I got to see Howard Hughes' H-4 when it was in Long Beach California and it was a pretty memorable visit. We weren't allowed inside, but the stairs leading up to cockpit allowed us to see inside the cargo hold and it was enormous. I think the most memorable thing for me was standing next to the massive Pratt & Whitney R4360. The 3000 hp giant "corn cob" engine really gave you perspective as to the true size of the plane. The Spruce Goose never did actually have a flight test although I am very certain that it would have been very capable aircraft if it had, but Hughes, as quirky as he was, did not plan to lift the "Goose" off of the water that one fateful time... He also never got above ground effect and set H4 back down on the water after about a mile, never flying it again!

I knew the prototype Me 262's were fitted with a prop engine initially for testing, as the jet ones weren't quite ready due to a design error or something. However I have never seen it fitted with both, - in that picture it looks like it has a tri-cycle undercarriage, yet weren't the first ones all 'tail draggers', - even the first jet ones.?
@MrMarinus186 жыл бұрын
I think the things on the wings aren't real engines. For the testing to be valid I think they added dummy engines as they will create a lot of drag and affect the plane's balance.
@christopherlovelock91046 жыл бұрын
Hm. I see your point, however how does that explain away the 'tri-cycle' undercarriage as all the early prototypes were 'tail draggers', and it was only on the production models the later undercarriage with the nose wheel came into use.

For clarification if you have ever listened to a V-1 in flight, it sounds like a Big Bee but when the V-1 reached it's target it would nose down inducing negative G and starving the Pulse jet of fuel, which is why it goes silent just before it hits it's target.

Okay, I got four out of five this time. I did not know about cable cutting aircraft, they were new to me. It did remind me of an incident with a British Wellington bomber which was flying along the southern bank of the River Humber during WW2 when it got snagged on a barrage balloon cable. The cable started to cut through the wing but was stopped by a rather substantial metal beam which held the wings onto the body of the aircraft. The beam was strong enough to cut the cable and the Wellington was able to land. I think we can guess at the feelings of those on board, though one of them may have felt some pride in the design of the aircraft. Especially as he was its designer, Barnes Wallis.

Also in terms of resources the strategic bombing campaigns of the allies took about as many resources from the allies as it did for the Germans. In 1942 and 43 when Germany still had some anti-air defenses it actually cost the allies more than it did the Germans. For the allies after the US joined this wasn't an issue as they had a practically infinite amount of resources. So even if the ratio is 3 to 1 it is still effective for them to do so. The allies were mostly hoping it would break German moral but it never did that so the decision was made to invade Europe instead. Strategic bombings would continue to disrupt German industry though by that point there was no real air defenses anymore. There were also moral questions about it especially from the British, this came to a head with the bombing of Dresden after which carpet bombing was called off. Germany couldn't just have a 1 to one 1 attrition ratio.

The me163 wasn't able to fly under its own power, but the me- rc 163 (not sure where rc is in title) could take off and fly on it's own, but only 5 minutes of fuel were able to be carried, and it was a VERY unstable peroxide based rocket fuel. But the pilots often would get to 20-25k above bombers very quickly and cut off engine and glide thru bomber formations at an extremely high rate of speed, and climb back up using more fuel, and repeat until fuel was expired. Also had a trolley carriage-type landing gear that was discarded after take-off, and a sled-type landing pad was extended upon landing. Not many were ever used, there were a few. I've flown them in simulators...also the me 323 and 323 zwillings were the largest land-based craft. Until spruce goose. And just for weirdness, look up me 109z zwilling unarmed prototype.. Double fuselage 109s...crazy.the ENORMOUS HE-111 zwilling (Also known as ME-323-Z) was the same setup AS 109-Z,...a double fuselage on a already massive aircraft.

Ju 290 is defently a heavy bomber/transport. Both the B17 and B24 have a max takeoff weight of about 30tons. For the Ju 290 it was about 45 tons. JU 290 is actually in between the B24 and the much larger B29. Ju 390 was actually quite a bit larger than the B29 with 75 tons of take of weight. Its worth noting that germans build quite a number (about 280) of FW200 to that was sligtly lighter than the B17, but also quite a bit faser with similar engine preformance. While it was mostly used as a naval bomber, because that was what the germans needed, it would easialy be adapted to a strategic bomber. Its worth noting that FW 200 had longer range than both the B24 and B17. Its worth noting FW 200 started production in 1937. Pretty simple light aircraft is a aircraft with one engine (some exception two). Medium aircraft is the one with 2 or 3 engines. And the heavy once are the one with 4 or 6 engines. That is usually the same engines .... where the fighters usually have a bit more tuned engines. I would say its totaly false that Luftwaffe was not set up to build heavy aircrafts. I would say even the opposite is true. Prior to the war they had the most experience with heavy aircrafts. The diffract was not in production but rather strategy

" Spruce Goose" was not the actual name of the AMERICAN super plane... its name was the HERCULES. The name spruce goose was coined as a negative connotation against the planes designer HOWARD HUES. Chexk out the story sometime its fairly amazing. As for her flight. She only flew one time for about a quarter mile before being landed to prove she could be airborne to the congress of the uniter states whom had been attemping to call into question the owner HOWARD HUES's wartime plane building and tax payer funded endeavors legitimacy . As always love the channel and excellent content! Just thought in would let you know take it easy keep i0 the hard work it's amazing quality!

Indeed. I think part of the reason Spruce Goose is more closely associated with it is because it helps avoid confusion with the C-130 which was made 9 years later. The C-130 was tremendously successful and so everyone associates the name Hercules with that plane instead.

*BIZZZT* wrong! In July 1944 an me262 jet *did not* shoot down a Mosquito. The 262 chased the unarmed reconnaissance Mosquito, which took evasive action. A front fuselage plate popped off the Mosquito, not due to the 262s armaments. The Mosquito went on, landing in Italy. The first air to air jet kill was a British Meteor shooting down a V1 jet rocket days later.
