I have a B.S. in Information Systems from the University of Baltimore. You learn some business, some programming, some network stuff, and SQL. We studied Excel and Access. Project management and business math. Plus accounting, marketing, and economics It is a well rounded degree, and you still don't know anything afterwards about technology. You need the degree and you need to get A+, Network+, Security+, Linux+, and CCNA. I would also recommend the AWS associate certificates for Solutions Architect, Developer, and SysOps. Spend some time learning how to program to, you should know how to build a full stack application. Then I would say you are at the level where you could survive in a Fortune 500 or a startup. The degree helps, but it doesn't teach you enough about technology to be useful. For that you have to supplement your education.

@sebastiancerna8653 Yes, anc congrats! Go through a recruiter or an agency. It worked great for me and was how I got hired. Help desk will teach you a lot. Or go for technical support, that is what my role is called. I support hardware and software for an application that uses AI to monitor security cameras.

I thought MIS majors would mostly be dealing with the business side of a company. Is it possible to have a role in a company that only deals with money and less with coding with an MIS degree??
@ElevateToTheUnknown
@ElevateToTheUnknown 8 ай бұрын
Absolutely! With an MIS degree, you can definitely find roles that focus more on the financial and business aspects of a company, such as business analyst, financial analyst, or systems manager, where the emphasis is more on strategic decision-making and less on coding. Many MIS graduates pursue careers that bridge the gap between IT and business, allowing for a wide range of opportunities beyond technical coding roles.

I have a question regarding college paths, I'm planning on attending Indiana University, and was wondering as someone with experience in the field how you perceive the difference between a Bachelor's in Information Systems compared to a Bachelors in Informatics + a Masters in Information Systems. I'm looking for a role in tech-related management, and these are financially going to cost the same for me. My plan is eventually find a job at an IT consulting firm or a large IT department. Indiana lacks a rigorous program with the exact "Management Information Systems" name but the coursework seems similar enough and is offered by Kelley, a pretty good business school in my state. To cut to the main question: When faced with a less prestigious and more technical Bachelor's + a Masters focused in Information Systems from a prestigious school, or a straight Bachelors in Information Systems from a prestigious school, which do you think offers better chances for my desired career?
@Cwhp
@Cwhp Ай бұрын
In immediate retrospect this may be a dumb question, I suspect the masters and technical experience trumps the bachelors route. The only difference would be an added year to my studies.
@ElevateToTheUnknown
@ElevateToTheUnknown Ай бұрын
Here’s how I see it: If you’re aiming for IT consulting or a tech management role, both paths have strengths, but each gives you a different edge. Bachelor’s in Information Systems from Kelley - This is a direct, efficient route. Kelley’s got a strong name, and a straight bachelor’s in IS could get you right into entry-level consulting or IT management positions. The reputation of Kelley’s program will definitely help open doors, and you’ll be hitting the ground running without needing to invest extra time in school. Faster ROI since you’re diving into real-world experience sooner. Bachelor’s in Informatics + Master’s in Information Systems - Now, if you go this route, you’re adding more technical depth with that informatics background plus a specialized IS master’s. This combo can make you stand out in more competitive roles where deeper technical expertise is valued. It can also set you up for mid-level roles or put you on track for faster growth, especially in tech consulting firms that value a mix of management and technical skills. So, which one’s better? If you want to get into tech management and start working sooner, a bachelor’s in Information Systems from Kelley is a smart choice. But, if you’re cool with spending a little more time in school to gain that added expertise, then the bachelor’s + master’s combo could give you an extra edge, especially for technical consulting or senior management roles in larger IT departments. Both are great options, so choose the one that aligns with your timeline and career goals. Either way, you’re setting yourself up well!

If you want to work in IT, an MIS (Management Information Systems) degree is a better choice. MIS combines business and technology, preparing you for roles like IT analyst, business systems manager, or even cybersecurity. A Business Science degree is broader and may lead to general business roles but lacks the tech-specific focus. Go with MIS if you’re aiming for IT-focused roles-it offers more relevant skills for the tech industry.
