Hi Tony, I've been watching your videos for a while, and learned a lot. They're packed with a ton of helpful information. Thank you so much. You don't upload a lot of video recently, do you? I caught fish on all 4 of your spoon types, but the Krocodile spoons, which seem to sink very fast. What is right method to fish the Krocodile?
@tonysspotonfishing3 жыл бұрын
We apologize for taking so long to reply. With so many seasons of Spot On Fishing on our channel, it’s hard to keep up on all the comments and questions. As much as we try to do our best, we miss some now and then. We always try and sweep back through the comment sections and reply to any that may have been missed. We are so happy to hear you’ve caught fish on those spoons! If you have some fish pics you’d like to share, please feel free to share them to our Facebook page. The Krocodile spoons do sink quicker. They have a tighter wobble so when they fall in the water column, it doesn’t have a wide flutter to it. We can fish these spoons the same as the others. Straight retrieve, stop and go and even jig them. We do retrieve them a hair quicker then the other spoons just to keep them at the depth of water we want to fish. Thank you so much for watching! We truly appreciate it! Again, we sincerely apologize for the delayed reply.

Just bought the moonshine & the K O after watching this. A lot of ppl use red krocodiles in the saltwater (NCal) Ive had real good luck with the Kroc spoon that is neon hot pink. I think it has a faint scale pattern on it, anyway when its dark out or we are trolling saltwater down deep, this brought in a couple big ones when nothing else triggered a bite.

P-Line Pro Steel Spoons and Pen-Tac B.C. Steel Spoons are probably the most popular spoons over here in the Pacific Northwest when it comes to casting and fishing in the rivers, very similar to Lil' Cleo but thump a little harder, and come rigged correctly with a siwash and swivel

Great choices! It’s king season ! Green glo in any spoon is the only color I’d use if I had to pick one. Lately here in Milwaukee 2/5 Cleo and 3/4 kastmaster have been money. In the past week my bro caught a 38” king(2/5 Cleo) and I landed a 39” brown on a 3/4 kastmaster green gold. It’s great that weather, time of day and water conditions have much less of an impact on fishing when the big ones return. Just get out there and fish!

I guess the spoon can be a good color ,I use Cleo's a lot ,this one is whiteand blue , the blue and chrome would be best but one trick I use if the spoon isn't the right color ,I put a piece of silver prisum tape on it and it gives of a lot of flash , especially near sun set. There's lots of spoons out there but the ones you named are a good core and you probably don't need more . There are some but they're too light to cast ,they are for trolling . But I've actually seen this work where people couldn';t buy a hit but put the tape on ,it's a different ball game.
@tonysspotonfishing4 жыл бұрын

how to do you "jig" a spoon? for example how long do you typically let it sink before pulling up your rod?
@tonysspotonfishing3 жыл бұрын
Sorry it’s taken 8 months to reply. With all the videos in our catalog it can be a full time job just to keep up with questions and comments but we always try to catch up on some that we have missed. When jigging a spoon it can very. Most spoons fall about a foot per second. Some, like the Krocodile spoon, falls much quicker, maybe 2 feet per second as it doesn’t have a wider wobble on the fall like a KO or Cleo. If we are working suspended fish, for example say we know they’re 8’ below the surface, we can count the 8 seconds to get the spoon at that level and then start our retrieve. If the fish are near the bottom we can bounce it off the bottom or try to keep it about a foot off the bottom. Now when we are jigging a spoon we sweep the rod tip up and let the spoon fall on a tight line so we can feel any bites on the fall. Even those giant Kings can hit so light sometimes while jigging. They will also smash it, don’t get me wrong but having tension on the line as the spoon falls insures we won’t miss a bite. Usually we only let the spoon fall 1-3seconds. The fish will tell you how they want it that day. The cadence can also change daily and sometimes hourly. Thanks so much for watching and thanks for the great question!

Tony, love the videos. Been out at Belmont and Montrose quite a bit this year but have stumbled upon a recent cold streak. Need something to change my luck. What are your thoughts on the fishing this week? Looks like the weather is calling for a couple of days of rain, West winds, and a full moon. Do you see those as positive fishing indicators? Also, is there a specific time of the day that you catch a majority of your salmon?
@tonysspotonfishing7 жыл бұрын
Quinn Ferguson West winds will be crucial to cool Lake Michigan water temps quickly. I feel the full moon should bring the next and more then likely last good wave of Kings in, providing the water temps drop. I think we'll be ok. I also look at the solar/lunar charts and look at peak times or the major activity windows. That has always been when I've caught most of my Chicago Kings. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Good luck fishing! If you get out this weekend let us know how you do. We are planning on filming downtown (weather permitting) next week for another salmon show.

Slide_ways unfortunately you won’t get any casting distance that we need while throwing Spoons for Kings. Trolling spoons are very light and meant to just be released boat side and let line out to troll, mostly attached to a down rigger to achieve the depth needed for summer Salmonoids.

Ronald Grospe Belmont, Diversey and Burnham are great choices down town. You can fish both lake side and inside the harbor. There will be anglers at these harbors too, but no where near the amount that fish Montrose. The free parking at Montrose is why everyone shows up there. I would stay away from Burnham on Sundays when the Bears are playing. It can get pretty crazy then at Burnham. Good luck and catch a King for us! Let us know how you do.

Spot on Fishing thanks the quick reply!! now I have 15 lb fluro but was thinking of going with braided line with a leader. Any tips?
@tonysspotonfishing7 жыл бұрын
Ronald Grospe If you have your heart set on braid, then I would highly recommend a fluorocarbon leader or at least a mono leader. The last few years I have gone to just running mono with much greater success rate. Both hook up ratio and fish landed ratio has been way better with Mono. As much as we talk about the Kings striking as a reaction strike and not to feed, they do get line shy. If you want to run pure fluorocarbon there are some down sides to it. The memory of fluorocarbon can cut down on casting distance and abrasion resistance can become an issue. I use Fluorocarbon quite a bit fishing smallies down town and usually my line of choice is Segaur Invis-X. I had to switch to Abrais-X. Those rocks at the base of the walls can destroy line quick. I had ran Invis-X as a leader to braid a few years back and had a King run straight down at the wall and broke me off on the rocks. Triline Big Game, P-Line CXX and Bass Pro Excel mono have been the best lines I've found.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Trying to catch up this week on some questions and comments we may have missed. Sadly, it is true how quickly they need to be hit with a light but it’s hard to to knock the bait too hard when it does catch fish. To be honest and by no means does Acme tackle sponsor us, we catch more Kings and any other Salmonoid on the KO over the Moonshine Spoons that hold their charge extremely long and when they first start glowing I think you could see them from outer space LOL! Personally I’m not sold on brighter the better but would love to see the brightness of a KO when first hit with a flasher, to keep that charge longer. Jordan Castaneda We haven’t heard much about Waukegan this year for shore anglers. Those in a boat just off shore have been catching some fish. We have had some shore reports from Sheboygan, Racine and Milwaukee. Around the full moon earlier this month, when we had a few days of western winds, southern WI had some fish caught from shore as well as Chicago. The last few years it’s seemed that Waukegan has had some “windows” for a lack of better terminology, where it’s been really good numbers when many of the other harbors have quieted down. Hopefully we get 3-5 days of west winds here soon to really get this run going!

Felipe Talavera With the eastern winds the water warmed up pretty quick and high. Really shut down the salmon run. With west winds in the forcast and another full moon coming I believe we will see one last run of Kings in the City. I fish primarily Diversey and Burnham Harbors. Any of our salmon shows for Spot On Fishing were filmed at Diversey Harbor. I usually fish around the times of the major and minor windows of the solar/lunar charts. Great for Kings and the bigger Browns. For the Coho, the 3/4oz spoons work great and for crankbaits we run the wiggle wart, hot n tot and the jointed Shad rap. Do you cast these spoons near rivers or anywhere along shore?
@tonysspotonfishing7 жыл бұрын
1zzyp Along shore at the lake front on Lake Michigan for sure. Rivers, they have to have a little depth to them being 3/4oz. If you are fishing the Root River for example, you would be better off drifting spawn but if you wanted to throw a spoon yoh may want to go to the 1/2oz size just tp cut down on snags.
@SmallTackleboxFishing7 жыл бұрын
Are Len Thompsons or Daredevilles okay as well?
@tonysspotonfishing7 жыл бұрын
Small Tacklebox Fishing Thompson spoons and traditional daredevils have quite a bit of lift to them. They'll run quite high in the water column and to run those spoons with enough weight to keep them down they would be too big over all. Daredevil at one time had two spoons that would work, the CopyCat and Devil Dog. CopyCat resembled a Crocodile Spoon and the Devil Dog resembles a Little Cleo. It's hard these day to find those spoons.
@tomhuynh75567 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with this technique. So, to cast spoon from a river bank, I just throw a spoon out. Then wait until it hit bottom then retrieve it? If it is, I will get a lot of snags along the way and could loose my spoon. Could you or someone explain it? Thanks
@tonysspotonfishing7 жыл бұрын
tom huynh Spoons have a little lift to them as you start to retrieve them. Not much but some. If you are in a rocky area you can use a lighter weight spoon to cut down on snags. If you have timber or brush it can be tough to get any spoon through that. In areas like that don't let the spoon fall completely to the bottom. A quicker retrieve can also help keep the spoon out of snags.
@tlownsoutsdoors9287 жыл бұрын
What about daredevil spoons?
@tonysspotonfishing7 жыл бұрын
Tlowns Outsdoors The Daredevil that would work the best is the Cop-E-Cat. Traditional Daredevils have a lot of lift to them and when casting from the shore tend to ride a little to high in the water column. We have used the Moonshine spoons, in the traditional Daredevil style and have done well on Steelhead. I personally shy away from them for Kings. Have you had success with a traditional Daredevil spoon for Kings? Nothing wrong if we can add another spoon to our arsenal.
@tlownsoutsdoors9287 жыл бұрын
Spot on Fishing I just started casting spoons this fall so I personally haven't caught anything on any daredevils. I was just wondering if they too would be a spoon to consider..
@tonysspotonfishing7 жыл бұрын
Tlowns Outsdoors The Daredevils are excellent spoons for Pike and are used quite frequently up on the Canadian Shield Lakes for Lake Trout. Smaller sizes will work around here for a few species like bass and crappies even the inland trout. Its been a rough King Salmon season this year. What should've been a great run became hit or miss with the weather and water temps and weird wind patterns. There are still some fish around and the secondary school of kings have come in. Numbers aren't great but there are some fish to be caught. The good news on Lake Michigan is the Steelhead and Brown Trout will be shallow and start getting active soon. As the weather and water temps cool it'll just keep getting better.
@fishkasoutdoors77597 жыл бұрын
How deep and how do you retrieve it
@tonysspotonfishing7 жыл бұрын
Fishkas Outdoors You have to try all levels of the water column. Count it down various depths and try slow and steady retrieves, stop and go, speed it up. Remember what you were doing that cast when you get a strike so you can repeat it. There's no text book answer, it can change day to day or hour to hour even.

What's a good depth to start at
@tonysspotonfishing7 жыл бұрын
Fishkas Outdoors I usually start at the bottom and work my way up in thr water column. But if you prefer to start shallow and work down that is fine too. The key if finding the level and retrieve they want. No real right or wrong answer

Braid is best but tie a fluorocarbon top shot out cast mono plus way better hook set
@tonysspotonfishing6 жыл бұрын
Ian Wagner Hi Ian, thank you so much for watching and thank you for commenting. Braid in salmon fishing, even with fluorocarbon leaders, has its pros and cons. Better castability (especially in windy conditions) and superb abrasion resistance on the rocks on the bases of the wall. The downside to it is how many fish are lost in a given season because of zero stretch, even with a fluorocarbon leader. Fluorocarbon itself is not no stretch like braid but it has far less stretch then mono. Because of the mouth structure of a king or any of the other salmonoids, we’ll never get full penetration with our hooks like we do with just about any other game fish. Those hooks are usually planted on the back side of the gum line or most often, in the, for lack of a better term, soft tissue in the roof of the mouth or sides of the mouth. With having no stretch lines the risk of those hook ripping out is greatly increased. Now in Racine or Kenosha where catching limits of Kings happens frequently, it’s not a big deal. For guys fishing strictly Chicago, where a fish is a good night and anything more then one is a miracle these days...it becomes a bigger issue. Hence why we recommend strictly running mono for these fish. Thanks again for watching! We truly appreciate it!

Do you know some good spot (adress) for parking?

Ivan Glos The main harbors I focus on are Burnham, Diversey and Montrose. You can buy a fisherman's pass from Henry's to get cheeper (but limited spots) to park at Burnham. Otherwise their is the meters on the street or the pay lot by the Planetarium. Burnham is located behind Soldier Field. Diversey has free parking on the street but a very far walk if you do that. The pay lot is much closer and easier to carry gear down to the lake front from. It is located just off the Fullerton exit from Lake Shore Dr. Montrose is totally free parking but because of that gets a lot of fishing pressure. Expect the most crowds there. It is located just off of the Montrose exit of Lake Shore Dr.

They're in waukegan already, but dead and floating in the harbour...

muuce Waukegan had a good early run this year. Water temps dropped nicely there. The first wave to come in was a good strong run. Still some Kings staging in 50 feet of water. I'm expecting one more wave of fish to come in. Fish in Kenosha picked back up. With the nw winds coming we should see a few more in Waukegan and many more in Chicago!

Spot on Fishing thanks for replying! You think spending time at Burnham at this point would be a waste of time? This is my first season doing salmon and after seeing the floaters in Waukegan I have little hope for Chicago. But what do I know

muuce I would wait a few days. The cooler weather will help and a day or two of w and/or nw winds will cool the water down too. Don't lose faith yet my friend. We have one more shot at the Kings in Chicago. Should turn around soon.
