Being awkward and sixteen, I made a point to come up to him afterward just to say how much I liked that one tune. Vic is not only one of the most revolutionary musicians of all time, but he is one of the most humble, down to earth and kind folks you’ll have the pleasure to meet. Story time: Some friends and I went to see the Wooten family band during the Soul Circus tour when we were 14, and one of our parents was supposed to pick us up after the show since we couldn’t drive ourselves. The parent was late, and we were the last people in the venue. Vic saw us kids standing there while packing up his stuff and jumped down off the stage to talk to us. After about ten minutes, the fire alarm goes off, so we have to leave the venue. Anybody else would have said goodbye and gone to hang out in the tour bus until they could finish packing up. Not Vic. He stood out front of the Madison in Covington, KY for over an hour just shooting the breeze until our ride arrived. He even saw us off into the car, and said hello to my friend’s dad before we left.

Here's an idea for a series. Give us a short history lesson on a famous bassist. Talk about what techniques they use in the song. Maybe even talk about how they fit in with and complement the other instruments. It's a bit more work than just learning a bassline, but it's something nobody else is doing, as far as I'm aware. It would be really cool to see some punk, funk, rock & metal over the course of the series. You don't have to do them all at once, just have it as an ongoing series between your other stuff.

Back when I was spending some time in Tennesee with my mom, she worked at a small bar called the Fillin' Station in Kingston Springs.
