All of the "Top Five Tanks" chats have been great. But Jim Dowdall's is simply the best. I appreciate the perspective of the other guest Tank Chatters: Lindy Beige and Indy Neidell did great presentations that reflect their own unique view on military history and engineering. And I'm quite sure other historians and engineers, military experts and statisticians can give their own views on which armored fighting vehicles were most significant and/or effective. Describing Jim Dowdall as merely a "stuntman" is almost absurdly modest. This is a man who doesn't just drive a massive, dangerous, unpredictable, and unwieldy military monster. He's the guy who knows how to make it work in the way that film makers need to entertain us onscreen. He's been an integral part of so many of the movies that brought armored fighting vehicles to life, for the past half century: Where Eagles Dare; The Eagle Has Landed; GoldenEye , Fury. Jim is obviously the consummate professional. A man who loves his work, and has the skill and dedication to make magic happen. The perfect complement to the professionals of the Tank Museum, and the incredibly valuable and fascinating collection they maintain. Thanks for your work, Jim, on so many great movies. And thanks to the Tank Museum for having the vision to let people like Jim Dowdall share their experiences with the rest of us.

That Czech tank that the Germans got when they took over Czechoslovakia. A sufficiently good tank built in numbers. 4. The British Matilda II. Had good armor. Built in numbers. 5. ???

What a superb presenter! I love your enthusiasm and I share your delight in the vehicles you have talked of. With a background of Vintage and what are now referred to as classic vehicles I joined REME in the early 70's and had huge fun yes fun working on the strange mix of obsolecent armour that still existed in BAOR at that time. The delight was that very little support was available for spares and we had to use our initiative to invent means of keeping it all going. Oh I wish that on demob I had found my way into film instead of North sea oil which was only ever entertaining when bits fell off in bad weather!

@jqbogus7 жыл бұрын
I've heard they are mainly for traction assistance also. But maybe they'd double as "armor" in that they might cause a shape charge to detonate at a less than ideal distance as well?
@JimFortune7 жыл бұрын
Maliboost WWI British tanks were built so that the unditching beams could run the whole length of the track, then up over the top and around again. I thin the logs were like sandbags I've seen piled on Shermans. They might not help much, but they might give that tiny bit of difference that kept the crew alive.
