100% on the small dual sports. I started on a TW200 and the ease of riding it got me into riding dirt. I now ride a WR250R as my riding has progressed and while there are lighter, more powerful, and faster dirt bikes, I find that the low maintenance and street capability make for a great all-arounder for my riding style.

4th bike was a Grom. I use it to practice for racing because I can't always get to the track. I go to an empty parking lot and drag knee, slide it around, learning to wheelie. I even converted it to GP shift so I could practice when I made the change on my race bike. It made a HUGE difference for me. It's such a great tool.

I learned on my Dad's 1989 TW200 that wasn't in good condition. It really humbled me with the kick start (My dad refused to buy me a battery for electric start), drum brakes, and a max speed of 65mph. He also insisted on teaching me in the dirt because it's better to learn in hard difficulty and then go to a new shiny bike on the easy asphalt.

First off, just bought a rokform mount with your code, thanks dude! Second, as a 5’2 and 120lbs woman, I am so glad I chose a yamaha xt250 as my first bike! I was able to find a dualsport and tall enough boots to make it work for me! Paired with leaning on one foot, I’ve learned so much on the road and off the road and I think I’ve progressed rather quickly because of the steep rocky trails, muddy conditions, and brooks that I ride it through!

A dirt bike is the perfect platform to learn basic motorcycle controls, and riding off road is much more forgiving when you mess up. My first off-road bike was an old Suzuki 100, and my first street legal bike was a Suzuki s40 aka Savage ls650. The ls650 was a small and lightweight bike, which was about the size of a 250cc, but it had plenty of power thanks to that 40ci thumper. 😁

This is the actual best channel for new riders, by a mile. Yam tells you the truth about riding instead of telling you that you need to spend $3000 on top of the line gear and master advanced riding techniques before you ever leave the parking lot or your going to instantaneously get mowed over in traffic. I think too many beginner oriented channels exaggerate a lot to make it seem like there’s this huge bar of entry to ride a motorcycle when it’s really not that extreme or complicated.

If you get a minibike you can also do Mini GP. Where you'll be able to get all but the speed part of a track day. Cornering, lean, trail braking, line selection. For a fraction of the price. Mini GP will teach you so much for such a low risk. Did you lowside? More often than not all that will be damaged is your pride, so dust your self off and get back on it.

For those with no prior experience, e-bikes-especially the moped-style ones that can reach speeds of 35 mph and above-provide a wonderful gateway for navigating city streets. They help alleviate fears about riding on two wheels in a low-stakes environment. Without the need to manage a clutch, riders can concentrate on building their awareness and confidence. By the time I transitioned to a motorcycle, I had logged thousands of miles on e-bikes, which made adapting to a clutch feel seamless. My initial fear wasn’t about the clutch or the bike itself, but rather the challenge of riding in traffic and adjusting to higher speeds.

For sure, I was a bicyclist commuting to work/school for a couple of years (after a few years experience driving a car already) and it made all the difference when I got on two wheels. These days, I find two-wheelers to be the more manageable way to get around unless I really need to haul stuff or passengers. The only two things is ATGATT and rain - those constraints keep me thinking of how to overcome all the limitations of cars which include severely reduced visibility / awareness of surroundings from the driver's seat, the much greater mechanical forces involved in piloting something ~10 times heavier than a bike, the fuel consumption, tons more possible mechanical / maintenance issues compared to a bike, overall cost of ownership (purchase, insurance, maintenance), and the fact that even getting around in a metal cage doesn't guarantee total safety from injury or death in a - not to mention all the blunders of semi-autonomous driving, inflated confidence of novice drivers, and distracted drivers who are too comfortable with multitasking from their wheelborne armchairs. Motorcycling is a different set of risks, but there's just something about how SUVs are trending over sedans that make you really think about how unsafe getting on the road really is anyhow. I think any rider who trains their abilities, takes precautions, maintains their bike plus safety apparel, stays aware of their surroundings, and operates their two-wheeler within the limits of their own riding abilities (and the bike's capabilities) is often much better off than car drivers. I say all this because being a bicyclist in traffic is so much worse than a motorcycle - you have all the disadvantages of being completely exposed, not being able to wear much safety gear since it affects your bicycling ability, being even less visible (small and silent) than a motorcycle, and limited to the power of your athletic ability to get yourself out of a bad situation. After gaining road sense as a bicyclist, motorcycling actually lets me wear better safety gear, use things like rear view mirrors and turn signals, and be a little more visible with engine noise, headlights, and tail lights. I'm not saying that anybody just starting out their driving career will gain all the advantages of motorcycling immediately. My journey started out with driving a car, then downgrading to a bicycle for years, and then finally getting back to motorized transportation by upgrading to a motorcycle. If you don't cultivate humility (and physical abilities for two wheeled vehicles starting with a bicycle) before getting on a motorcycle as a primary mode of transportation, you will end up in a tragedy. Anyhow, life is risky, operating any vehicle is risky... but the worst case scenarios regardless of which vehicle you abuse (or get into a bad situation because of someone else's abuse of theirs) is all pretty bad. A pickup truck will just as easily kill another pickup truck driver as it would a motorcyclist, if an impact is destined. Someone can just easily go off a cliff whether they low-side their bike or they are cornering too aggressively with their car. Motorcyclists do face the additional requirements to balance their vehicles upright, and perhaps deal with a much greater power to weight ratio, but again, that is up to each rider to learn about their own body, select an appropriate bike, practice their controls to develop greater abilities, and very wisely apply those abilities within the limits they have set for themselves in general and the limits that each riding situation presents. All life is precious, any activity can end badly, and we all should try to reduce any risk that we become aware of.

I started on a 400 Ninja, and have made my way to the Suzuki 8R. Feel like it's been a great progression, but in time I'd like to advance to a Busa more for the comfort and touring abilities vs speed. Of course, there is also the GSX1000GT which also would probably fit as well. (I have been considering either as a used Busa and a New GT are about the same price) There are days where I just don't want to go home, but my keister says other wise. So looking for something with a bit more long-term ridability and maybe something I can take a weekend trip on to say Tail of the Dragon. I'm glad I learned on a underpowered 400 NInja. It was bullet proof, and it was a easy bike to flick around and get comfortable on. There are a few weak spots to the bike like riding position be so straight up for a sport bike, and the windscreen just shoving air at your chest, but you can learn to live with it. It just means the first time you hit 70mph on a bike, you really FEEL it. And the first time you make that rookie mistake of dumping the clutch with too much throttle, your not going to loop it. Having one equipped with ABS is nice too. I think I only really felt the ABS engage once or twice the entire time I owned it. However, on my 8R I did find the ABS may have made the accident I was in less violent. Thankfully I was able to still steer a bit while locking the brakes down to try and avoid a car turning into the side of me. Had I been going faster, I would have been thrown from the bike. Had I not had ABS I would have went wheel into the door or fender and chucked over the handle bars. Instead I was just slowed down and slowly knocked over. (although I'll admit, at that time frame, death would have been a welcome release)

Smaller bikes are more forgiving around rider mistakes. Remember that the first times learning the controls, everyone is a little nervous about what they're doing. A single mistake is easier to recover on a low hp, low weight bike. Once you're getting comfortable and feel the need for new experiences, you can easily go a step further. And going step by step is a great way to gain experience.

My real first bike is a 2009 Kawasaki ER-6F (no ABS), but I'm cheating a bit, since I went to motocross camps as a child and early teenager, where I would ride 50cc, 80cc and 125cc dual sports bikes and even 90cc quads (relative to age, size and skill) on dirt tracks, off-road and a bit on the road to get to and from riding spots. Learned a lot from these experiences, and when I went to get my A2 license in June of this year having not ridden for 21 years - due to my father being unalived riding to get himself to work and my mom too scared to even think of letting my brother or I get too close to a bike - I was quite nervous at first but those skills that were embedded in my brain and body at a young age came back surprisingly quick. I'm grateful I now own the bike I do, because it's old enough so that ABS wasn't very common and was a huge premium (meaning I got this no ABS one for quite cheap) but recent enough so that the parallel twin is actually quite good and versatile. I learned a lot this summer riding it and plan on keeping on learning this winter. I live in Southern-East France, so it's quite okay riding in the winter, just get warm clothes and gear and bring some waterproof overalls in the top case and you're all good. Won't be riding too high up in the mountains though. All that to say, I love my middleweight sporty roadster with fairing ^^ (Oh and, by law, I had to have it clamped to 32.5hp [yeah older bike so the clamping kit is made for the older rule that has now been bumped up to 47.5hp] instead of it's original 72hp, I think it's a good way to learn and not too bad since the bike is "only" 184kg [405.6lbs] dry. Can't wait to get rid of the clamp though xD Only (a bit more than) one and a half year to wait until I can get my full A license)

It makes sense in the US, where getting a motorcycle license isn't as elaborate as in the EU. In Denmark a bike in the cb500 to the sv650 caterory is considered i beginner bike if you a in the A category. If you 18 you can only ride a 125cc with 15 hp when you are 20 can upgrade to A2 48hp 2 years later you can upgrade to full size. If you are 24 you go strait to the A category.

i have a bluroc heritage 50. its a 50cc dax rippoff but damn right i love that thing. i can ride whenever i want. thing is....... idk where to. also it only goes 25km/h for refference thats 15 miles per hour. honestly it sucks but it taught me how to shift gears and how to ride a bike. i never really went to a msf course. since there is non for 50cc mopets or whatever you wanna call that thing. but i had some people tell me how to ride bikes. one of the mistakes i made on it was shifting the wrong way. how? i didnt know you had to let go of the throttle in order to shift. meanwhile there is me trying to shift whilst i am just hitting the gas. yeah not my best moment but an essential one. other thing. how i learned to hit the foot break. i dont have abs. unlike my bikes name is telling me (i got the abs model. but abs stands for antwerp bike shop) so tapping the break stops you from sliding around. basically what you're doing is mimicing abs. at a traffic light? hit the clutch whilst you're breaking. why? trust me you dont wanna stall. also something thats basically only a thing on this bike is. if you're stopping go 2nd gear to continue riding. why? because 1st (tops out at 16km/h) is pointless on this bike since 2nd (18km/h or if you're lucky 20km/h) 3rd (24 km usually) then 4th gear goes to 30km/h but dont tell the law that. they approved the thing but i guess they didnt know its faster than 25 km/h oh for the drivers intrested dvv insures it for 14.98 euros a month. well thats the price in belgium. also it has a 2 stroke engine so it takes forever before you get the gas light to show up. there is no way of telling how much gas is left. because there is no fuel gauge. it shows is if its almost out of gas by showing a light. hate that. but its fine it teaches you to check your reservoir and not trust your motorcycle. which i saw on another video on youtube of a guy who saw his indian say it had a 13mile range but in actuality it had 0 miles left and kept turning off. btw i found a bug on this bike where it glitches out and goes higher then 30km/h but it will show a neutral light. thats if you start the bike go to 2nd then 3rd then 1st. once you're in first hang the fuck on that thing will scare the fuck out of you. i saw the thing say 39 km/h but the torqueness is so much you start doing a wheelie. first time this happened i was just going out of the gasstation waiting for my moment to cross the road. dude i almost went through a restaurant. but everytime this happens i just stop and restart. because idk if its hurting the bike

after 35 years of riding, including racing motocross and supermoto I had a bike extra after a divorce, Duke 390, still have the bike a few years later. It's super fun and allows me to experiment without a lot of power and risk. It's super nimble and hard to beat on smaller roads with mostly turns. And it's cool to have bike you can ride for a 100%, not possible on high power bikes on the road. Personally I don't like the MT07 as an example when coming from the Ninja 400... The yamaha has quite bad suspension if you don't fix it. Besides that it's a fun bike with a lovely engine.

I maintain that part of the difficulty of becoming a 'good' rider on modern bikes is just how damn competent and capable they've become. When I was learning 40+ years ago, even new bikes of trusted brand and model came with inherent flaws requiring you to 'learn or die'. ANYthing used couldn't be trusted to be a good example of the particular brand/model/type without personal experience- tank slappers just 'happened'. My absolute favorite 'classic' bike has a better handling reputation now than it did in 1975, mostly because it took a long time for word to reach most ears that PLASTIC swing arm bushings were a bad idea, and it had 'em. More of our non- cager related serious accidents back then occurred because of some part/component or basic design letting you down; now, they all seem to be from younger/newer riders riding beyond their experience.

A Yamaha WR450 (2012+) is the best bike in my opinion for beginners to learn the fundamentals on. Has plenty of power and amazing suspension right out the box. Can also be tuned down to make the power more forgiving, and throw some supermoto wheels on it and it becomes a sick street bike. Everyone thinks the maintenance is horrible compared to the drz but they’re just wrong. Easily can get 15-20k before rebuilding or even adjusting the valves.

Kinda disagree with that one. The power to weight ratio is pretty damn high, as is the seat height. Most people won't even know it can be tuned down much less how to do it, and the streetbike application is very dependant on where you live, as far as I know it's not going to be road legal in quite a few places. A 250cc dual-sport or a drz is going to teach you the same skills while being easier to put a foot down and without the risk of getting in trouble over a bit too much throttle.

@@iridium771Agreed. If a bike can power wheelie in 4th, then it’s not a good starting bike. I wouldn’t even trust a beginner on a 250 if it’s setup for track use.

Holy shit, imagine a selling point being "easily" get 15-20k before having to rebuild AND then comparing it to a DRZ. The valve check interval on a wr250r is 40,000kms with 5k oil changes and I've seen a dozen around 100,000kms unopened.

So I heard start on a 250cc KTM or YZF then ride that for a weekend and go straight to kawasaki H2 Good thing about the UK, we get 50cc licence at 16, 125cc licence at 17, A2 licence at 19, and a full licence at bare minimum of 21 as long as you had your A2 for 2 years. I went through all the stages. First thing I ever rode was a 50cc suzuki quad when I was 7 years old LOL the yellow ones with the blue seat, they had a white and blue seat one as well.

Even ninja 650 could be on that list ^^ ( if you need to take a loan to buy a bike ) rather than geting ninja 400 get 650 … ( own both ) got similar power the only difference 650 is more comfortable and goes about 20 miles more in top speed + easier for motorway comuting

I don't really believe in progression the way Yam spells it out... if you want to go fast with a big bike, yes, likely best to start small and work up but there is absolutely nothing that says you HAVE to get a bigger bike... small is fun, cheap and usually better on gas and there is a reason all the old phogies return to small bikes...

I know you are not a fan of cruisers, but some of us don't want to get on a rocket bike. I'm 55 and it is not the sports bike that peaked my interest in bikes. The Cruiser did. It is the casual ride on a country road with an occasional commute on the interstate. I don't ever see myself pushing to the limits of bikes. I cant see how getting on a Grom could teach me more than a cruiser could. I mean they choose the Honda Rebel at MSF classes for a reason. Another hate of yours is the Chinese bikes like CFMoto. For my first bike, impressing anyone is not my goal. One to two years and then I'm planing to graduate to an Indian. I'm waiting for the 2025 CFMoto 450 CL-C to hit the market. It is cheap enough and has competitive specs compared to the Honda Rebel 500. Also, despite what is popular with classic instrument panel, I like that it has a TFT that is so much easier to see than that horrible LED of Honda Rebel. Not to mention that the Honda rebel don't even put a Tachometer on it. Please more content on cruisers and Please review the CFMoto 450 CL-C. There is just so little information on it even though the are on a "Demo Tour" right now.
