Thank you for highlighting issues with the breeding of brachycephalic dogs. It’s not just the puppy mills that are the problem. The AKC, UKC, EKC, and other regional dog clubs have a lot to answer for in promoting those breeds, which are so susceptible to breathing problems.

Agreed fully! It's just terrible how they even refuse to acknowledge those breeds by breeders that intentionally do their best to make them have a better quality of life. In Europe it's becoming bigger that breeders are breeding back some old traits into brachycephalic dogs, such as longer snouts and better body and neck structure. Same goes for breeds like the GSD, there are a lot who are trying to eliminate the hunched back, which is only bred for cosmetics due to the standards of the AKC, UKC, EKC, etc. All of these dog clubs refuse to acknowledge them and even go hard against condeming those breeders, because it's not the standard. They're a big part of the problem. But many breeders over here stay dedicated to giving those breeds a better quality of life. In Germany, we actually have a term for dog breeds who are breeded with terrible traits that reduce their quality of life (frenchies, etc.) and tea-cup type of dogs (Pomeranian, mini Chihuahua (their brain is too big for their skull, leading to the buldged eye looks), etc.). It's "Qualzucht" and literally translated it means "agony/torture breed". There is no term like this in English, which shocks me honestly!
@Hermititis
@Hermititis Жыл бұрын
@@Miarahdd, "torture breed" is a fantastic term for instantly communicating the issue & painting it in exactly the right light.
@Miarahdd
@Miarahdd Жыл бұрын
@@Hermititis True, it's sorta also what it means in German, as it directly refers to the terrible traits those poor breeds have to endure. If I look at the GSD as a good example, I blame the AKC, EKC, etc. for how ruined the breed is now due to the back and hip issues. Luckily, over here, quite a few breeders are intentonally breeding "back" the old traits where they were much healthier.

@@Miarahdd many purebred dogs are overbred. Which means they’re breeding and perpetuating dysfunction in the animals. Exploiting their weaknesses. That’s bad breeding 101. You mentioned the sloping of the German shepherds back. It is curious to me as to how that looks good. Is it a functional design? Probably not. They’re now prone to hip dysplasia. That’s gotta be a painful condition. Many animals are overbred. I haven’t seen a tiger that doesn’t appear man made. Or at least contrived in some manner. I myself would never get a brachycephalic dog. Trying to wash their face is difficult. They snore loudly bc of their nasal situation. But God bless ‘em tho.

Many times ppl get in terrible financial trouble, or problems w health or divorce, for instance. While it’s never acceptable to dump an animal, it’s almost to be expected in a society that shames pet owners for being poor or working class and suddenly unable to care for their pets. You know how badly rents are rising, right? What happens if the new landlord(the only one u can now afford) says no pets? And u have children to house? No, this will never be solved through hate and judgment

I used to work at a shelter. We once had a spaniel puppy named Emma who was supposed to be put down. Why? Her leg was run over by a four wheeler and her owners didn’t want a 3 legged dog. We couldn’t save her leg but after she recovered she was adopted by a nice family with kids

Seeing Jack being out of his shell in the Welsh countryside reminds me of when we took our rescue Dillon to the Welsh countryside too. He was an Irish street dog. I used to work at a shelter. We once had a cat named Aslan (because of his long orange fur) who was sent to us because of an embedded collar. It took over a month to heal fully. Even so he was the sweetest cat ever, he’d walk right up to a stranger and roll onto his back asking for belly rubs. After his neck healed he was adopted very quickly

My new husband had a little female dog who was herself about 11 or 12. Daisy would alert Bronson to bark when he needed to , like when a stranger drove up. She would also wake him up when it was time to eat! Both dogs have since passed on , I felt the wayDIsy bonded

Watching Apple reminded me of my own baby kitty. He was little over one and a half years old when my best friend found him crying for help outside her balcony window. He was abandoned by his last owner, left on the streets to fend for himself, was getting attacked by foxes, had fleas and blood in his stools. He was severely underweight and malnourished. It took a long time to get to the bottom of his diarrhea and get him in a diet that works for him. He was 4kg when he as first found and now is a healthy 6kg kitty and so happy. I can't understand why his last owners abandoned him. He is the sweetest boy and I would give up my organs for him. I love him so much. I truly hurt for animals who were abandoned. The trauma can stay with them for a long time.

We adopt only Shelter pets. The last dog my husband and I had together was a Senior Dachshund, apx 12 years old, found wandering the streets of a major city. She had several fatty tumors our Vet decided to leave, as they were more unsightly than anything else. We had her 5 years, and she passed just a few months before my husband did. Because of my age, I wanted another Senior Doxie dog as a companion once I was ready for one...But when I went to the pound, I fell in love--with a Terrier PUPPY! Funny how that works, isn't it? HOWEVER, I've made firm arrangements for his adoption by my daughter when I pass--I'm 76, and I want to make sure he has a long and happy life. Happily, my daughter babysits him often 🙂.

When you decide to take in an animal you have to be prepared to do just that. Animals are like humans, you have to take care of them. Who abandons a dog: people who run out of money, people who need a job because of sudden dismissal or long-term un employment, mental and physical health issues... The list goes on. No one adopts a pet with the intention of abandoning them. Staying alive, especially in the current economic conditions, got a lot harder a lot faster than anyone could anticipate. We need to have compassion for abandoned animals and the people who leave them. Especially if those people are shamed for having to spend money on food, electricity, and shelter that they would rather spend on their pets. People will only come forward for help if they feel safe doing so. Shame only perpetuates the cycle of suffering for animals and people. Rather than saying "Oh no! How terrible could a person be to abandon their pet!" We should say: "How can we help people and provide resources and education for those most vulnerable in our society?" Compassion is key, and it is utterly heartbreaking to have to surrender a pet.

My dogs name is Zed! He's a great Dane lab mix that I rescued from the pound at 4 months. They told me he wouldn't get bigger than a lab. He weighs about 140 pounds now.

Rescue dogs are absolutely amazing and so rewarding (cats too!) Feeling like you've gained their trust just feels so good. My family got a dog about five years ago, he is a Siberian Husky who was surrendered and only six months old. We immediately knew something about him was different compared to other dogs. He didn't bark at all, not even when the other dogs did and he didn't know how to play with dog toys. He was shy and not all that affectionate. Once we took him home and he bonded to us we discovered another issue. He had extreme separation anxiety and tore up his gums when we left him alone in his crate for the first time. Coming home to a bloody mess and mamgled crate was just horrifying and we knew we had our work cut out for us. But with some training and a lot of hard work his separation anxiety eventually improved. Now we don't have to worry about leaving him home alone.

My Yorkie is like Jack, and it breaks my heart. I was told she was 6 but found she wasn't even 4 and was being retired from breeding. I was told she was in good health with good teeth. Poor pedigreed dog had never had her teeth brushed & had to have some pulled. She had obvious ear infections & the breeder was quick to leave her. I feel my sweet girl was just used to make money from her ancestry. Callie is such a fearfully anxious darling! I am still trying to find a treat or reward she likes so I can train her. I've never been more patient with a new dog, yet frustrated to think of her beginning in life.😢 She is my shadow, which has been a blessing since becoming a young widow and empty-nester all at once. We needed each other.

Try hotdogs, cut in to little pieces. Its what was recommended by the trainer we saw to help train our little mini dachshund. Cut the hotdog in to 1/2 inch slices and then quarter each slice.

@PandaPeanut Thank you for the suggestion. The Itty bitty hot dog pieces worked well for the first day. I've found canned chicken (drained & washed thoroughly) will engage her hidden in a snuffle mat. I know that gives her mental stimulation, but it's tricky to use as rewards for basic "touch" or "watch me" or "sit". Forget recall at this point, although she won't go too far from me off-leash. I need her to want to come to me. I try to make it silly, or "chase me" but she shuts down & won't budge. I follow Victoria Stillwell's positivity training, which has worked on the many puppies I've watched over the years. I don't expect her to do agility training ( most other dogs liked it). But I want to walk with me on a leash. Not show fearful, appeasement gestures when she IS such a delightful girl. Any other suggestions? I'm open to trying. She and I have had a rough couple of years before meeting each other, so I do have compassion & patience. And she offers me the same. ❤️

@@legallyredone5561 Does she like cheese?? If she does, try using a little piece on the end of your finger. Squat or sit on the floor, hold out the finger with the bit of cheese (cheese from a can works well for this also) say your recall command (a word or a whistle) and give her Good Girl praise when she does come. Let her move away on her own, and then repeat. Dont over do it with the training. Try it a few times and then take a break. As she masters this, you can go from sitting/squatting to kneeling to standing up. I have taught all of my dogs to come to me when I use a specific whistle with cheese and hotdog bits. Learned this trick from my dad, who trained not only all our dogs and cats, plus one stubborn ferret, to come at his whistle, but us kids too. 🤣 We kids didn't get the food rewards though. A lot depends on the dog, and what motivates them. A good recall is your best friend. And per my dad, a whistle is better than a spoken word, because its distinct and can be heard easily, even if there is a lot of other noises going on.

@PandaPeanut Thanks for this suggestion, I'll give it a try! I've heard varying thoughts on whether dogs can have cheese. Since I need her to learn recall (so she comes to me instead of running into the street, for example), a little cheese is less of a concern. I just bought some string cheese today.

Hurts my heart to see an obviously neglected or even abused animal still be really happy to meet new people. I mean, it is better than being terrified of everyone, but to think that despite being mistreated or ignored, the pet probably was still happy to see their old owner, because the pet is so sweet. :’

Apple, the little Maltese mix, may not have been "given up", in the bad scenes anyway. Sometimes when an elderly person dies, their kids only have so much time to fly out & take care of everything, & I've known people who have done this... Not sure I could. Thank goodness my mom has 2 Chihuahuas! & I've vowed to take them again & again...

My dog was abandoned by the kids of the owners after they passed away. They must have seen him in the house, because they sold it, so it means they went there to check the house out, left the dog, then sold the house and left my now dog in the house. It doesn't take too much time to take the animal at least to a shelter and drop them off with someone. I can tell from my now 9 year old baby (adopted at 8 in October 2022) that it has left scars on him. He's attached to me and my mum and after my mum had to go away for a week, he was a wreck, he is now fearful that we won't come back. No separation anxiety, so he doesn't whine when we go, but it's clear he won't survive being left again. It'd break him.

Apple is such a beautiful little furbaby ❤️❤️,, if I lived closer I'd definitely adopt her like I did my last two furbabies. But unfortunately my first furbaby I had to have her put to sleep. She was an 18 yr old chimix 😢😢

I lost my old boy... His original owner left him behind after a nasty hurricane... Gave up on him at 11.... That dog gave me the best 4 years of my life. I lost everything after that hurricane.. and I was planning on giving up... But then he popped into my life neither one of us had anything or anyone... So we had each other. I would do anything to have him back. Please give an old dog a home. They ask for so little and give so much.
