1. Keep a comfortable hold of air in your lungs for boyancy, similar to backfloating. 2. Sculling gently. 3. Keep knees high, at almost 90 degrees to your body, while doing egg-beater motion. 4. Keep feet at almost 90 degrees to your legs, not like freestyle. 1 & 2 are easy to remember - it comes naturally. 3 & 4 you tend to forget if you don't swim for a long time. My personal experience.

I never knew how important it was to have the correct breathing technique. If you don’t keep a good amount of air in your lungs mean you are gonna be more likely to sink? Or is it more about technique, or is it both. I’ve never really tried to keep my lungs full with air while treading and that might be the reason why I always find myself sinking, that or my technique just needs serious work lol
@SWIMVICE3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is a great question. It is definitely a combination of both. Your buoyancy due to air and relaxing your extremities help you to be supported by the water. If you tighten your body and resist the water while not having enough air in your lungs (due to tensing up), you will sit lower under the water. It takes steps to let go and allow the water to support you. However, this is necessary before learning the complexities of treading water. Enjoy your practice and work on buoyancy consistently until you feel more comfortable. 🙌🏊♂️ Best, Coach Mandy

I think some people are simply denser than others, especially us athletic folks. Even floating on my back, my head is consistently submerged while i notice others are able to keep their head above water with minimal effort.

I'm really over weight and just started learning to swim this year. I went to the ocean last month. I could hold my feet straight now and lift my hands out of the water and still keep my head above water. Floating on my back or stomach was pretty easy. I imagined how easy it would be at the Dead Sea.

Coach Mandy in your opinion is the eggbeater kick easier/more efficient for treading than the breaststroke kick? Thanks
@SWIMVICE3 жыл бұрын
If done correctly, a light/relaxed egg beater kick is more efficient. 👍🏊♂️🙌

Also, egg-beater is balanced and keeps you at same level. Breast-stroke kick will bounce you up and down.

I could have sworn that I learned how to tread by scissoring my legs, both extended and pointed down. I haven't swam for years, but my muscle memory is telling me that's how I used to do it. Is that just an inefficient way? I've always thought if I was in an emergency situation I'd be fine, because I grew up swimming pretty well. But now I'm wondering if I should relearn.

Hey Coach Mandy, I need your help! I have watched and re-watched all your treading related videos but can't seem to hit my target. I have a swim test where I have to tread for 10 mins, I have been constantly training in the pool almost daily but I can't seem to get past 2-3 mins. I get extremely gassed around the 3 min mark and can't pass that threshold. What do you think are some common issues that lead swimmmers to gas out? I try to be relaxed, keep enough air in my lungs to float, tried different techniques, but still 3 mins MAX. HELP ME PLEASE!
@SWIMVICE Жыл бұрын
Treading for 10 minutes requires that you are fully relaxed (breathing and body tension) and your movements are smooth and minimal. You most likely are holding tension throughout your body and have no idea you are doing so. Can you float?

hi, so when we exhale do we exhale all of the air out of our lungs or just a bit? also in the event we exhale all of the air out and sink to the bottom what do we do afterwards to get above water?

Just flutter kick to the top while keeping your arms pushing you to the top and you should reach the surface, or just regular swim

I’m sorry if this sounds dense. I struggle with treading water. I have backed up the video and I wish I can see it in slow mo. You mean each hand is doing a figure 8? Or coordinate movements into a big figure 8. I’m guessing it’s the first as it’s more natural feeling but I thought I should check. I have made the mistake once too many times of learning something wrong and having a dickens of a time training myself out of it ! LOL
@SWIMVICE4 жыл бұрын
lol! No worries, I understand. The figure 8 pattern is for your feet. Your right foot moves counterclockwise while the left foot moves clockwise creating a figure 8 pattern. Watch during the slow motion segment you will see what I mean. The most important thing about treading water is relaxing and understanding your buoyancy. The rest is just feeling the water. Hope this helps! -Coach Mandy 😄🏊🙏

A better coach is that who can teach in simple. Here you are treading but i was not treading in swimming pool when i goes accordingly.
