person who knew the most about the game) a tournament for people from our Pokemon forum and he was called multiple times by my opponents, because this card was just unfair and they never heard of anything like this (it was prohibited to talk about people's decks with someone who hasn't played against them yet, so the reaction was almost always the same).

When yugioh came out, I was in 7th grade, but I remember I sometimes played afterschool with elementary kids. I remember sometimes playing and trading stuff like rude Kaiser for La Jinn or battle ox. That was in 2003-04, so cards like Scrap iron scarecrow and Marshmallon didn't exist. I never saw elementary or middle school kids play yugioh after 2006. Ever, sadly. We did continue to play with one friend long after everyone else abandoned ship.

I started collecting when MRD was the new release so my first three Exodia pieces were from trading a Spellbinding Circle (1e) for the head, left arm, and left leg (all also 1e). The dude knew their value at the time so I have no idea why he wanted a Spellbinding Circle so badly but I wasn't going to say no considering how much MRL I had already bought meaning it wasn't my only copy. Also, I don't know why that thing says The Fiend Megacyber was 2004 in the TCG. PSV released at the end of 2002 and that was it's debut, not Dark Beginning. It was called Dark Beginning because it was a reprint set featuring the beginning sets with PSV being the fourth. It was even a tournament pack reprint like a year prior to Dark Beginning.

MR VOLCANO WOW ! One of my favorite old cards! And all those "darkfire soldiers". Scrap iron scarecrow was not in my playground deck as an '95 kid that time and on elementay school we were playing most normal monsters, and yugi-kaiba-joey focused cards plus all of us were chasing the dark magician-blue eyes- red eyes-exodia-egyptian god cards as we didnt know english. However and primary school the above cards were introduced to us and i made a DARK focused deck (maju garzett, mega fiend cyber, reptilliane medusa) and instinctively was going into tele dad without knowing the meta(with destiny heroes, rainbow dark dragon, dad etc). I was just looking the cards and thinking "oh my god, they are so badass and broken".

Dian Keto was good at the very beginning, but she got power crept by Poison of the Old Man, who have you 1200 points OR could burn your opponent for 800, AND it was a quick play so you could do it on your opponent's turn.

I'm a bit younger, so the cards I remember are a bit different, even if some of these are all-time classics, but I'm sure some will relate. For us, it was Garunix. The amount of ruling mistakes we made with this card, omg. We thought you could foolish it and trigger it off kirin. We thought discarding and tributing also worked. This card was so broken at our playground that everyone just rocked a fire king starter deck at some point.

Not a single card but when I was in high school like 2012ish there was a yugioh club at school and a whole deck I made got the ban hammer because everyone hated it. Ojama synchro. Basically you turboed into ojama knight and king to lock all monsters and while doing that you used a combination of rescue rabbit and junk synchro to cheat out the extra ojamas out of the deck and then revive to use for medium level synchros and rank 2xyzs. It was so nasty of a lock back then everyone said we are refusing to duel if you even so much as bring the deck

I can feel the nostalgia, our Meta was heavily ruled by traps like mirror force and it ´s variations, magic cylinders, draining shields and even Sakuretsu Armor. with this Jinzo was also a top contender for the monsters. other than these Battle Traps we focused our decks on attack modification, and monster removal. good old times, where one card could change anything. but even as kids we didn´t like pendulums and banned it on the playground. and the bending of the rules was also an experience. like Synchro summon, what do you mean the levels need to add up. the card clearly says one tuner and one non tuner monster, so let me summon my stardust dragon with this scapegoat token and my junk Synchron. and before you obviously summond penguin soldier back from the gy but in face down defence, because Junk synchron doesn´t specify this. and because it´s face down the effects aren´t negated. and always in battle, bounce penguin soldier himself and an opponent monster.

Stardust was unbeatable when I was younger. I am convinced the guy who used it (who was way older than us) was cheating somehow, like saying it could come back no matter how it was destroyed or that it was an omni-negate, but I distinctly remember that he would just turbo out Stardust and the rest of us just basically stopped playing the game. Literally! We stopped playing the game and played Magic instead. It does me proud that multiple Blaze of Destruction cards made it on here, that was my favourite deck, I thought using it made me a genius.

It's weird that there isn't an example of a "high rarity or promo card that is big but bad" like Dark Magician Knight or Tri-Horned Dragon. Especially with the anime's treatment of "rare card = strong card" and just general "kid logic" dictating that a rare or otherwise exclusive card SHOULD be powerful, it's very "playground Yugioh" to build a deck specifically throwing as much shiny cardboard in there even if it's not good. Well, I don't mind that - it gives some extra soul.
