Special Operations in the US Military has become a bigger part of warfare since World War II. Each branch has a specialized highly trained group. What are some of the differences between the US Navy SEALs and Army Green Berets? What are the differences in their origins, training and how they approach combat? Do they specialize in different missions and terrain? This video seeks to answer the questions about how Special Forces are different in the two branches of the US Navy and US Army. There is some overlap between the two but there are also a lot of differences.

I have a personal love for SF because they took the time out to train conventional forces such as my battalion back when I was Infantry. Through them they showed me true communalism & brotherhood. NO SERIOUSLY it was weird like we built a LEGIT bond between those guys and even had plans to have a barbacue like it was a family reunion or something. Unfortunately mission got pushed to the left & they had shipped out WITHOUT US EVEN REALIZING. Even worse one of the most charismatic GBs was KIA 2 days before Christmas while on mission. Never felt true depression until I saw his face in a memorial post on Facebook.

He has some information wrong, but I already stopped listening to him seriously when he said that Latin is the root of ALL languages (in the first minute)... Who does not even present this simple information correctly wants to tell me something about special forces? Every halfway educated person knows that this statement is nonsense. Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, PARTLY English and a few less relevant languages are descended from Latin. All the others developed completely independently of Latin. No way I trust His informations about something more difficult.

JSOC Commander was an Admiral in 2011 and Afghanistan was DEVGRU aka Team SIX "territory". During early mid 2000's. Iraq was the more active war zone so it was assigned to Delta and Afghanistan to DEVGRU. When Iraq winded down, DEVGRU grew in stature because Afghanistan became more active. I. had the privilege of serving as an SF medic on active duty from 70-73 and in the active reserves from 73-83. Chris Cappy's description of Seals verses Green Berets is one of the best summary descriptors I have encountered in helping the public to actually understand differences between the two. For a more detailed discussion about the evolution of Army SF during the Vietnam era, I would like to mention two books, "De Oppresso Liber" and "A Thousand Autumns", by CC Southerland. For those interested in Foundation historical details about the evolution of Army Special Forces, I believe these novels, although fiction in toto, detail many of the foundation elements essential to the definition of special operations, both SEALS and Green Berets. Thanks especially to Chris Cappy for a most excellent series of military topical discussions as well as for his service in Iraq. Hooooahhh!

0:52 "Latin is the root of all languages." In reality, Latin is the root for only a few languages, such as Spanish, Italian, French, Romanian, Portuguese, and a few others. English borrowed Latin words after invasions of Egland centuries ago. Latin came from the larger Indo-European group, which also includes Germanic, Hitite, Sanskrit, Armenian, Russian, and others. The green beret was founded by the British commandos, as was the maroon beret for airborne forces. Similarly, the British commando dagger has also been adopted by many US spec ops units who trace their principles back to US soldiers who trained with British commandos such as the Canadian/US Devil’s Brigade paratroopers and the US Army Rangers. It’s also notable the role of the UK special forces, mainly through initial combat experience and training procedures, in helping to establish numerous US spec ops units, such as the Navy SEALs.

As someone who actually served in SF and had to learn memorize the history your conflating a few things. Yes the idea of wearing a Green and Maroon Beret waa adopted from British Royal Marine Commandos and British Parachute Regiment that has nothing to do with their training creation of doctrine. For example Special Forces was officially created in 1952. The Green Beret didnt become official head gear until a visit to Fort Bragg by JFK in 1961, where he made it a Presidential decoration. The Special.Forces tab and seperate career fields and SF as its own seperate branch didnt occur until the founding of USSOCOM in 1987. So SF Selection and the Q Course of today bear no resemblance to Vietnam Era training though the mission itself is still the same both of those programs and Army Special Forces is a uniquely Ameeican invention of men like Col. William Donovan who served in the WWII OSS and in fact created the OSS, CIA and US Army Special Forces. Delta Force and The Ranger Regiment however both have heavy Brittish influence. Delta is patterned on the Brittish SAS by a US Col( Charlie Beckwith) who led Green Berets in Vietnam and later went through SAS Selction and training as part of an exchange program that still exists. Major Robert Rogers who created the concepts that guide the Rangers today was a British Officer that specialized in Irregular/Guerilla Warfare during both the French and Indian war and the American Revolution. Modern Rangers are very similar to British Commandos as the have virtually identical missions.

I feel like you blurred the line between tier 1 and tier 2 in this video. Delta and Devgru pretty much do the same missions. Both are tier 1 units. Most people think of Seals they think of Seal team 6. When in reality most seal teams are tier 2 just like Army SF and Rangers.
@michaelmatthias9495

Not quiet true. Devgru only has seals. Who can only provide knowledge gained through first hand experience of seal missions. Delta has people from everywhere. They can pull from people with knowledge learned throughout their time in the seals, marine raiders, special forces, pj’s, rangers, etc. Also, the rangers have a tier 1 unit as well.

Nice job. I can tell you from my experience that using NSW in the FID mission was very square peg round hole - I have mad respect for the ODA guys. It’s a bit beyond the basic compare and contrast but a lot of those “sexy” missions are normally executed in an echelon above/adjacent to Navy NSW/Army SF... namely ST6DEVGRU/DELTA under JSOC - with selection and training above and beyond the elements they are drawn from. I also think it’s time to give a small nod to the Marine Force Recon SOC guys that are were carving a respectable niche out for themselves with some growing mission overlap capabilities in combine operating areas. Couple good options there for follow on videos... keep it up.

Having worked with both forces in theater I can say they're definitely the best at what they do albeit they have very different jobs with some small overlap. I think the tool analogy works well. SEALs are a hammer you can bring down when you need someone to take a dirt nap quick and dirty. SF are a screw driver you can use when you need to tighten up freedom fighters to go against a force they already don't like but lack the training or resources to do anything about or if you just need somebody who speaks the language and can stay outta sight while SCUD hunting.
