@@TheChieftainsHatch Check out the French battleship Charles Martel, USS Texas (1892), French battleship Henri IV, Japanese battleship Satsuma, SMS Schleswig-Holstein, and the HMS Agamemnon (1906). The pre-dreadnoughts are the inter-war tanks of the sea, lots of ideas but then later designs got serious.

I've heard a story that one CVT in the Falklands ran someone over, the crew realised with horror as it happened and got out, only to have some irate squaddie with a now ruined backpack pull himself out of a now Wile E. Coyote style mans shaped hole in the ground and give them some rather 'blue' language. It's one of those stories no one is sure is true, but heard it from a veteran that knew someone who knew someone who saw it ;)

That ".50 cal" at the front of the Buffalo is a 20 mm Polsten gun (quite similar to an Oerlikon 20 mm).

I think Drac knows what a 20 mm cannon is. His dialogue was referring to pacific operations where the US did not mount 20 mm cannons on their LVPT’s.

Well, Drach was in a British Museum, highlighting the features of a British operated (and modified) variant. Granted, the U.S. versions did not mount the 20mm weapon BUT if you re-run the video, you will notice that the weapon has a "snail drum" magazine. No Browning M2 ever had a magazine in that shape. There WERE two .50 M2s though, just forward of the ramp. @@scipioafricanus4328

@@scipioafricanus4328 the LVTP's were later cold war amphibs that did mount a 20mm gun or a combo .50 M-2and 40mm M19 AGL there were also cold war LVTP's that mounted 105mm howitzers WW2 LVT's also mounted 37mm guns (both AT guns and automatic guns) and 4.5" rockets

It has been pointed out that due to the early involvement of the navy in tank design, a lot of terminology was adopted for the new machines. So they were equipped with Hulls, hatches, turrets, sponsons. Taking the naval design factor to its extreme, you could have included some of the multi-turreted leviathan's that were built in the 1930s.

@@Drachinifel There is another, less obvious connection you missed, which is the naval infantry T-55 variant of the tank (which I doubt you can find outside of russian museums these days). The soviet Naval infantry in the early 80s essentially took a look at the shiny new T-72s that the army was fielding and realised "This thing is too big and too heavy to fit on our landing craft" and as landing craft tend to have a limited capacity due to well... Having significant size and draft restrictions, they essentially asked their old, smaller T-55s to get the "Drozd" active protection system fitted on them, active protection systems are essentially just airburst munitions designed to take out incoming rounds or rockets, in case you dont know much about that... So essentially for a while there, the only tanks in the world to have this cutting edge tank technology (which only started seeing adoption outside of the USSR in the last 10 years or so) under the command of the soviet Navy instead of the Army

@@gregorywright4918 You're thinking about Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA). Active Protection Systems act ahead of the impact, destroying the projectile before it reaches the tank.

For those that don't know... The Royal Naval Air Service operated land based for most of WW1, at the very start of the war they had in effect "snatch squads" with cars to rescue downed pilots, while the front was fluid this worked well, but some blokes in field grey didn't like this and kept shooting at them. So the RNAS started to put armour on their snatch cars, then machine guns, then you get stuff like the Seabrook lorry mounting a 3pdr gun. With all that knowledge built up through design and use, the navy remained involved in armour car operations for the rest of the war.

Very well done! My #1 Naval tank, for WWII, is the M4 Sherman, as all of them had to take a boat ride to get to battle. Quay side cranes limited the size of the tanks which were delivered, same as landing craft. Had to have the Navy involved. Same went for Desert Storm

All tanks were transported by ship, Churchills (40t) to USSR and North Africa and later to Australia and Korea. Tiger 1s (50t) to North Africa. Liberty Ships were designed to be able to self load/unload. They had a 50t Boom Derrick for their No. 2 Hold which was where 14 Medium tanks were loaded, some were built especially for tank transport with four holds with 50t Derricks. During the war some 2000 90t steam locomotives were exported worldwide, dockyard cranes rated at 100t. General cargo cranes in UK were mostly rated at 35t (Pitt and Stothert) but in the Wartime Emergency they could lift 50t by limiting jib extension and running cable life. Landing Ship Tank LCT were built with a 60t Ramp. They also carried 14-16 tanks depending on type. The limitations on Tank weight was determined by Bridge Class which at the beginning of the war was around 20t The British, with the expectation of the Churchill developed Bailey Bridge and the 30ft Small Girder Bridge that 40t Churchill Bridgelayer could use. The Churchill on a Tank Transporter need a Class 70 Bridge. Bailey was adopted by the US. The limitation on width was mainly for Loading Gauge on Railways. The British found that the tall Lee/Grant tanks made the Scammel Transporter/Recovery Trailers unstable cross country and had poor height clearance ( they were uprated to carry 40t Churchill) This was the reason they ordered the Diamond T tractor with a lowloader trailer which was also adopted by the US as the M19, the only Diesel truck the US used.m

I agree, I so thought the Sherman would have been on the list. It was designed to be shipped anywhere in the world and it was. The Chieftain commented a few times the most important part of the Sherman were the large tow loops on the Sherman so cranes could easily move them from ship to shore and vice versa. It was even a "boat" itself on D-Day where several waded ashore (or sank) and fought the Germans. So it did the same thing as the Scorpion as mentioned in the video above, as it could be floated into combat, but did it many years earlier.

Thanks. I appreciated the tour of the WW2 era LVT-4 Buffalo. I served at Camp Pendleton in the early 1980s, at which time there was still a splendid outdoor display of at least a dozen WW2 era Amphibious Tractors. We were still scavenging useful cables and lighting modules from a dozen or more Vietnam-era LVTP-5's which were parked at the Las Pulgas fire station before being towed out to the range to serve as targets. I later had the dubious distinction of serving in an LVTC-7 during the Gulf War.

Funny additional naval connection with the T-55 is that Finnish Defense Force Coastal Artillery branch used turrets from T-55 tanks as Light Coastal Artillery Guns until 2012, so while not mounted on ships those were meant to be used against ships.

Britain is absolutely resolute in being the historiographers of our day. Drach a legend already. I visited the museums in the UK. All of you watching this should seriously consider visiting. There is a camaraderie that is shared by veterans of our countries. The entire Commonwealth. We all speak the same language and fundamentally, I think you'll feel strongly seeing these machines. We feel the same way today. Our basic beliefs are more similar than the machines we operate on the battlefield today. In remembrance of all the good people lost nearly 100 years ago. There was an LVT in service with the Queensland government until the late 90s. It was used to maintain powerlines running from through the daintree north to Cooktown during the wet season.

Minor correction: the LVT Buffalo displayed at the Bovington Tank Musuem does have a pair of Browning .50 caliber machineguns mounted on the sides, but the gun on the front is a 20mm Polsten automatic cannon as fitted during the crossing of the Rhine River in February 1945. Second, the rear ramp had become standard on all NATO armored personnel carriers for the reasons that you mentioned. It seems that only the Russians still debark infantry over the tops of their APCs. Consider all the infantry casualties and shortages of infantry suffered during the current war in Ukraine.

When I saw the T-55 I thought he was going to make a link between the Soviet (and earlier the German) interest in snorkelling with the Schnorkels used on U-Boats.

The Buffalo has another surprising connection. The .50bmg was created as an anti everything gun, and is famous for its ww2 performance, however these weapons were all but phased out before ww2. Only being retained for use on patrol boats. If it weren't for that use the US would have to use .30s on all if it's fighter planes and tanks.

Interesting, I was expecting the T-55 to be because of its naval infantry connection. Naval guns aren't an infrequent source of tank guns, you've got things like the M10's 3 inch gun with that lineage.

Drach is one of the most pleasant presenters I've ever seen or heard. And that's not even considering how stellar his actual research and subject matter are. I'm not gonna name names, but I clicked on a video the other day that was about the F-35 jet. The information in the video was interesting and engaging. The content itself was my sole reason for watching more then 10 seconds, because the guy doing the presentation had one of the absolute worst, unbearable voices I've ever heard. The only way to describe it would be more familiar to the old O&A crowd. It was like if you took late or even modern Opie, but crossed his voice with Bobo's way of sorta shouting everything. The guys baseline was all vocal fry but with high projection, like a blown out speaker with way too much pre-amp. It was remarkably terrible, and by contrast makes me immeasurably appreciate people like Drach and Matt Easton, who are always so pleasant and mindful that you could effortlessly listen to them for hours on end and never tire. Some people really "need" things that can help them pass the time, and give them something to think about and get immersed in. Something to distract them from their own circumstances and keep their mind away from negativity or sorrow. Drach and Matt are so perfect at providing such distractions and immersions, and thus are so helpful to those who need them. There's likely far more than a mere few who's daily lives are made more bearable because of people like them. It's something I think about every time I click on one of their video's. If you ever happen to see this Drach or Matt, sincerely, thank you. ^_^
