I know a few guys who have been done this and regretted it. One of them married a girl from either Russia or the Ukraine. Gorgeous woman. He married her, brought her home, and within two months she was calling the police and claiming domestic violence. I guess there is a law that states that if a person from another country marries a US citizen, they have to be together for a certain amount of time before they themselves become a citizen, unless domestic is involved. If there is domestic violence (and it can be proven), she can leave you, and her citizenship is not jeopardized.

Its still risky, but less than "traditional marriage" 62% of the marriages between swedish men and Swedish women ends in divorce (or 60-something, idk) while only 18% of the marriages between swedish men and mail order brides does. Still one out of every 5, but much less risky.

Divorce is probably the best thing if two people are a mismatch. People grow apart. It isn't happily ever after for everyone. Some people are just not compatible. It gets worse when domestic violence enters the picture. People cannot be forced to remain in that kind of relationship. Divorce would be the best in that case. Thankfully, the laws don't favor your really creepy backwards thinking. If you're with someone that is taking all of your money, you needed to see the light much earlier in the relationship. My band played at an arranged wedding between a Ukrainian girl, who was actually quite pretty, and an over weight middle age man. It was actually quite sad, she did not seem happy, and the entire wedding and following reception she basically stood in a corner with three other women. The men were all drinking at the bar and she went outside where we were taking a break. I asked her if she was ok, she looked worried and a bit pale. She said she had only met the guy three days prior to the wedding that he had already set up and basically pushed her to sign the wedding license. My band mates and I were really stunned, but we were just hired to play the gig and even though one of our guys told her to just leave, we really just wanted to finish the gig and leave a very uncomfortable situation. I read in the paper about a month later the marriage was annulled, and heard from an acquaintance who set up the gig she had said the guy lied to her for two years about everything from how much money he made, his job and even his looks. Poor girl, I hope she’s back in the Ukraine and is happy.

When I met my future husband he wasn’t working. He actually didn’t work the first 2 months we were together. I was working minimum wage at Michael’s. I’d give him money every 2 weeks to help drive me to work. I didn’t have a vehicle. I was 19 when I met him. He was my second boyfriend. He’s also not tall or overly attractive. We have 3 children. In Canada there are immigration laws that protect you from scams like that, if they leaves you they can be deported if they leave before the legal date is up. If you decide to break it off before the legal date, they get deported. They must remain married to you up to a year to gain status otherwise, immigration will see it as breaking the law and send them away at which point they now have to try again.
