Certainly no one is here to dispute that Japanese are making some of the best cars out here. That is not the point. I have owned many Honda's. Honda has always made great engines. They are a small engine company first and foremost. My 1981 civic ran until the body frame rusted away. I hated letting that car go because it ran so well. Fast forward to today I have the 2004 Honda Element. It tops the list of reliable Small Suv's and it does not rust out like the old cars did. But no body has ever said America has inferior steel to any country.

I maintain my own vehicles and do all my own repairs with the exception of trans repair/rebuilds. I've done typical high mileage repairs like ball joints, front wheel hubs, 1 sway bar link, 2 new calipers, rotors and I swapped rear ends to a G80 locking diff to rid myself of one wheel peel and because I tow my bass boat a lot throughout the year.

One problem with only looking at mileage is that it does not take into account what the vehicle was used for. It is always possible that lower mileage vehicles are owned by people who do not use the vehicle extensively. I would like to see age taken into account. Stop-start is a major factor in engine wear so age is an issue even if the mileage is relatively low. Non-the-less the data is very interesting as it shows the dominance of Japanese vehicles in the area of reliable well, built vehicles.

The v8 in them already has several 1 MIL mile examples. Same engine used in the land cruiser, sequoia, 4th gen (03-09) 4runner, Tundra. Those v8s are the BEST and most reliable v8s in the WORLD!

Man, I'm trying to decide between an 07 highlander, or an 08 honda pilot, Ive had two toyota tundra, an 2012 I bought now and ran it to 200,000 near trouble fee miles, and currently have a 2016 with 250,000 miles, so I know toyota reliability, havent had a honda since I was right out of highschool, but it was in integra with a manual transmission, and as beat up as that car got, it just kept going, I kinda like the roominess of the pilot a little more but scared of it not being as reliable as the highlander.

If you go with a Lexus or with a Acura I suggest having an extra 2-3K in case something finally kicks the bucket, even tho they are old it is still a “luxury” vehicle and parts are not cheap. Also I’m sure it’s probably only Premium fuel so plan to spend an extra 10-15$ more than usual. Learn from my mistake. 04 Acura TL 😅 great car! but premium fuel here is about 30 cents more than regular and having a heavy foot don’t help much. But BOY ARE THEY FUN TO DRIVE!

I have a 2012 Ford Escape xlt limited 2.5 4cyl w 6speed automatic AWD model. It's currently 100% original at 171k except for a $40 throttle body at 163k. Regular Fluid and filter changes, brake pads, tires, windshield wipers, a few light bulbs. That's it. Never even a single check engine light it's entire life. It still had it's original front brake rotors until 167k. Still has never had an alignment since new and my tires wear so evenly that I dont get the slightest pulse or shake or vibration until the tires are going bald. Then you can finally tell the alignment isn't perfect anymore. Put on new tires and forget all about the alignment for 40k cause you just cant tell if the tires arent almost bald. Changed 100% of the original factory transmission fluid and filter at 7 years old and 151k and it was "barely dirty at all" said the shop and I could have waited till 200k. Every year when I get it inspected I wait to hear the bad news that it finally needs a part since about 130k, still waiting at 171k. Oh and I also thought I should mention that the second set of rear tires I ever put on the car at 90k are still on there and will pass inspection one more time. My Escape needs rear tires every 90k and front tires every 40k but it varies in the front as I dont always buy the exact same tires, some last longer than others. At 171k I get 26mpg highway @ 55mph. I get 21.5mpg city with a pretty good amount of idling. I'm finally going to have to start replacing the shocks and struts and finally get an alignment soon as I noticed the other day its finally starting to wear out. Took a job in a town where the roads are kinda bad and it took a toll on the suspension. Amazingly cant find anything else wrong. Just worn shock n struts. I would definitely recommend a 4cyl escape as a reliable and long lasting vehicle. Only time will tell how long it will go. It's too new to find many other examples of. Hope this helps someone looking for a good small used suv.
