Dan! This HAS to be one of THE best videos in a long time. I can’t think of a better video for people new to beard oil or even a seasoned beardsman, just to make sure we aren’t falling into bad habits. I never experienced the common “using bad products” issue as I just felt Like I inherently knew I needed to go online and research a bit before seeing the what the stores offered. I ABSOLUTELY however made the mistake of using WAY TOO MUCH oil AND on a dry beard my first few times. Let me tell you I was using more oil per application on a 2-3 month beard than I am now on my 8-9 inch beard. I way over used. And to top it off….on a completely dry beard. I thought for sure something was wrong with my beard and my hair and it just wasn’t gonna work right for me. So I switched to using balm only. Yes, I would dig it into my skin HARD. I thought I was doing the right thing and while it was still too greasy it felt at least a little better I thought. I wouldn’t have switched back and I wouldn’t have ever tried it on damp beard without you and this channel. So thank you. I can see this video getting huge for you with the right demographic. I mean to do it more often, but I am going to share this one out. The world needs to see this one.

What's up Dan!! It's been a minute since I've gotten time to watch a video. I think we have made these mistakes at least once. I feel I used too much oil when my beard was shorter for sure. It was a mix of things like I had no clue what I was doing and guilty as charged, when you have a nice smelling oil you think a little more might add to the longevity of the scent. Luckily I didn't buy any "cheap oil" in the beginning. I did however use cheap butter once and thats all it took lol. I was also the one that mistook using balm and had no idea what oil was till much later. I regret only one thing starting a beard. "Appreciate the process." I wish I would have paid more attention to the overall process of growing a full beard and paying more attention to the changes in each phase instead of worrying about growth. The information people have access to on your channel is definitely a game changer Dan. Awesome video. 👊

At one month of regrowth of my beard I have employed beard oil since day one I started it back with at one month started using beard butter when the hair started growing out. The oil takes care of any itch and dryness. The beard butter used passed the one month mark has made the hair feel softer as it’s growing out. Any extra oil left on my hands I rub it onto my bald head which keeps the scent longer and helps out any dryness on my head

I love the difference that quality oil makes!! I’m still learning how to work it in and get it to the skin, but it’s not really difficult! I totally agree don’t waste it on a towel wiping your hands off!! I don’t have enough to worry about after I apply it. Any that doesn’t wipe into my beard gets wiped on my face and into my hands: it feels wonderful!!! I only wish for a longer lasting scent: my sense of smell isn’t strong after decades of woodworking and sander dust! I can wholeheartedly endorse Dr Nicks!! I really like the IPA. It’s not too different from BABC Viking which is my favorite scent: pines and cedar and sage. I want to learn to make it myself!! My wife makes soap and some of the scents are great: “tobacco and bourbon” smells like a nice campfire in the deep woods! I want to make one with First Nations medicinal herbs too: juniper, sage and such!

I don't shower every day (dries out skin and depletes good bacteria) so was applying oil to a dry beard on non-shower mornings. Not sure if I should use oil if I'm not showering but my beard can use more moisture.
@DanCBearded Жыл бұрын
I would at least get your beard damp. For me, I have heard the stories and read studio about drying skin and depleting bacteria. However, I value being clean sooo much more. Especially my beard which surrounds my mouth and nose. Collects allergens, bad bacteria, food, salt, germs and many other things. Even if you do not see it or realize it. We have products developed now that replenish anything positive that is removed by showering. Often times better than what we produce naturally. To each their own, but I share this for anyone reading that was considering it. I strongly discourage taking days off from showering/washing/cleaning. Beard and body.

I have been guilty of a lot of those things starting out, applying too much, going with inferior products, etc. Thanks to your channel I have upped my beard game and feel I am more in tune with it now. One of the hicups I run into regularly is still applying too much, but let me explain. I routinely let me beard grow out for a while then trim it down so the length is changing and what works for longer does not work for the shorter version. After a trim it is not uncommon to add to much just because of habit.

My personal mistakes, outside of those mentionned in the video, would be: - Setting my heated beard brush too high (430°😬), I found that 360° was fine, but not lower (I have a very stubborn beard ahah). Takes a little longer, but it's a safer temperature for the hair - Over-straightening my beard with a heated brush. When I strated I somehow wanted my beard to be perfectly straight, which not only didn't look that good (looks too unnatural), but took a long time to get it perfect and also wouldn't take long during the day before it starts waving all over the place. I found out that if I still keep some of the natural waves, my beard would obviously lose some of the styling during the day, but it's not nearly as apparent, and sometimes I actually think it looks great. - Using too much beard butter at night. I have a dry face in general, so my beard tend to be dry when I wake up in the morning. I would put a lot of beard butter to ensure it stays hydrated during the night, which worked, but would make my beard clump together and results in tangles and knots. I now put a more reasonable amount, my beard may be a little drier in the morning, but at least it's not a mess. - Not washing my beard enough. I think we've all been guilty of this, we all heard that we shouldn't wash our hair more than a once a week or something, so we do the same with our beard. While in reality, all I needed was a gently daily wash. I don't necessarily wash my beard every day, but I don't hesitate washing it when I feel it got dirty during the day - sweat, and other dirt (I install security systems for a living, sometime on construction sites, which typically are full of dirt, drywall dust etc). - Shaving my cheeks too low. When cleaning up my cheek, I had the tendency of shaving it too low. Now I try to keep it as high as possible, makes the beard look bigger and fuller, even if I have a little patchy area on one side (used to shave below that so it makes a nice line, but found out it's better to have that little missing area than trying to hide it)

I guess I differ from both #3 and #4.. at least somewhat. For #3.. I used nothing but peanut oil on my beard/skin back in the 80's.. and added both Sweet Almond and Olive oils back in the 90's.. only things I used on my beard until a few years ago when I discovered that such a thing as beard oil existed. Those oils worked as good.. if not better.. than many of the purchased "beard oils" I've tried on my beard. As for #4.. I apply whatever oil I'm using right out of the shower to a soaking, dripping beard.. as that seems to work better for me than applying to a "damp" beard. I also apply 4 or 5 drops of thick oil to my beard after it is dry as that seems to add the finishing touch for me. Just my two pennies of course. 🙂

Posting on behalf of new and over aggressive beardsman. Less at a time is more, damp your beard after night time tooth brushing routine and put extra in then, its not all meant to be thrown in at once after morning shower. Your best amount of oil is often the least you need at any given moment. Damp vs dry may help explain some of this, you, i, and most of us know better but a little visual goes a long way and Damp is like a open scoop vs dry which wants and will take in by comparison very little, practically a shut door.

I made mistakes #2 and #4 with my first couple of full beards. Yup, it was a mess. I swear to Odin and all the bearded gods that I bought the worst beard oil in the whole world. Those beards got shaggy, somehow very dry and they looked like ol' brooms. Yuck. Can confirm: using beard oil goes better if the beard is a bit wet. And yes: investing in beard care is good. Those days of being novice about beard care are finally over. After some experiments and help from other people (including the beard guru, Mr. Dan C), I finally achieved a healthy routine. For all that, my deepest gratitude. On a side note, I recently discovered that a little trim every two-or-so months goes great (again, thanks Dan). My growth speed surpass the amount trimmed, so beard is getting steadily longer. Trimming HELPS A LOT! I'd say there's a "sacred trio" named B-B-B (Beard oil + Beard wash + Beard trimming) which keeps everything smooth and in place. Stay bearded!

My mistake... cheaper is better. I used the cheapest stuff I could find, 5$ for 2 oz, for months. I noticed a huge difference with some quality oil. It feels so much better plus I get so many compliments about how good I smell when I go out dancing. I've never gotten a compliment with body spray or cologne, but with a manly scent in the beard, I hear it all the time. Plus women always want to run their fingers through it and cheap oil just doesn't absorb in the hair as well. I wouldn't want their hands all oily feeling after letting them comb my beard with their fingers lol. I usually spend 25-35 on the good stuff now.

Just came across your channel and love your advice. I'm about 2 months into my beard growth. Not sure the length I'll grow it to yet. I have just 1 question. Should you comb or brush your beard after applying oil?
@DanCBearded10 ай бұрын
At the very beginning brush, but around your time certainly should shift to a comb. Here is a video on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIbVnnStabaGeMUsi=Zm9sPTb4Jqufl3cX And welcome to the channel!

I do not give any advice on working with those kinds of oils because of the danger involved

If most every company uses the same carrier oils does it really matter to change it up every once in awhile? Have had a beard for many decades but have not taken the beard care route til now. Thanks.
@DanCBearded Жыл бұрын
Oh man, the companies that are affiliates of mine do not have the same carriers. The industry has evolved sooo much and there are greatly unique blends!

Hi Dan... Please mention.. what ingredients should be taken into account before buying a good beard oil?

After applying oil to damp beard... next for me would be balm. Does balm go on right after oil? Wait for that damp beard to dry a bit? What is the process?
@DanCBearded Жыл бұрын
Wait 3-5 minutes before balm

Too much oil varies based on brand too. You're going to need less of thicker oils and more of thinner oils, in my experience. #6 not using Dan's discount codes for beard oil
@DanCBearded Жыл бұрын
Absolutely spot on! The amount will be different for different brands and I bet that is something we don’t think of right away. Good call Nick!

I blow dry my beard using a round brush to straighten it. My barber says I should use oil after I blow dry. Your advice is different. What should I do?
@DanCBearded Жыл бұрын
Your call man. I’m not here to argue with any barbers, but have many years of experience and research with beard care specifically. Most barbers do not.

@@DanCBearded Thanks. I've poked around some other content creators like you and have come to the conclusion that my barber is mistaken. Love your content!

I have made my share of mistakes. If you put too much oil on the hands, could you rub it on your body before the beard to reduce the amount going on the face?

Yup!

I'm probably guilty of #1- Using too much oil, especially when the scent is very mild.

Hey Dan, I know this isn’t really related to the video, but have you ever heard of Professor Edward J Fuzzworthy beard products? I saw some adds and things about them and I am interested in their products, but I can’t really find any reviews. Anyways, great vid as always man, stay bearded lol

You would advise against cyclopentaslixane, dimethiconol, dimethicone and likes in oil, right?

In oils, yes. No silicones in oils, balms, or butters
