I don't care what anyone says: The Cable Guy (w/ Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick) is one of the most unfairly hated movies of all-time. Jim did a really good job playing a creep who wouldn't leave his friend (Matthew) alone.

One overlooked dark comedy is Griffin and Phoenix (sometimes subtitled "A Love Story", and released in some countries as Today Is Forever), starring Peter Falk and Jill Clayburgh as two star-crossed lovers who, unknown to one another, are both suffering from terminal cancer diagnoses. Another movie in a similar vein was The End, directed by and starring Burt Reynolds. His lead character is diagnosed with a fatal blood disease, with not much more than a year to live. He chooses to commit suicide and the movie follows the various failed attempts he tries over the course of the film. Dom DeLuise is achingly funny as Marlon Borunki, a paranoid schizophrenic with dissociative identity disorder who aids in the lead character's myriad of different attempt to euthanize himself.

Well, you probably got No.1 right (and you roped in one non-English film), but you seem amazed that you could consider one from 1944: Thirties and forties were prime eras for dark comedy. Having jokes in it does not necessarily make a comedy; instead of THREE BILLBOARDS, you might consider FARGO. Some staggering, staggering omissions; KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS, M*A*S*H You could consider the tone of a lot of silents - Chaplin's could go pretty grim, or how about OUR HOSPITALITY? THE CAT AND THE CANARY, and quite a lot of Bob Hope: MY FAVOURITE BRUNETTE. Having jokes in it does not necessarily make a comedy (with a lot of your choices), but you might consider THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, AND THEN THERE WERE NONE (original), THE THIN MAN DUCK SOUP, THE LADYKILLERS (original), BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
