thanks for the vid. I wanted to use inav on a 7" chimera7 for many of the reasons you mention: position hold, RTH. It'd be nice to be able to take a break in midair during 20min long flights. Do you think the flight performance is as good as Betaflight on the 7" class of drones though? This would be for cinematic flying/mountain surfing.
@WhirlyBloke2 жыл бұрын
As I said in the video, for this type of drone INAV is far superior for all the reasons I give. And it flies better.
@iceboundflame2 жыл бұрын
@@WhirlyBloke excellent! I see now your video also recommends inav with e.g. the AOS 7, in addition to the larger cinelifters you show in the beginning. Inav just makes so much more sense than Betaflight. I lost a long range quad due to Betaflight's inadequate RTH, totally avoidable with better software.
@100SteveB2 жыл бұрын
Got to say I totally agree with you about how smooth a flight you can get with iNav. Of course you can get that with Ardupilot, but getting all the various filter and pids set up correctly on Ardupilot can be a bit of a mission. I have been using ardupilot for a few years now on some fairly big quads and hex's, and it's always taken a lot of messing about to get it just how you want it. Out of interest last year a built a quad using iNav, wanted to see what it was like. I could not believe just how smooth the quad flew straight from the start, without messing with pids and filters at all. Out of the box so to speak, iNav gave me a machine that was flying much nicer than my Ardupilot based machines. Just felt so smooth, not sloppy, but just smooth. I also noticed that iNav was so good at maintaining a smooth hover just a foot or so off the ground, I could never achieve that with my Ardupilot craft. No doubt Ardupilot is capable of doing the same, but getting the set up right is not easy. So I can only say your comments are spot on!

INAV has come a long way in the last couple of years. I'd say that most of the time, if you have a well build quad, it will fly really well on the defaults. Thanks for the feedback.

I just built a 8in naked BMPCC4K quad and think it is time to give inav a try. I fly HDzero and it sounds like inav is up to the task. Thanks for your great overview. Is there an easy way to migrate my tuned betaflight quad to inav?

So with inav can I still fly regular acro and regular self level mode?
@WhirlyBloke Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. It's the perfect combo. And acro on a 7 inch with INAV on defaults performs much better than acro on Betaflight.

Help, I can't get my motors spinning in inav. It's an x8 configuration. I've enabled motors and servo outputs. Switched between different ESC protocols. I'm using the kakute H7 FC and Holybro 4-in-1 ESCs. It works in Betaflight but won't work in iNav. I need help.

Try changing the motor output to multishot. Some flight controllers have a clash of DMA resources required for DSHOT. I covered that here kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmq6fnxvebmLl7c

Curious what inav 5 adds.. it was just released. I see some BNF 8 rotor setups for about $1600 to $2500. Can you build one of these for a lot less? The FC seems to be the same price (about $130), the frame kit which I thought included motors is like $350 but maybe its just the carbon fiber frame? Not sure how much gps and barometer cost, the VTX is the same as any FPV (about $150.. HDZero or DJI). It seems like you could build one for a lot less than the prebuilt ones? Would love to see a full kit list for an 8 rotor 8" like what you have, links to parts, etc.

I'm pretty sure Ardupilot provides a decent acro mode.
@WhirlyBloke2 жыл бұрын
You're right, it does. What I should have said is usable acro. I've tried the acro on ArduPilot and it works, but it's performance feels a few years behind what BF and INAV offer. And the tuning tools and filters are much less sophisticated. That doesn't mean you can't use it and it won't improve. My point is INAV is probably the best choice for larger multicopters in 2022.

I don’t know anyone who has success with inav especially RTH even when set up right it still drops and doesn’t return to home position. I for one don’t trust it. Friends have spent hours and can’t get it to perform RTH so don’t know what the problem is.
@WhirlyBloke2 жыл бұрын
There are zero issues if you choose the correct GPS and magnetometer, correctly mount and calibrate them. Most times, problems are due to mounting the GPS/Magnetometer too close to the motors, power wires or HD cameras. That's why a high rise mount is so important - it may not look pretty, but it works. Check my video that shows how and a full demo. bit.ly/37UWlk2
