Craziest thing about Thor killing Kratos at the start of Ragnarok is that if he didn't do that Kratos would likely have ended up in Valhalla. Which likely would have resulted in Kratos destroying everything there and ending the game hours early.

Baldur's Gate II's Throne of Bhaal expansion has a subversion of this trope that's hilarious. At one point, you come across a party of Level 1 adventurers (very much like your party at the start of the first game) who you can send on a quest to kill some low-level monsters for a small fee. When they return to you for payment, the party will decide to take you on and instantly get slaughtered by you. Suddenly, the low-level adventurers reload their save from before they attacked you and simply accept their fee before continuing on their way. Brilliant stroke on Bioware's part.

You end up falling, and the game basically says, “Hope you saved your progress, because you dun goofed!” But then Guybrush literally bounces OVER the “game over” screen and just says, “Rubber tree.” iirc, this was one of the ways the devs were poking fun of how frustratingly hard the King’s Quests games were, and I love it!!!

A "recent" favorite of mine actually comes from the Doom 2 mod "My House." When you die at any point in the game, if you wait around 2 minutes, you'll wake up in a hospital. Exploring this place will eventually lead you to a medkit on the wall, and interacting with it will place you back where you were when you died with full health. While this can only be done once, this effectively makes all deaths in this mod fake game overs.

The Thor fake out reminds of Dead Cells, which does the same thing in the Queen and the Sea DLC. Unlike GoW, this one is unscripted, and happens if you die to the titular queen without doing enough damage to her. The regular death cutscene will start to play, until she interrupts it, pulls you over to her, tells you to give her a real fight and revives you. What makes this stand out though is not just the fact that she revives you, but that she even sacrifices a chunk of her own HP to do it!

One fake Game Over which I absolutely love is the "ending" of the Hero Story in WWE 12. At WrestleMania, you team up with Triple H to take on Kevin Nash, who is leading a WCW invasion, and Rey Mysterio, who is your former mentor who turned his back on you, in a WWE vs WCW loser leaves town match. You lose the match due to shenanigans and WWE is no more, you failed. Then the credits start playing with Kevin Nash's music and you think you just caused the WWE to end but then Nash cuts out the credits with a promo in the WCW Nitro arena, which has replaced WWE Monday Night RAW, and you continue until the end of the game like that. Masterpiece.

my favorite fake game over (That technically counts, if you squint) comes from Control. Right after what is arguably the best section of the game, you come across the Hedron, the object that is the source of the equipment that is protecting people from the thing that is turning people into the monsters you are fighting. The Hedron is also the entity that has been helping the protagonist, Jesse Faden, for the last several years. After a sequence where you work to protect The Hedron from enemies, it breaks and Jesse succumbs to the effects. The game goes so far as to roll credits before they begin to get distorted until you are back in control of Jesse and she gets some character growth and go through the finale.

You walk around a little only to suddenly have the floor collapse under you. You get a 'game over' message which is quite the shocker, since there was no failure state up to this point. Then guybrush suddenly flies back up, because a 'rubber tree' was conveniently placed under him, and catapulted him back up. You later use that rubber tree to catapult some rock. I don’t know many of these. Probably the only one I really encountered was the one from Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space - Episode 3: Night of the Raving Dead. The episode starts with Sam and Max in an inescapable situation, before having us go through a flashback sequence that leads up to that point. Once you get there… the characters are killed - and depending on which version you’re playing, you get a Game Over screen that’s a reference to a different series. Afterwards, the game continues but with Sam and Max as zombies who must recover their souls.

Hotel Dusk is an absolute hidden gem of a VN on the DS and one of my favourite parts of this game is the amount of specific game overs you can get for doing stupid shit. Show someone something you stole from there room? You get kicked out of the hotel Game Over! Ask someone a private question about something you could only know about by trespassing in their room? Kicked out Game Over! Harass other Guests and Employees? Game over! All of these with unique dialogue for each one, I like to save often and see how many ways I can ruin everything. My favourite one is where by lying to a guest at one point he’ll get upset and Leave the hotel. The owner comes along and it starts playing the game over music as if he’s about to kick you out, BUT THEN he goes “Ah fuck that guy let’s get a drink” and the two of you get so shitfaced and hungover your unable to solve the mystery in time lmao. I personally think the absolute peak of fake game overs came from Bravely Default 2. The Bravely series has done all kinds of tricks with the title screen, save data, game mechanics and so on, and Bravely Second did a pretty impressive one with putting the game in a fail state that unlocks New Game + and allows you to break continuity by activating a mechanic in the hopeless boss fight during the intro, which you didn't have on the first go, and change the entire course of the game for the second go around. Bravely Default 2, however, has you hit two separate bad endings as game overs and then continue with the reveal that that's a premonition from the book you save your game data in and you can't do things the way you were planning because it'll kill one of your party and emotionally devastate the rest - only to proceed by *allowing you to delete the villain's previously hidden save file and erase the soul jar they've been using to instantly recover from your defeating them*. And then you go on to kick their ass properly without their backup.

Not exactly a fake game over, but Rune Factory 4 has a fake ending credits sequence that implies the player character is going to sacrifice themself for the greater good, only for your dragon god friend to come to your rescue and gets upset you tried to sacrifice yourself. The mobile game Honkai Impact 3rd has a fake game over though. In main story part 1.5, when Fu Hua is fighting the almighty being "Sa", there's an instant kill attack that the game tries to trick you into thinking you had some way to stop, as it gives you a fake mission failed screen (as the mission failed screen how that mobile game HI3rd handles it's "gameovers"), that appears real if you aren't fully paying attention, but soon after that the fake gameover is overwritten (I do not remember how or who does it) and Fu Hua (as she's substituting for the main protag Kiana Kaslana since Kiana is occupied being a literal goddess who cannot go back to Earth for lore reasons) is able to bounce back from death.
