I hate to break the news to y'all, but Death Metal doesn't offend non Metal people like you think. Non Metal people can't handle high pitch screaming Vocals. I have played lots of Death Metal around people who hate Heavy music. I also have played bands like Cirith Ungol, and they always demand that I play something else. That all the screaming hurts their ears, and gives them a headache. Unless you hand someone a lyric sheet most people don't find Death Metal that offensive. Unless of course it's something like Deicide - Death By Dawn, Deeds of Flesh - Infecting Them with Falsehood , or Cannibal Corpse - The Pick Axe Murders due to the harsh animalistic sounding screaming. Other than getting offended by the Horror movie intros most average people aren't bothered by Mortician type of music. Black Metal actually will clear a room much quicker than just about anything Death Metal could.

Death metal and adjacent has at least some ability to cross over into the mainstream/“normie” territory (not saying thats a good or bad thing) ex: Cannibal Corpse, Dethklok, Slipknot (yes I know they aren’t DM thats why I said adjacent, but they still have undeniable DM influence in the early shit), whatever deathcore-band-of-the-month, etc. Black metal’s only “mainstream” appeal is goth chicks using it for aesthetic or 15 year olds on tiktok acting like they’re the first to discover the Mayhem drama. Anecdotally speaking however, I can say my girl who’s mostly into mall emo and pop punk is okay with high pitched screams but it’s hard for her to get into death growls and gutturals. Therefore, I’m able to get her into a good bit of BM, but only a select amount of DM. Edit: Even bands like Dark Funeral, Dimmu Borgir and Blackbraid still only exist within the realm of metal basically. The only one I can say is somewhat mainstream is Cradle of Filth, but that seems more like a UK thing.

Elaborating on my previous reply: I don’t think anyone is really “offended” by extreme metal anymore, at least in mainstream society (people in metal and hardcore or whatever certainly love to be offended at stuff). They (the mainstreamers) just don’t like it, it’s certainly not for everyone. The whole Satanist scare is over and done and the only thing you can do to offend people is have the wrong worldview, but good luck breaking out of the underground with that.

I like obscure death metal but Mastodon is one of my favorite bands. Being a lifelong musician it's real hard to not like or respect that early stuff. I get it that they became household but if they stopped at the EP it would be hailed. Yeah my comparison to Mastodon is having a unique sound and progressing very quickly. I think most people who give them a lot of crap didn't hear them until they were household names, and didn't know about "Today is the day" and going into the EP. There weren't many people out there taking the progressive route with music that heavy. But I could understand if people didn't hear them until after 2010 to not get into the back catalogue as well

Because not only was there nothing Metal, Rock music didn't even exist yet. There were no Thrash, Death, or Black Metal bands in 1976 .
