As a kid living in the coastal region of Peru, I remember a large lizard (probably some kind of teiid) that lived in the dry scrubland. The colors were nondescript except for bright blue on the neck. We just called them iguanas which they weren't, but a common word that did describe their size.

It's funny because I was wondering exactly that when Clint commented on wondering why it was called an iguana. I was thinking that maybe it was a South American or local term for lizards in kind of the same way that in English (or at least in American English) we often refer to insects and other small arthropods as "bugs" even though it's not taxonomically correct. I actually owned a Dwarf Tegu when i was a kid (15), in my 40s now. I've owned several different types of lizards over the years, own a blue tegu, blue tongue skink (indo variety) and a crested gecko now but nothing has had the personality or temperament of the dwarf tegu. Which is crazy because it was a wild caught and still acted the way it did. He liked to be petted and liked attention, he'd arch his back up into the touch and if i moved my hand away he'd run over to it until I was touching him to be petted. if i put my hand in the tank palm up he'd climb onto my hand and wait for me to lift him out. if you look up dwarf tegu here on youtube there is 1 video of someone that had one as a pet and seemed to act the same way. went and found the video kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYO2hIKpeauib9E
