"STORY! STORY IS EVERYTHING" My character doesn't even have a name yet-
@theepheonix17004 жыл бұрын
I relate to this on a deeper level than I care to admit
@BologneyT4 жыл бұрын
They probably have a name now, and maybe you were just joking, but a character might actually need a story more than they need a name. * shrugs * I'm sure you've seen amazing art of characters where you didn't know what their names were and didn't care because they were so inspirational. Then you probably also saw a picture an overexcited kid showed you of their OC that was in no way original OR appealing, BUT THEY HAD A NAME, and you were like. "okay what's their name? GOOD. Now I know what the first name I forget today will be!" because you didn't care.
@alguienmisterioso95974 жыл бұрын
Bro in my case I literally have backstories for all my ocs but I don't know how to name or design them :( like they all look so simple and idk how to fix that without making them overloaded yk
@BologneyT4 жыл бұрын
+Alguien Misterioso Well don't forget that simple doesn't mean bad! A character that personifies a simple idea super clearly is a really good idea! Then, if they seem clichéd add in the idea(s) that separates them from the cliché. IRL we try to look at people and tell what their story is, and although we're usually wrong, for a character, well, if you've got their backstory all figured out, you want to show as much of that backstory as you can in their design. And you can even if you can't show what they are, you can still at least show what they ARE NOT, so at least we get something about them by looking. What kinds of clothes do people with their backstory in their location wear? Styles of clothes and hair, and presence of wear. And also, don't forget personality! Also, for better or for worse, people see certain traits and... well... think certain things... so you may want to play around with ideas in peoples' heads. If you have a lot of OCs, then several of them probably represent ideas, and if they don't they probably should, and if your characters have core ideas they are about, then that can tell you a lot about what kinds of shapes or symbols to use. And don't forget learning a little realism if you haven't already, because real life provides real good inspiration and instruction for fantasy and reality! One thing I recently learned about designing characters when you don't know how they should look is to start with a general idea, draw a superfast crappy drawing of them, decide if I went the right direction with that or not, then draw them again in a different way. And most of the time I'll decide I want to focus on one part of them also to figure out what to do with that part. I think pros usually do lots and lots of concepts before they ever settle on what a character should look like even at the beginning, and the key to doing all that is that all the concepts are really rushed drawings because you're just kinda drawing the CONCEPT, to see if you like where the idea is going, and then when you get a couple you like you go explore those deeper, and then after that that's when you start slowing down and making less crappy sketches. XD Could you give me some examples of the kinds of OCs you have that you're having trouble designing? I'm not that good but design is what I'm learning now and it sounds like it might be fun to try to help you get starter ideas for some of them! :) Since I'm not that good I'm sure whatever idea you get after will be way better than mine too so why not? :D
@alguienmisterioso95974 жыл бұрын
@@BologneyT Well first of all thank you sm for helping it means a lot :"D also english isn't my native language so sorry if I talk weird or something. Umm im going to try to resume everything lol so the "plot" is about travelling in time in general, and there's this person that controls like the "time machine". Ok so the thing is that in the future, the Earth would be fucked up beacuse of world war 3 and pollution and all that stuff and is going to extint, and then there would be like an army (who are the bad guys) leaded by a man (this is one of the characters that idk how to design or name xd), and this man discovers that they can travel in time with that time machine, so his plan is to invade other past eras so they can survive, but that would destroy the history of the Earth and it would be a chaos, so that person who controls the time needs some help but has to trust just a few people that could actually help her. Ok so the main characters are people that did something wrong or want to change something from the past in general for personal reasons, so that girl who controls the time (I can't think of a name that fits her lmao but she does have a design) offers them the possibility of travel in time in exchange of helping her. Well she basically blackmails them (is that the correct word?). And the characters that idk how to name or design are some the ones that she offers the time travelling but I'm not sure if you want to know all their back stories and the things they want to change and all that stuff so I will shut up now by the moment 😔✌also u don't need to reply if you dont want to I would be lazy at replying this too lmao

I think maybe instead of "Become your character" it should be "Be passionate about your character". I feel that if people tie their sense of self too closely to their characters it makes it harder for them to notice any flaws or receive criticism. If you *are* your character any critiques your character receives feel like attacks against you as a person.
@mimipeahes58484 жыл бұрын
Okuyasu Higashikata I understand those things yes, I just feel like “become your character” is advice that can easily be misinterpreted by beginners who this video is aimed at.
@BologneyT4 жыл бұрын
Becoming your character is different from being passionate about them, though. Passion and understanding aren't the same thing. Trying to walk in someone else's shoes is a great way to get understanding and learn empathy for IRL people. You make a good point, though. People who can't take criticism, though, need to either learn to take it or simply stop inviting it.
@luna-xn4gr4 жыл бұрын
i'm pretty sure you should become the character. i love acting out my character, thinking from time to time "i wonder what my character would do if this happened to them?" i write down those notes and revisit them a day later with a fresh eye and mind. This helps me have a deep understanding of them as well as an objective view. plus, you will need to take criticism for both your art and you if you want to improve anyhow.

It's weird I have 3 main ocs and I'm extremely attached to one of them and they genuinely feel like a real person that I'm friends with, and I love my other characters so hopefully over time it'll be the same with them
@WyrdFayth Жыл бұрын
Then you have creators like me. I recently copied my own character's haircut (despite him being very masculine and me not being a guy) literally just because (a) it seemed manageable, and (b) he's my favorite OC at the moment and it sounded kind of fun to get an idea how it feels to have that hairstyle to get even more into his head. At the same time, I am so afraid that when I finally start making content to share of the story he's part of, people will not criticize him _enough_ lmao. I adore him but he is deeply flawed and needs to be called out on his shit sometimes. My opposite fear is that some people will see him as irredeemable, but I deeply hope I can manage to convey that he is not and will never be a particularly Good Person but is still capable of learning to treat other people decently regardless. 😌

EVERYONE is adding freckles to their characters, now. For a change sure, but they're overrated, imo. Like those people who put fake freckles, on themselves. With scarring, it depends on the setting. If there's some form of healing magic, or abnormal regeneration, that ends up not leaving scars behind, then yeah (idk much about this artist's story, but it looks fantasy based). Agree with the similarity though, the redhead's hairstyle reminds me of the queen's, ngl

6:32 Don't worry I'm doing this too... And not only in the shower... Even if me and my cousin are old for those things we still play with each other! I mean we don't play with kings and queens! We prefer playing with our OCs! it's fun to be honest! Sometimes I feel like we're actor and actress playing our roles! And sorry for my grammar... Edit:Oh my god, OH MY GOD! THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR 80+ LIKES! THIS IS THE MOST LIKES I'VE EVER GOTTEN IN MY LIFE!!! Sorry for my grammar again!

Become your character, that's definitely a tip I find myself doing sorta unconsciously, like when I'm watching a series or an anime I sometimes start thinking in my mind. "How/what would said character do in this scenario or encounter? How would they handle it? I guess in a way I'm mentally role playing...I also have a habit of making my characters in RPGs so that helps as well!

As much as I love Ross and his art, I’d very much appreciate if he acknowledged in his female design that there is more than one body type. 💓
@e.vcabeza77104 жыл бұрын
I think that he just really likes that body type. I always try to draw different body types and (sadly) end up with the one I like the most. That's probably a BIG problem with all artists hahaha
@AA-pv6mi4 жыл бұрын
Shut up. He can draw what he wants.
@AA-pv6mi4 жыл бұрын
Tsundere arts Nobody has to do anything. Who even are you to start telling people what to do? You’re the type of entitled shit to bash Sakimichan.earning different body types that you won’t add into your art is not a fundamental. It’s not mandatory.
@gigigweel4 жыл бұрын
@@AA-pv6mi ok lol calm down (I am not meaning to sound rude you just sound a bit worked up) and as an artist myself (not as good as him but still a artist) I understand if he won't because he just doesn't want to post art he is self conscious in and maybe in his perspective it isn't good enough or he just likes drawing that body type better, and it is ok but it's just generally more useful to have the knowledge and to be able to do more things it generally helps your art over all. As a person with a different body type then the ones he usually draws I would really appreciate it if he could also include different body types just so people that watch his videos can maybe feel a bit more included. Also we aren't like ordering him to do it or anything we are just saying we would appreciate it if he does it
@gigigweel4 жыл бұрын
@@AA-pv6mi also usually it kind of is mandatory to learn different body types it just helps I'm general but if he won't do it it's fine it's his choice and she never said he HAD to she said "you can ignore it and not apply it"

Watching this I thought this was a bad advice video because most of the provided content doesn't match with the tips. Like, I get the attempt to simplify, but it was so simple I wasn't understanding the connection between his examples and the tips. Not to mention him repeating himself like he's just filling space. Until you got to step five. Holy heck this one connects perfectly. Down to where I too also play with my characters in the shower, defining mannerisms and actions. Become your character is definitely a tip I fully support and endorse for any kind of character design.
