Superman was one of the worst games I played in 2023, for sure. I'm glad to be able to spread the "love" for the game, though!

12:01 you have imagined correctly. I grew up in the 90s and played a lot of the most popular consoles of the time such as the snes, genesis, ps1, and in 64. But also includes the Game Boy which I especially played on the big screen thanks to the super game boy. I never owned the NES version of blades of steel but I played the game boy version a lot and it's surprisingly really good. I'm mostly into other games but I do enjoy a well-made sports game.

I just finished watching this video and this is quite the curious list. I say that because of the very first game you mentioned Super Mario Land being in one of your top five best. I don't think it's that good but I do think it's a good game. It's nice to see that someone else actually really loves the game. I loved playing and growing up but it's pretty easy to me to say that Super Mario Land 2 is a massive improvement. I know wario Land is a little more slow paced but I think that game is awesome although wario Land 3 which really is an entirely different game I think it's even better

Yeah, if I were ranking my all-time favorite GameBoy games, the list would be a bit different (this was just based on a very specific group of games). Wario Land is a great game, I don't like it more than the original Mario Land, but I think it's an improvement over Mario Land 2 👍

Mario land was the first GameBoy game I played back in 1990, it holds a special place in my mind. The game has great music, it's weird and it has a lot of variety. My cousin and I used to called the GameBoy the "Little NES".

Was a great year of GameBoy coverage for sure. Absolutely adore Donkey Kong 94 and Super Mario Land so it's no surprise to me they made your favorites of the year. Also you're not alone on not being into sports, I can tolerate them but not something I have much of any interest in. When it comes to sports based games there are a handful I love, mostly NBA Jam, but they can be counted on one hand.

I'm just happy to know there is another kindred spirit out there that hates anything sportsball related. My only exceptions for sports games are mutant League football and mutant League hockey on the Genesis. Those are absolutely worth it.

The best new-to-me Game Boy game I played this year was Cave Noire. It's a pretty interesting take on the rogue-like genre. The best Game Boy game I played period was Bionic Commando, because that game is an absolute masterpiece.

Mega Man IV is one of the most underrated Game Boy games, and it's a shame- not just because it took elements from 4 and 5 and arguably made them better, but because not enough people got to hear the Wily Battle music, a track I argue is right up there with DK94's Showdown at the Tower in the "this music is so good it's hard to believe it's coming from a Game Boy" department

Yeah, that's one thing I'd say for all of the Mega Man GameBoy games: they all sound great (except Mega Man II, that one is pretty bad). The original tracks in particular for these games definitely deserve more recognition!

Great video as always, MrMatthews! Trax and Mega Man IV are both games I played through this year and thoroughly enjoyed. I played a bit of Bubble Bobble on GB and I agree with your assessment. Have you played Part 2? I really liked what I played much more and feel it was designed more with GB limitations in mind.

I've played a little bit of Bubble Bobble 2. I still have some of the same gripes about it that I had with the first one, but it seems like the zoomed-in perspective works a little better in Part 2, it doesn't feel like as much of a handicap.

After watching you talk about Donkey Kong for Gameboy previously and then procuring and playing it, I am still baffled on how people still have no idea what the game is or how great it is. Yeah, DK94 is strange. It was apparently heavily promoted by Nintendo at the time and I think it sold well enough that it got a "Best Seller" re-release. It seems to appear on most 'Top 10 GameBoy Game' lists ... and yet I didn't learn about it until well into the 2000s, and judging by the comments on these videos, it seems like a lot of people haven't heard of it. Weird how it can simultaneously be so popular and also so unknown.

This is ridiculous. I've exactly three Game boy games. So I really wanted to play Super Mario Land since it was your favorite and I never play Game boy! That is not one of the three. I have kid Dracula of all of them, Kirby's Dreamland which Scott I do believe played and bubble wobble too LOL. That being said, I'm going to make sure to get myself a copy of Super Mario Land. I don't think it's too expensive either. Thanks for another great year of Game boy and I promise to have played one on my list for 2025

For the GB my favorite game I played was Gargoyles Quest and my least favorite was Beetlejuice:HHFtN. Its not fair for Beetlejuice because these were the only 2 GB games i finished this year apparently 🤷‍♂️

Super Mario Land is the only Mario game that I know of that has Shmup levels. I would personally put Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins as one of the best Game Boy games because of the graphical upgrade and the ability to play the available worlds in any order. As for my least favorite Game Boy title, I greatly dislike Mega Man II (GB). Everything about it just plays, feels, and especially sounds wrong. I understand that Nintendo added it to Nintendo Switch Online as part of the Game Boy Mega Man series, but Mega Man II (GB) is so painful that I leave it at the bottom of the Virtual library.

LJN never made a game though, so they can't be the worst developer. As for Bubble Bobble, I enjoy the hell out of any version I own, even the GB version. The PS1 port though, hot garbage due to broken physics, and a terrible version of Rainbow Island.

Yeah, I recorded a little rant about LJN simply being a publisher, but it was a bit of an unnecessary tangent, so I cut it out to save time. It surprises me a little that there's such large number of people who still refer to LJN as a game developer.

I hope to start playing through some of the GameBoy RPGs in 2025, like Great Greed and at least one of the Final Fantasy games. Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle was one of my childhood games, too. Not a particularly great game but I have a lot of nostalgia for it
