I can second the number 4 the audio technica at-lp120xusb (which is it's full name) as a good turntable for everyone, it works fantastic, can do all the speeds, has a light for showing where the songs begin, has a pre-amp build in so you won't need an amplifier (you can still use one if you want), can upgrade the cardridge if you like or replace it if it breaks, can connect to a computer to digitise your vinyl (combine it with vinyl studio pro and you can record your records to digital with ease), it is direct drive so no worries about a belt that might break and you are in complete control so it won't stop playing halfway the last song because it thinks it's done (which happens on some records with automatic players)

I bought the RT-85 earlier this year. It is definitely worthy of being number one on the list. The sound quality is amazing. The only thing I don't like about it is the plastic lifting arm, it seems a bit flimsy and has some play in it. I've mentioned this to Fluance & they say this is normal. Other than that, everything else is perfect.

Well I just spent a reasonable amount on a brand new vinyl setup just a few months ago. I went with the Audio Technica LP-140XP, which comes standard with an AT XP3 cartridge. Straight off the bat, I upgraded the cartridge to an AT VM540ML RigB, which is a MicroLine cartridge, as the XP3 tracks very heavily at 3-4g. Mine is specially fitted a metal housing, compared to the plastic mould housing that comes with the standard 540ML. This makes for better stereo separation, better micro dynamic detail, and overall better clarity. I paired this all up with a Pro-Ject Phono Box S2, as the LP-140XP does not come with a built in phono stage. Overall I’m very happy with my set up. It sounds amazing, and my 540ML has the ability to make old overplayed records sound like new again! Btw, I have a suggestion for song of the day, which is Self Esteem by The Offspring. Yes indeed.... I realise that the content is very basic, very beginner oriented, I've no problem with that. And I get why turntables with built-in phono stage, cartridge, even Bluetooth, but sound quality above convenience will give better results sonically and allow upgrades, etc. Rega must be available in the USA and Canada surely? There's a Project turntable at least, but Rega across their range offer something for everyone at various price points and their track record and reputation over decades is outstanding. But sound quality is key. Plus if you sell or trade-in a Rega you'll get a return, not sure some of the cheaper decks on this list.

This spring I upgraded from an AT-LP120USB (it was glitching out -- because the RCA is hard-wired in; thankfully I was able to do some soldering and re-sold it) to a AT-LP1240USBX. Love that sucker! Comes with a slightly better stylus and has a few more controls on it. Only thing I don't like about it is the dust cover isn't hinged, so you can't just flip it up -- you have to remove it. What I find interesting is that turntables that do 16rpm are just nowhere to be found. FWIW, I don't have any records that play back at 16rpm, but if I did, I suppose I could just digitally record 'em at 33 and then halve the speed on the recording.

I've just got some used Technics 1210s from my cousin who has approx 2 sets, plus cdjs and the new MK7s. Apart from some minor wear on the casing they're in very good nick. Came with Ortofon Concorde Diamonds too. No complaints at all. These plus the used KRK Rokit 5" with stands, and a pioneer djm 600, and a unit to house my vinyl and sit my equipment on its run me about £1500 which I don't think is bad at all

I'll be getting the RT85 soon. It's available with a Nagaoka MP-110 stylus (same price) and from what I've researched, the difference between the MP-110 and the Ortofon Blue isn't the sound quality but the warmth/brightness. Any experience or thoughts with this?

I think it’s time to update your list of turntables. TheFluance RT81 is garbage. I followed your recommendation and ended up tossing it in the trash in favor of a Technics 1500C. The Fluance Overall it's an okay turntable, but that's probably as far as I would go with it. The visual aesthetic proves more impressive than actually using it. The entire tonearm mechanism feels super cheap. The tonearm lever, stand and safety latch actually feels like something you'd find on a cheapo plastic portable record player like a Crosley. Maybe I got a bad one, but that's my honest opinion. There's a lot of slack in the lever, it bounces the arm if you lift it too quickly and the tonearm safety latch feels like its going to break off every time I use it. The counter weight is to dark to see the numbers to set the tonearm. when I called customer service they were no help at all. They referred me to a video that did not help at all. Customer service has no technical skills when it comes to Fluance products and that’s a fact. The tonearm is cheap plastic garbage. The lock for the tonearm leaves a mark that’s how cheap it is. When purchasing a turntable at this price point something has to give and in this case it’s the tone arm.

I had an LP60x and hated it; It ran too slow (by about 1.4%). There was no way to adjust the speed. Its probably down to what one you get, if you win the speed lottery its probably fine. I have a LP120XUSB and love it, other that the preamp (a tad noisy) its perfect for me.

Love the LP60. Started with it and now it is a 2nd turntable for my office. Pro tip: Don't use an automatic turntable with records that are odd shapes. I own one that is pumpkin-shaped. You are likely to destroy your stylus when it drops the needle and it goes bouncing off the platter.
