The combat mission classic trilogy is my favorite wargame series. The new ones are good as well, but something about that abstraction of the original makes it an easier to play experience for me.

CCIII was one of my favourite games way back when. One campaign that sticks in my memory was playing the long campaign as the Russians. We'd reached the stalingrad scenario. I deployed, and hit start - immediately realising I'd forgotten to redeploy the 120mm mortar. I'd left it right on the front line, next to a factory, and it was one of those units that either couldn't be moved or moved excrutiatingly slowly. I cursed, and hit the truce button - which needs the opponent to agree for the battle to end. A German tiger emerged from the factory, which made me metally write off the mortar. But the mortar faced the tank and lobbed a round right on top of the tiger, killing it instantly. The AI immediately hit the truce as well. Shortest battle I ever had, and a huge sigh of relief that I managed to keep the mortar, which got a bucketload of xp just for killing the tank.

I think those 3 games you were covering were more along the line of tactical simulations (local battle tactics) rather than strategic simulations (which involve various factors on a far larger than tactical scale...which can include overall planning for campaigns, supply, war production, economic management, etc...). In any case, they all looked good. The WWII military games I liked best in the 90's were: Steel Panthers (tactical), Panzer General/Allied General (strategic and tactical), and one involving carrier battles in the Pacific, but I can't recall its name at the moment. I generally prefer turn-based games as opposed to "real time" simulations, although the "real time" stuff is okay if I can "pause" it when I want to.
@allanjensen6855Ай бұрын
I think you are thinking of Carriers at War 1941-1945: Fleet Carrier Operations in the Pacific by SSG - That was a wargame I enjoyed alot too (my 4th wargame actually and Im an oldtimer as well) ☺

Love the CLOSE COMBAT series especially the audio work which is incredibly immersive bringing all the excitement and horror of war. My first wargame was LORDS OF THE RISING SUN on the Commodore Amiga 500 back in 1989 along with BATTLETECH THE CRESCENT HAWK'S INCEPTION. Before that it was tabletop gaming with my first wargame being AXIS & ALLIES and my first hardcore wargame being BATTLETECH from FASA followed a few years later by NAPOLEON AT WATERLOO which had a fantastic detailed map and a nice supply line system which started awakening the magic of real world game mechanics beyond science fiction. CLOSE COMBAT is great but they need to update the ui for modern systems. Many of the games i picked up during a bundle sale earlier this year have all sorts of full screen issues with many not going full screen or other issues which ruin the immersive view. Fortunately the bloodcurdling audio of raw death dealing BLAZING COMBAT!!! is still working flawlessly. Thanks for the great video AgrippaMaxentius. Perfect timing with November soon arriving which is my favorite time to play wargames. Looking forward to the release of ZEPHON on the 8th. Have a great weekend and HAPPY HALLOWEEN! ☕

I love the 3 original Combat mission games better than the newer versions , what people have to remember is that they are based on Avalon Hills Squad leader games as was Close Combat in which both versions veered off the original premise , that’s why there are 3 figures in the Combat Mission games and make it more of a platoon level game as you can double click on command to manoeuvre. I wish they would remaster the original 3 as I they think they are nearly a perfect system , my other wish is that you could have a campaign add on like they were working on in the early 2000s which was ended due to 2nd engine being worked on. The modern versions have every man in the squad and skid about all over the place and so seems to have lost the original feeling to me , I remember my platoon in foxholes along a ridge next to a road to Bastogne with fog shrouding the trees in the distance with enemy vehicles coming along the road as yet unseen, the foxholes were better than the modern versions which look like termite hills, Some of the old mods make the games look fantastic.
