This was the album that made me fall in love with Prince. I was fourteen and played this album every day. I went to the concert in Chicago at the McCormick Place, Dec of 81. My mother called Ticketron for tickets and my friends and I were in row G from the stage. We purchased tickets for the 11:00 o’clock show and we were supposed to be 18 to attend the concert but no one was checking ID. The Time opened for Prince and it was my first concert, I will never forget it, we all had a great time. Top three songs on the album for me was Controversy, Do Me Baby and Private Joy.

Can understand why the three omissions occurred, though as you hint, 'Do Me Baby' is a gem. 'Controversy' is over 7 mins! I think it's my number 1, partially due to the powerful message of unity. I love this album. I bought it when I was 14. Back in 1982 when I bought 1999. I also bought the album Dirty Mind at the same time at the record store. Controversy is a great album. My favorite songs on it are Controversy, Sexuality (I've sung it at Karaoke bars), Let's Work, Private Joy (I still say that song is about wanking off), and Jack U Off. The first time I heard that song I was in my room with my headphones on. I was shocked but yet the words to me as a 14 yr old girl was funny. The keyboard on that song almost has a kazoo like sound to it. I love to dance to that song at home. That drum beat on it is great. I had a mix tape of Prince with all of my favorite songs of his from all of the albums I had collected for 4 years. From the first album Prince all the way up to the album Purple Rain. I put every sexy, dirty song on that tape! I use to put that tape on when I was trying to get a male friend of mine to make a play for me. Well, a few months after my 18th birthday playing that tape whenever he was over finally worked. Hot damn!

I know you asked PF this question but I'll respond anyway. Lol. I was 9 when Controversy came out and 8 for Dirty Mind. Ironically I only heard Dirty Mind at all because my cousin was a Prince fan and leant my sister the album. Controversy was the only song I heard from that album until I saw the video for Sexuality later and heard him sing Do Me Baby live at the Purple Rain tour. After that I bought the album.

1. Private Joy Was always my favorite song. Very danceable and I love the music arrangement. 2. Controversy. Funky and the stand out Lord's prayer. This was the song that sparked a family debate about if Prince music was of the devil or not. 3. Let's Work. This song contains the classic bass line. And another very danceable song. 4. Do Me Baby. I actually heard Melissa's version before Princes, but was mezzmerized that he wrote it. My brothers and I were tickled at the whole sex scene at the end. Rumors have it that Prince closed off the studio when he recorded this song, surrounded by candles. It's my guess what Prince was really doing behind the curtains. 😉

O.K. so Do Me Baby isn't on your list. Live and let live, but is sure is on mine. Controversy is *THE* touchstone Prince album for me. I bought Soft And Wet on vinyl 45 when it first came out, so I'm actually one of his Day One's (at least once he got signed to Warner's.) I really did not connect with Dirty Mind until AFTER I dug into Controversy. *This* is the album that opened my eyes to how much of a genius Prince was. Its impact on me was immediate and deeply profound and I looked at all his other output through the lens of this project (even though a lot of critics count this as one of his lesser albums) Anyway *MY* top 5 is: 5. Controversy - My introduction to this masterwork 4. Private Joy 3. Do Me, Baby - When I 1st heard this, the hair on the back of my neck stood up. 2. Let's Work - This joint is on the Mt. Rushmore of basslines 1. Jack U Off - The lyrics are really sexual, but the keyboard sounds and the chord work are so freakin' *JOYFUL*

Tha song is carefully layered in New Wave rebellion, mixed wit quasi-theological context. This is my top 5: 1. Controversy. OMG, the groove is what did it! Then you get the lyrics that really is Prince saying I'm gonna keep ya guessing. I mean didn't dude do this his, entire career? But he's telling you his blueprint. I've been saying this since he passed, the blueprint is in this song, period. My grandparents were from church background, so I went to church. Never could get the hang of the Lord's Prayer. Dude drops it on a song, I can recite it with no problem! Of course it's, with Prince's music in the back of my mind. 2. Sexuality. I'm like what 13 when this came out? So hormones were raging. As an adult I got exactly what he was saying with breaking down the status quo, and being free. I dug it even more. 3. Jack U Off. Flirtatious, but to the damm point. 4. Let's Work - just downright funky. It was just let me show you how to do this, put in some work mamma! 5. Do Me Baby. It's just sexy. But I mainly love it because of his dialogue towards the end! ☺

I love all your choices here. Sexuality has iconic prince hoots to start the song (I can’t take the song seriously because of them I just laugh to quick). The only ones I’d switch would be 1 and 2, I like them both equally but the one I’d be more likely to replay the most would be Let’s Work. Controversy with the Bible verse, if you’re at a funeral or at a church service and they start saying it, you’ll think of the song and work so hard to not laugh instead of praying which is hilarious for me. The private joy could be interpreted as a sex toy or a relationship or even just as a private interest you could be ashamed of by certain people. Jack U off is a fun dancey song. Not much too it, I still like it, I just don’t have any funny stores about it.

I couldn’t believe how you didn’t include controversy on your top 10 album title list. I know you came in the prince game late with graffiti bridge but you slept on controversy.

not sleeping on it. It's a great album! But my thought is that Prince got better as he went along. I came in on Graffiti, but I would definitely not call it my favorite just because that was my first. But there are a lot of title tracks specifically that beat out Controversy, which is why it got an honorable mention. It did almost make the list though. Cheers!

Controversy is the most underrated Prince album. I’d rank it no worse than 4th after Sign, PR, and 1999. It is to Prince what Music of My Mind is to Stevie Wonder. It was the first album where he really had that sound that he would become known for but before the commercial success of the later albums. In Prince’s case it was about perfecting that funk/rock/punk sound that he was known for. The albums before were great and had those elements but it all came together in Controversy. That said here are my top 5: Let’s Work - Maybe the funkiest song of all time but sadly underplayed in clubs and on radio. Annie Christian - Punk Funk at it’s finest along with Lady Cab Driver. The guitar work is amazing. Private Joy Sexuality Controversy I hate leaving the other songs off but that’s the rules. It’s really 8 great songs on an album of 8 songs.

Not in order. ( I’am good at picking the songs, just not ranking them in order) Controversy, classic and he didn’t care what they was saying about him. Private joy, love the cheekyness of it. Let’s work, the groove, and will motivate you to get going Sexuality, not so much about sex like you would think and I like that. Do me Baby , Why wasn’t it on your list ! 😂😂😂😂 , seriously thou, Jack u Off almost made it, I seen that performance of this song at capital theater and been having a love affair with the song since.

Not really. If i did a Top List on B-Sides, I'd likely make it a Top 10. Also, there's a lot of b-sides and I bet there're some I haven't heard yet. lol. I gotta think on that one.
