I'm not sure I've ever seen any of these. The ones I encounter most often are: 1. The three most popular I see are not counting all their strokes when the numbers get pretty high thinking I won't notice. Some golfers seem to have trouble getting above the number 5 sometimes. 2. Improving your lie in the rough. 3. Not counting the missed 2 footer.

“Rough” is subjective so sometimes I self impose “ground under repair” when it’s ball plugged in the mud or an area where it’s just dirt because the local muni course is too cheap to take the greens fees and invest in making that dark brown area green. I’m more accepting of mulligan off the tee (It’s a $500+ dollar driver so that crap shot never happened) than misremembering the missed “gimme” putt to where a golfer never has to own up to a 5 on a par 3.

I don't understand tennis but people love to play. No I can see watching golf on TV can get boring but playing golf is different.

Let me add to the ways people cheat.. Had a guy at our club cheat in this crazy way, that was kind of genius... except for the fact it's cheating.. He would walk up to the green as everyone is and just pick up his ball and not mark it.. he would kind of pretend mark it.. Then when everyone was marking theirs or chipping on, he would throw a penny towards the hole. Obviously he was secretive about it, but when we all would go to putt we would say where are you at? He would say oh right there.. A penny is not a great visual marker. When I started catching on is when we would hit our approach shots in and I knew I was inside his shot, and then all of a sudden he was closer to the hole.. Sometimes it would be 5-10 ft closer. His handicap went down fast. I finally told a playing partner one day and we all had caddies that busted him in a tournament.... CRAZY!!

I got called out for the ball-marking one once... I wasn't trying to get an advantage, it was a 30 foot putt, didn't expect to make it whether it was an inch forward or back, I was just laying it down close, because who cares. After getting called out I kicked the ball backwards a foot or so, then sunk the putt lol.

Garrett Rose or bogey when they had double bogey. A cheat doing that 3 or 4 times in the round can take mid to high 80-90 score to a low 80-90 score, big difference.

You're playing with the wrong caliber of golfer! LOL! I've seen the ball marker trick. One of my favorites is moving your mark out of someone's line and failing to move it back. Mostly that's just a mistake, but I have called a couple of guys on it. As long as there's not $$ on the line, I really don't care what they do. But when there's a bet, I watch like a hawk.

When I’m playing for fun with my dad or the Sunday afternoon round I’ll do the lifesaver trick out of the rough or long second shots just for a laugh, but all tournaments I compete in i would never. Cheating takes the fun out of the game because the goal is to beat yourself, if you cheat then your cheating yourself in the long run.

I played with 3 car dealers. They never lost a ball.... They moved the ball til it suited them...from behind trees...……. they could see their balls when they hit in the rough or in the woods. If their ball was on the other side of a hump or hill, they could magically see it. A ball was "never unplayable"

I play on a Public course in Japan and ball marks abound. If I have a long putt, and there is a ball mark or cleat mark right in front of my ball, I’ll move it right or left to avoid the mark rather than spend time repairing it. Don’t get me wrong, I repair marks. I have a greenskeeper size Spider Divot tool on a golf shaft. I’ll repair 10-15 ball marks sometimes. But there are times when I’m more focused on putting.

The group of bandits at my club (who play in six-somes) cheat each other on nearly every shot. It's absolute mayhem and they usually end up cussing each other out and fighting before sitting down to a six hour poker game afterward. The best golfer in the group, who'd been playing at this course for forty years, winning everyone's money every day for all that time, was cheating at poker. He'd bring his own 'pocket" cards with him. He'd been doing it for decades. He quit the club and moved...that's how bad it was....and this club had proprietary memberships. He actually sold his membership to get away.

Well, those are interesting. But the number one (#1) way of cheating is, always keeping a clean unhit ball in your pocket. When you pick up your ball from the green, switch the clean unhit ball for the ball you are about to putt.

Another thing you can do with lip balm - which IS legal - is to lubricate the sole of a wedge before a pitch from a tight lie. You would be surprised how much this helps the wedge slip between the ball and the ground on some kinds of grass. It is legal because the rule against applying foreign matter only refers to the face of the club. It also works with spit. You have to apply it just before your actual stroke because a practice swing will wipe it off.

Please. While the things you mentioned are against the rules, the average golfer would not receive any significant advantage doing any of these things. Sure, they may move the ball two inches closer to the cup for their putt or may gain an extra five yards on their drive by using chap stick or a lifesaver but over an entire round, I bet these things would not make more than a 2-3 stroke difference, at best. Probably less for most folks.

Yup. That's exactly what I was saying. Evidently, Bryan is not very familiar with the game of golf. And, no Brian, 2-3 stokes is not a lot.........to a high handicapper, their score ends up being 102 instead of 105. A mid-handicapper, an 81 instead of an 83. To a low cap/pro, maybe, but most (if not all) would not stoop to these silly tactics.

Bryan Potter is right... 2-3 strokes is a lot to any player, especially in competition. A 103 compared to a 101 doesn’t sound like a huge deal but that could be the difference between a net 73 and net 71 for a high handicapper playing in a handicapped event... I bet their opponent would really think it’s a big deal if they played by all of the rules and shot a net 72.. With that said... the only infraction in this video that I actually see happen fairly often is the ball marking. The real top 3 cheaters to look out for are 3) those who can hit into the deepest of woods and never lose a ball. I’ve played with some real magicians who can turn a brand new white ProV1 into an old yellow Callaway then make par with it. 2) the players that just flat out lie about their score - did you think we didn’t see that fluffed chip? 1) The sand baggers... it’s amazing how many 12-14 handicappers I know that can shoot 73-75 every time there is some money on the line.

I've seen a great variation of the marked ball cheat. My playing partner caught our opponents partner doing it. The guy would approach his ball and then, like a magician, throw his marker ~ 1 foot closer to the hole. He was so good at it I never noticed it. My partner pulled the guys partner aside and had him observe. He then put his arm on his shoulder and said, "So, the question that lies before you is this, do you say something, or do I"?

The marking of the ball to gain an inch or two, we call “nudgin”. Had a guy named Tuffy, we played ready golf, he would play fast and get to the green first. He would walk up to mark his ball, take a quick peek around, and as he bent down to mark it he would toss his coin a few feet closer to the hole.

Never seen anything like those. There is almost no advantage anyhow. No.1 for me is the person who never loses a ball. Doesn't matter how deep the grass is, he always finds it, somehow. No.2 is the Boot Wedge. A little kick to bring the ball into a more playable position. No.3 is ignoring the rules when dropping a ball, dropping in a much more favourable position.

I had a guy pull all these cheats IN THE SAME ROUND: - 'The Muddy Ball' - Lift, clean and place the ball claiming there was mud on the ball long before we could get over to inspect it. - ''The Yard Leaper' - He would lift, clean and toss the ball 10-15 yards closer to the hole claiming there were "roots and stones in the rough". He had no explanation why it was always closer to the hole. - 'The Inchworm Trick' - He also had the poker chip marker and would ALWAYS mark the ball with the token in front and then replace the ball generously in front of the token picking up 3"-4" closer to the hole. If he kept going it would eventually be in the hole without even putting. - 'Gimmie Disease' - On one hole, he hit two shots out of bounds, chunked two chips and then growled at the scorekeeper " Gimmie a 5 " I could go on...... Needless to say, we don't play together anymore. Anthony, I hope you read this and mend your ways. God is watching. 😇

Oh man I play with co-workers and buddies that cheat all the time. Putting past the hole and pulling a Phil and hitting it while it's still rolling but only giving themselves a bogie when it's more like a triple bogie. Not counting their extra stroke when they hit out of bounds or in a water hazard. Hitting off the "T" for the second time because their first T shot sucked but not counting that first T shot because their second one was better. Moving their ball for a better lie...I could go on and on!!!!! I hate it, but in reality they are only hurting themselves. Awesome Video! The petroleum jelly/Vaseline/lubricant on the club face really does work! I've been golfing for over 30 years and I always thought this was an old sub*urban legend. I got a set of Mizuno Mph5/Mp25's this season (my first forged irons, LOVE 'EM!!!) anyway I read that it's a good idea to put a thin layer of lubricant on forged irons after cleaning them, so I did. Then I was in the clubhouse on a boring rainy day and decided to chip a few with my wedge. I'd forgotten about the oil, but I noticed my chips were kicking straighter, instead of kicking right like they usually do from the cut spin. I realized it was the oil that was lowering the side spin. A high handicap Member and friend of mine came in and we decided to test the lubricant on our drivers. I'm a 5 hdcp and my driver speed is 100 mph. I draw the ball. My friend is a 16 Hdcp and he plays a big slice and only swings about 70 mph. The lubricant had a huge effect on his drives. They were a lot straighter and atleast 15 yards longer. I gained about 7 yards but my drives were a lot straighter. Definitely noticeable effects. But it's CHEATING! That life-saver one is money. I usually find cheaters mess with their score, rather than use slick moves like the life savers or marking trick. My neighbor like to be a "creative" scorer and tends to "forget" some of his shots during the holes. He is pretty bad, so I do not make an issue out of it.

I dunno, but maybe the guy who can afford the best custom fit clubs has a huge advantage. Lifesavers and chapstick are 1/1000s the cost. I remember in 2019 when I upgraded my old POS drive and I went from being 20 yards behind to being 20+ yards ahead of the pack.

Those are not even close to the most common cheats. There is no real gain there. The foot wedge when nobody is looking. Rolling your ball when you are supposed to play it down. Improving their lie by “checking to make sure it’s theirs” The cheats in the video are about like teeing off ahead of the teeing area by 6”. Illegal, yes. Big benefit, no. Moving a ball 6” to be able to take a full swing instead of having to punch out is a stroke saved. That’s what you need to watch for. Lubing your driver will also decrease your backspin and therefore you will probably loose distance. Gaining 2” on the green is cheating, but probably won’t make a difference in a putt unless you are avoiding a non repairable obstacle like a cleat mark. If you are doing these things you need to work on your game as much as you work on cheating.

Taking a lateral drop when you lose a ball. Playing a ball that is outside of the white boundary marker just because you found it. Also, cleat marks are repairable on the green now. New rule change this year.

Every time I hit into the woods and lose my ball I find 1-4 balls. The guys I play with can’t hear (four!) don’t want to wander into the woods and have aching backs. I once finished a round of golf having found about 30-40 balls. You should see the lost and found at the club house.

The one to look out for is the guy who hits the ball in the deep rough, goes charging off to get ahead of the other players and miraculously finds it sitting up nicely, or the guy who always has 2 balls in his pocket
