If asked, Pat Metheny might say that his "three best solos" are the ones he's played most recently. He claims that he never goes back to listen to his old recordings. He focuses on his present rendition of a song or piece and that each time he plays he does so to improve and get better doing it. The guy is a consummate professional. It was such an awakening, for me, to have seen him live in the late 70's. I'd not heard such haunting dynamics from a guitar. It was also great to witness Jaco Pastorius play live several times. Mostly at the "Musicians Exchange", a small venue in Fort Lauderdale. So glad these two musicians met and created together. Stay healthy, Pat, and remain dynamic for those of us who cherish your creativity and expressive beauty.

Great solos. Personally my favorite is the solo from Have You Heard on the More Travels DVD. Mind blowing. Close second would be the one from Better Days Ahead live from The Road to You. But I love all of Metheny's playing! Thanks for the upload.

I’ve been a hardcore Pat fan since early 1982. Seen him live many times and heard almost all of his recorded works. I think you’ve got a good short list. What’s to argue about? Nothing. It depends on what moves you. He’s unmatched as a composer and instrumentalist and has grown musically as his career has endured. His technical facility is unrivaled. You’re either a Pat fan or not.
@evilswissy Жыл бұрын
have you never heard of or listened to guthrie govan? josh smith? alex hutchings? not undermining pat metheny by any means, but there are modern guitar composers that are far more advanced in technical skill and over all creativity... that's just a short list... any way.. respect bro 🙏

On the studio albums my favorite solo(s) are from the song James on the ECM album Offramp. Pat goes first then Lyle follows. Each solo clocks in at two minutes and each is, in my view, perfect.

I think you really need to stick to the studio albums when doing this, as so many people are not going to know some random solo from a random show as your three examples come from. It's much more enjoyable if everyone is one the same page so to speak (has the same candidates in mind to vote for). With that being said, one of the solos that always stuck out to me is the one from Facing West from Secret Story. So much emotion in that one.

Rounding down the entire life's long discography of a musical legend to a 'Best Three' is ARBITARY, at best. Surely, all the act can really effect is an exposure towards ignorance or naivety?
